Looking for recommendations for any decent pubs in/around the town centre for Saturday afternoon please (pref with real ale)

Not from Bury , but there is a nice little Real Ale bar called The Thirsty Fish it is on the corner as you head from the Bus station
heading towards the market, opposite the Amusement Arcade ..
Also The Trackside Bar is on the Train Station, If you know Rawtenstall it's Bury's version of The Buffer Stops ..

The Met usually has some decent cask ales.

Bury based Claret.

Broad Street Social, just off Silver Street. It is Brewsmiths Brewery tap. As mentioned The Thirsty Fish which does a few Deeply Vale ales, last time I went it was cash only.

They would be my pick.

Others include,

Wyldes , Holts pub.
Art Picture House , spoons opposite bus station.
The Clarence used to be okay.
Trackside
Two Tubs, Thwaites pub.

If you want some grub to get you started/finish up, the Bella Italia (not the chain) is a great italian place, and just at the top of the ramp from the trackside. They used to do a great lunchtime meal, although i admit its been a while since i was around there.

I rented a house in Edenfield for 6 months and used to go down Bury for a few on Friday afternoons, bumped into plenty of Bury clarets from the old days out on the lash

Thanks for the information guys, never been drinking in Bury before, seems there's enough to go at for a mid/late afternoon sesh

Stick to picture house and Rayners you’ll be alright ,
Some characters in them pubs

Late to this one but would recommend Trackside if you're looking for real ales - lovely place with a lot of character (and characters who drink there!)

If you fancy venturing a bit further out the town centre, Holcombe Tap in Ramsbottom is brilliant.

Ended up having less drinking time than we'd planned but managed to sample the Thirsty Fish and Trackside- both good recommendations

Also had a nice pint of my favorite ale 'Titanic Plum Porter' in the John Peel

Was pleasantly surprised with Bury, will definitely revisit and allow a bit more time to sample one or two more hostelries

That will be The Robert Peel, used to be a spoons, thought it had closed down however after a Google search a company from Bolton bought it. We Don’t venture into Bury that often, prefer going to Ramsbottom. Glad you had a good time in Bury.

Whoops, yes, the Robert Peel, not John Peel, Freudian slip on my part

We just assumed it was a Spoons with the feel, layout and cheap prices of the place but come to think of it there was no
Wetherspoons branding inside or outside.

Will check out the Two Tubs and Wyre next time as well, all in close proximity.

Quoonbeatz is the cool kid in Bury....... whilst Bodge can recommend old men pubs, and parks to drink in.

Au contraire you have it the wrong way round, you will catch us both occasionally in the Port Street Beer House in the Northern Quarter where the hoi polloi of the northern powerhouse chew the fat.

I was last in PSBH a couple of months ago, bodge nowhere to be seen. I asked at the bar and they referred to 'the breakdancing Yorkshireman' having been in the night before, so I must have missed him by a day.

Not been out in Bury for years but Trackside is about the pick of the bunch. Heard good things about Broad St but not been. Automatic or rather the bar between there and the met are fine if you're going to the met for a gig.
