Their Goal

Post by ElectroClaret » Sat Sep 17, 2022 6:19 pm

For me, one of our defenders has to get a head on it before it gets any further in.
It came so fast and low that Muric couldn't be expected to get across to it first, though some may say he could at least have tried.
But i think its down to the defenders.

Opinions?

Yep at first I thought Muric but having watched it back a few times I’d definitely agree with you.

I’ve just watched it back and Maatsen and Breyer should be dealing with it front post, really that simple.

Shouldn’t have been a corner - offside in the build up.

But that Lino got nothing right all day, he was even worse in the second half.

Can understand people on the match thinking it was Muric's fault but I sometimes wonder what people are watching on the stream as it was bloody obvious to me once I'd seen the replays

Was the defenders at the near post to blame. Came through them about shoulder height dropping quickly so was never a ball any keeper could go for. Once it gets that low in the box its a lottery

We’re very weak dealing with set pieces. Something we need to work on. So many points dropped already this season due to goals from set pieces

Beyer has to attack the ball, just leaves their player a free unmarked header at the near post.

I think that was the following corner, when the guy just shoved him in the back to get the corner. That Lino is the worst I’ve seen so far (and there’s been some bad ones).

Beyer first full game and a new pairing, I would like to think they will improve with time and understanding.

I would much prefer the new pairing with Taylor at LB instead of Mattasan who is a poor defender

For all their corners today and the other night, the opposition put a player on to impede Muric. He struggles to deal with it and Cork, as captain, should be giving the ref a hard time about it or sorting it himself. After all it was exactly his role at corners under Dyche

After watching that - Muric needs to be stronger and go through their player who is impeding him, be stronger, elbow, fist or knee will do it. Won’t get too close again. Keepers are entitled to do that aren’t they (a little sarcasm as I remember the assault on Vydra last year)

Looked off side and then the Bristol player hold down our defender after the tackle so we can’t clear it- so a foul rather than a corner from my angle

That goal is disallowed in the PL. VAR would have shown a push on Cullen, otherwise he would have defended it at the near post

It's absolutely not Muric's fault. They did the same thing 3 times, including for the goal- rubs to drag Maatsen and Cullen forwards, get Beyer caught in no man's land as a result, and fizz an inswinger into the gap. Maatsen is, for me, primarily culpable as he leaves that near post zone, but I'm not sure about Cullen's role either - Beyer I'll give more leeway to as he's still bedding in.

When you're marking zonal, you can't allow runs to distract you like that. Period.

A GK simply can't let a ball come into his 6 yard box in front of the goal.

Muric came and claimed 2 balls veey well late on, so hopefully he has learned.

The defending was poor as well, but with ball playing defenders and a near 7ft keeper, the team needs the keeper claiming set plays.

He can’t claim that, it was fired in to a point several feet in front of the near post. It’s for the defenders to deal with, and the defender who was there was pushed out of the way

A dominant keeper would have removed the man in front of him and claimed that in his midriff with ease
Poor defending in general but Muric should command his 6 yard box

You cannot compare the balls late on with the ball for the goal. The ball for the goal is completely different - different pace, different trajectory. If the defenders at the front post do their job, Muric has nothing to do. The fact THB was so surprised they missed it that he couldn't stop it ricocheting off him and back across goal, you can't expect a goalkeeper to come and claim it. The fact he's 6 foot 6 plus is irrelevant once the ball is at waist height.

The only thing you can take from what he did late on is note that he's willing to try and claim when it's on. Sane as when he slipped at Preston. But it's simplistic to say that if the ball gets into the 6 yard box and an opponent gets it, it's the keeper's fault.

First of all, let’s credit the corner taker with hitting an almost perfect corner, very difficult to defend. Fast, slightly over head height to beat the near post defender, but dipping after that. Wouldn’t surprise me if he took free kicks on the edge of the area. The height of the ball and the packed penalty area make it almost impossible for Muric to deal with it. Just imagine the comments if he had conceded a penalty!! Burnley dealt with it by keeping their heads up and eventually winning the game. These things happen. Nothing to gain by trying to find someone to blame every time we concede. Bristol City have scored in every league game this season.

You said that the reason he came for the later ones was because he had learned from not coming for the earlier ones. That suggests that you think the situations were comparable. They weren't, at all.

If you think Muric is a poor keeper so be it - each to their own, but i think that pre conceived opinion is affecting your judgment of the goal we conceded.

I think you have mis read it.

It's not pre conceived as I want him to be brilliant. The club have invested a lot of money in him, so it just has to work.
Wasting 4m in the championship doesn't bare thinking about.

I've not misread it at all, but OK. I agree it would be a shame to waste 4m if indeed that's what we've spent on Muric. Nothing I saw today, or have generally seen this season, makes me think we have. He's made a couple of mistakes and was a but frenetic early on, but I think he's settling just fine.

Pretty academic talking about Hennessey being good enough.
He wanted to go to Forest to stay in the PL.

Personally, had he stayed, I'd have been happy with him as our number one.

Even if he stayed i dont think Hennessey would of been number 1. VK obviously wants his GK to play a certain way. still think we would of brought a new one in to start over him. Hence why we let him go

Muric wasn’t at fault with the goal today but he did get away with a couple - one when he went walkabout and the other when Harwood-Bellis stopped it from going in.

Set pieces are always going to be the hardest element to get right within a ‘new’ team, whether defensively or offensively.

I don’t understand the ‘rush’ we do when the ball is lobbed in, that’s all we do - lob it, then our players rush the box like a rush play in NFL. Way to easy to defend when you lob the ball and don’t thrust it low and flat.

As for defensively, we’ve stopped leaving men on the posts like we did under Dyche and I also remember City being vulnerable for many years with Kompany at centre half when it came to set pieces. It’ll take time but the blend between Cork and Brownhill (the (old)er) guard is great and it’s starting to click. That was a Damn good win today.

I'm sorry but most keepers would have come and claimed that ball or at least have gone for it. Maybe having someone who was as good as Pope at collecting balls from set pieces or corners have warped my opinion but Muric should be doing better.
Then you look at last week's and again while Muric slipped, it was his false start on the line that created it. Needs to be more of a presence in the box.
Albeit the defending was poor too.

Does it really matter who’s fault it is we won. We are a championship side with championship players we will concede soft goals.
