Southgate playing a blinder again
Maguire picked even though he's a aub at Man Utd.Tarks must now know he will never play for England while this fool is England manager. James was outstanding for us all last year and has been the same for Everton

Definitely not personal with regards Maddison, Phillips & Mount have just had better seasons
Good to see him pick 3 right backs so one can play at left back and the in form Maguire

When I've seen Everton this season, with my Claret spectacles removed, Tarks has still been outstanding. He's had some right dross picked in front of him, must have given up now.

Someone will be along in a minute to extol the virtues of GS and his constant attempts to reinvent the game.
Best thing that could happen to England right now is for GS to hand the reins over to Sarina Weigmann. Be a nice change for us to put some square pegs in some square holes. GS can’t help but mess with things. Tries too hard to be the thinking man. LET EM PLAY FFS!!!!

Like every manager. Southgate will be judged on results and achievements. He knows that better than anyone. Unlikely, therefore, that he would select any players other than those he believes most likely to succeed.
IMHO, of course.

There's 2 left backs plus one of the right backs plays either side and also one of the other right backs often plays in a back 3 when we play 5 at the back. As for Maguire he's been outstanding for England and is obviously a highly valued member of Southgate's squad so why anyone would expect him to be axed straight away is beyond me.
I think if anything there's a few too many centre halves but I guess this could be Southgate putting some of the younger ones in the squad in preparation for players like Dier, Maguire and Coady struggling which sounds like good forward thinking and good squad management.

Guehi, Coady and Maguire should be no where near an England squad right now.
Mount I haven't heard all season is he injured or just not starting? He makes some bad choice does GS always picks his faves

Mount has started 5/6 PL games and 2/2 UCL games this season?
Maguire was a key cog in the team that reached the WC semi and Euros final. Anyone thinking he was gonna be dropped - for, who, Ben White? lol - is living in cloud cuckoo land. With so little prep time for the WC it's largely going to be the Euros team/squad, and rightly so.

Coady is the most hilarious one of them all. Shifted out of Wolves by a younger, better and left footed Max Kilman, yet gets in over him.#
Oh and I'm so ready for Kalvin Phillips, who's barely kicked a ball for City, starting in CM over Bellingham, who's just starred in the CL, again, against City.

Phillips has played 13 minutes in total for City this season and he was absolutely outstanding for about 8 of them so fully deserving of his call up.
Maguire has been a rock when he's started for Utd this season, limiting the goals against in a defeat to Brighton, a hammering by Brentford and a loss to Real Sociedad. He probably won't start another game before the World Cup so I guess he'll be fresh and raring to go.
Luke Shaw has played a game and a half all season. Both defeats. You can't blame him for Brentford though as he was taken off at half time.
Then there's Grealish, Bowen, Ward Prowse, Mount, Chilwell and Coady who have been outstanding all season. There's nothing like picking players based on form.
Looks like we'll be going all out attack with only 12 defenders in the squad and only 4 of them are right backs.

How do you expect the England manager to pick every squad based on the most in-form players at the time? Southgate has been working with a core squad of players for a number of years with good success - he’s not just going to completely ignore integral players like Maguire and Phillips just because they’ve had a poor start to the season.

Really? Maguire a rock? He came on as a sub in the home game with Brighton, and was booked within a minute for manhandling the striker who was far too quick for him despite being on since the start. Give your head a wobble mate, he’s crap.Fresh and raring to go? Do me a favour.

He’s not picking players on reputation though is he? He’s picking players who are on form for England. The fact that they may not have played brilliantly, or much, in the entire 6 league games so far this season is neither here nor there. Imagine Southgate leaving Maguire, for example, out of a squad just 2 months before a World Cup. That would just be totally stupid.

Agreed it would. But leaving him out of the TEAM wouldn’t. He does not deserve to start. Woefully out of form, and no regular football. No longer a starter for me, despite his previous England career.

He's not picking players on reputation but on what players have actually delivered and contributed under his management. Southgate came in and did the opposite and gave everybody a chance including some young players who wouldnt have got a look in with previous regimes. This also included giving in form players their chance like he did with Cork and Tarks but ultimately he created a core squad of the players he knows and trusts and builds the team around that.
The core squad will evolve over time but he wont just axe a player who has never let him down because he is out of form at club level. This is the most together and club like squad we have seen for England for decades and thats because he doesnt just chop and change all the time.

Maguire is instrumental to Southgate’s set up so I’d be surprised to see him left out of the starting eleven for any important games, although I Have no idea what games are coming up if I’m honest. His lack of club form should be a concern for England fans for this reason.

Find McGuire, Shaw and Phillips ridiculous when they cannot start for their clubs. Must disagree with some on this Board re Coady. I think he is a hell of a player to have in your team-I am sure Tarkowki will back me up on that , and puzzled why Wolves outed him so suddenly.A great leader, talker, distributor and reader of the game-in fact I would say no CH in the England team can better these 4 qualities

The defence of Gareth he is picking the squad mainly on what the players have done.
We are likely to be relegated after these next round of matches, mainly due to losing 1-0 and 4-0 to Hungary. He could have had a look at Rico Henry who has played well all season but would prefer to have another look at Luke Shaw as well as his weird fascination with a right back at left back.
Phillips was the main man in midfield against Hungary we lost 4-0 at home, hasn't played hardly 5 minutes this season but deserves to be picked.
Grealish has been consistently poor since his move to City and certainly hasn't done more than Sancho this season, he has also offered very little to England, so is he being picked on form, his previous England efforts or reputation.

No international manager is going to drop players who performed for them at the previous tournament. Joachim Low kept picking Schweinsteiger and Podolski long after they'd stopped performing at club level. Deschamps still picks Griezmann despite him struggling for his clubs. Maguire has had two excellent tournaments in a row, of course he isn't going to get dropped, and rightly so.

Southgate will ultimately be judged by how England fare in Qatar, not on some meaningless Nations League games, however England's recent form is rather concerning just a few months away from a big tournament.
Glad Toney gets his chance, but Sancho is a surprise omission given his early season form for Utd. And the problem for GS is a lot of his mainstays are woefully out of form, or not even getting picked at their clubs.

Standard Southgate tournament coming up, regardless.
Smash Iran, narrowly beat Wales and draw with USA. Beat Senegal at a canter to reach the quarters then be knocked out by Argentina.

Because it's being knocked out as soon as England meet decent opposition, standard Southgate.
Forgot to add he'll probably play a 7-2-1 formation for most of the games, with Trippier, Walker and TAA all starting.

We'll definitely need two holding midfielders in the "double pivot" (tm) against Iran. Their pace on the counter attack is frightening.

Since winning the World Cup in 1966 would you care to name what teams we have beaten in major finals who you would consider as decent opposition baring in mind you are discounting Germany? I reckon you could probably argue for 3 or 4 at best in nearly 60 years of English football.
If you find a better win under Bobby Robson in his three major campaigns then i'll give you a bonus prize
