70 th minute

Was there really any need for the minutes applause? A respectful minutes silence followed by the national anthem left its legacy. I know these minutes' applause are regularly heard nowadays but personally I just felt it wasn't necessary today. Thoughts on it?

It’s the only time I’ve actually joined in a minutes applause.

They did this across all Premier League games this weekend.
Nice touch.

They looked liked scoring halfway through it. All respect to Her Majesty, but these minutes applauses are becoming tedious

Seeing how we are the Longside Burnley and the associated clapping didn't really take off, then a minutes applause for the mother of our most famous fan is appropriate.

No need for it as above respects perfectly paid by all at the start of the game.

Some people'll moan about anything.
Didn't do any harm, did it?

I really don’t like it. It’s fine to have tributes/silences/anthems before the game; today was made worse by fans standing up. I didn’t see the Bristol corner. I would be interested to hear what the players think about it.

Fine by me and really what harm or rather inconvenience did it cause. This was for an outstanding person who devoted her whole life to the people of her country and to many others abroad.

A variety of responses as I guessed there might be. As was pointed out it coincided with a corner for the opposition being thrown into our box which caused some consternation, at least it did for me.

Thought that the minutes silence was the quietest silence I can ever remember.
Not sure if it was the speakers being out of sync but impressive that the Cricket Field speed sang the national anthem about 6 words ahead of everyone else.

Surreal, players should stop and clap, as mentioned when you have one eye on the Game it becomes a token gesture.

Read the OP again. It's not a moan at all. Merely an observation.

That wasn't the Burnley fans singing too quickly. Admittedly, I was surprised.

Some people at a football match clapped for a minute, it’s not anything I’m going to get bothered about.

Go to any football match involving the national anthem, it’s impossible to sing that slow, fans always finish 2-3 seconds before.
And I say that having heard it well over 50 times watching England

Personally I enjoy these memorial services but do find the football they sometimes play during them a bit distracting. Maybe time to knock that bit on the head and focus on the grief, death and remembrance.

Minute silence was fitting and moving. The minutes applause was stupid.

Very impressive
Not quite as impressive as people managing to keep it going as a corner to them swung into our box though

Problem for me was that when i took my cap off to commemorate the Queen, I was looking straight into the sun and couldn't tell which team was which.

Today aside, which was somewhat different, has the club put a stop to supporting mid-game applauses but putting something on the big screen?
Personally, I hope so. Last season must have been something of a record with how many there seemed to be - I think we may even have had two in one game!
I had no issue whatsoever with the additional show of respect at 70 minutes, today.

Had they scored, it would have been disallowed, The Daily Mail would have instantly self-combusted and the scorer would have been hanged outside The Park View.
For what it’s worth - I think it’s been lovely the 70th minute applause. Even though it’s the 71st minute. Discuss……..

She died in her 71st year as Queen, so it's fair enough. Just as when (say) a 42 year old dies, he has completed 42 years and died in his 43rd, so the miute's applause (if considered necessary) would take place after 42 minutes have been played, and into the 43rd.

If we really wanted to show our respect we would have done the minutes applause in the 70th year of the match.

Completely unnecessary after the minute silence & national anthem. It made for a strange atmosphere as it coincided with them putting us under a bit of pressure for the first time in the second half.

Bit disrespectful for the referee not to play 6 minutes added time so we could have done another one on 96.
I’d have liked another chance to show people my respect.

Yet to happen I think at the turf and maybe other games but how strange will it be if a goal goes in for the other team and everyone is stood clapping.

As long as we can then have a minutes applause in commemoration of it's death.

I do think that if Bristol City had scored during / immediately after the applause then the reaction to it on here would not have been so supportive of it.
For me it was a distraction and actually took away the dignity of the occasion as the minute's silence achieved.

It also happened during the Villa Soton game, a Southampton player was about to take a throw in when the clapping started, so he paused and clapped for a while.
I was happy to stand and applaud the service the Queen had given our country.
