Love this photo. Shows everything football was before we were told we had to be seated.
Rock up on the day, pay your money, pick your spot, stand with your mates.
Was it better than now in all seater stadiums? I think it was.

What a great photo. Around 72/3? In retrospect it was much more enjoyable then despite (or because of?) the spartan facilities. That said I am sure that in fifty years’ time today’s youngsters will say the same about football in the 2020s! Also if we really could time travel back to the good old days we would probably be horrified!

Agreed. But of course for me it's a bit nostalgic because that was the time I was going to matches.
Then I look at the pitch and the crumbling terracing, every other person smoking..... Good days though.

Aye, looking back at the past through rose-tinted glasses. I was a kid in the 1980s, and I think it looks a grim place to be when I see documentaries from that time, especially the early part of the decade.

Some of today's society would be horrified with purchasing a Pie near the Bee Hole End Toilets, let alone when you then ventured into them for a slosh around

The stand on the right was called (I think) the Ford stand as Ford Motors sponsored a fair play award & Oldham won it in perhaps the only season it was offered.The award payed for it.The stand opposite it (partly obscured) was the main stand,a lovely old Victorian type.I was born in the hospital nearby,called Boundary Park just like Oldham’s ground & although I went to the odd game I never became a regular supporter but I remember vaguely a Boxing Day victory over Southport of 13 - 0 in perhaps 1963
Regular suppprting a football team had to wait till 1967 when I moved to Bacup & my father in law persuaded me to go over the hill to watch Burnley…I became hooked & still go today, although i missed the first three games & have yet to get the measure to this new team!

I think football grounds ghen were just proper working class meeting places, they reflected society of the time. Great how you could move for a better view or if you saw a mate you could move over.
The Bee Hole bogs should have bee listed, dismantled brick by brick as per other listed buildings and rebuilt as per some other historical constructions as a dark museum. A couple of rotting corpses in there for the authentic smell and a sign witth enter at your peril.

If you got on early they used to put the crates of pies up against the wall outside the shop. The same wall people used to **** against when the queue for the toilet was too long

I understand the thought process behind going all seater in the 90's but how many of the issues were chronic underinvestment over decades?
We could have had the best of both worlds, improved facilities and sightlines but kept the overall feel of grounds.
I've always thought the seats in the lower tier (behind both goals) at Wembley are perfect for terracing and would have added so much to the stadium. Never understood why a closing roof wasn't incorporated as well.

The thought process for going all seater was to eradicate terraces at all costs. Especially after the membership scheme didn’t get through.

Vivid recollections of Burnley going there in early '74 for an FA Cup match. Over 26,000 on Boundary Park that day and a scintillating performance from us with a 4-1 win. Dobson (2), Fletch and James scored for us. A proper old-fashioned ground at the time. Hard to believe almost 50 years ago.

Looks far better now, although there is a place for safe standing, undoubtedly
I'm sure if you cant stand for 90 minutes plus half time, its nice to still be able to go to the football these days

I was born at Boundary Park too.
My dad did some coaching at Oldham, believe he temp managed 4 games for them in the early 60's didn't lose, before the then chairman Ken Bates brought in a named manager

My first ever visit to Boundary Park.
Remember being stood on that open terrace. Approaching the ground, there were loads of Clarets fans getting through a large hole torn out of the fencing at the back of that end.

Actually...thinking back. Must have been a couple of years later a hole was torn out of the fence, because it was a night game.

From memory it was called the Lookers Stand at some point, Lookers been the Ford dealerships but yes they won a stand!

Huge away following. Across the pitch and flushed the Oldham fans out of the Chadderton End for a total takeover. Of course it was better then. Nowadays is so sanitised.
