I’d like to see the 4-4-2/4-2-2-2 VK used at Anderlecht and we used pre season

Muric

Roberts
THB
Taylor
Maatsen

Cork
Cullen

Brownhill
Zaroury

Rodriguez
Tella

So that’s Brownhill RM, Zaroury LM out of possession

that looks OK to me, but not sure we'll do that. There is scope for a 3 at the back with THB Bayer and Taylor though but not sure what that will give us. We're normally OK in open play and can deal with most threats, we do look weak on defending set plays though and our formation doesn't affect that

Muric
Roberts THB Beyer Taylor
Benson Cork Zaroury
Brownhill
Jayrod Tella

Depending which wing we are attacking down Roberts and Benson move forward, or Taylor and Zaroury move forward.
Always leaving 3 at the back, but as a must we have to have Jay AND Tella in the middle on the edge of the back line, with Brownhill just behind them.
Get the ball into Jay and Tella as quickly and as often as possible. My gut tells me we score more goals from 10 half chances than we do from 5 good chances.

What I’d like to see won’t happen, but, regardless:

(Cork our man of the match last night for me, but I feel to get the required bodies and penetration in forward areas, we need to sacrifice one of him or Cullen. By all means revert to Cork/Cullen once in possession of a comfortable lead).

After a dozen games I think we are starting to sense our best 11, and I think VK now showing he is not afraid to make big calls. Having seen Beyer twice I dont think we can leave him out or rest him. He looks very composed. I also felt last night that JBG no longer has it in him to play 90 mins and be effective too, particularly if he plays on the right.

Firstly - this midfield shape worked brilliantly at Huddersfield so I don't entirely understand why we've moved away from it on the road. There's plenty of quality on the ball and it gives us a little bit more solidity in midfield.

Roberts will come again but he's been culpable, in my view, for the last two goals we've conceded. You can make an argument for him over Maatsen, and Taylor left back but I'd go for Maatsen on balance I think.

Yeah, don’t mind your team. Think we moved away from that midfield shape as we weren’t getting enough penetration which Tella then provided us. Though I do feel we were playing through the lines better like that. I’d also like to see that shape but I’ve suggested Zaroury in where Bastien is for more creativity.

Muric
Roberts THB Bayer Taylor
Cork Cullen
Brownhill Zaroury
Tella Jay

Tella more centrally with Jay
Brownhill going out wide right, Zaroury out wide left on their natural sides

Tella and Brownhill swapping

Recipe for 3 points right there...

I'm not sure inverted wingers works as well if we aren't crossing regularly and only have 1 to aim at, I think the going on the outside dnd pulling back offers both the high cross for Jay, and low pull back for on coming Brownhill/Opposite winger

After the Stoke game, its clear to me we have to have someone - or more than someone willing to try break the lines

As good as J Rod is as a striker I watched him trot round infront of the two centre halves and was rarely more than a meter away from them.

Never in a position to get the ball and never trying to break the lines and cause trouble/danger.

Its a concern of mine that this is how VK is asking him to play.
But its taking 90 mins of possession to score a goal and 90 seconds to concede a goal at the minute.

There was a brief ‘boo’ at FT - the natives are getting restless.

My hope is; that this is just a temporary strategy until Twine/Churlinov is fit.

But JRod could not have been more ineffectual last night if he tried.

I can't for the life of me see why anyone would drop Cullen or Cork so here's my lineup:

Muric
Roberts THB Beyer Taylor Maatsen
Cork Cullen
Brownhil Tellal
Jay Rod

It's tough dropping Vits and Benny, but I'd push Roberts and Maatsen up more and play the three at the back.

You could play Ronaldo up front and he would struggle.

I’d like to see a creative number 10 in the team. Brownhill very harshly dropped but it’s him or Cork for 1 spot and Corks been brilliant recently

I dont wish to sound aggressive or argumentative,

Im genuinely interested in the discussion.

What would you change? Im assuming you think its the team/tactics as you’re attempting to defend JRod.

Where is it going wrong in your eyes?

I’d like to think if we’re going to have 70% possession, we wouldnt be scraping 1-0’s.

Id like to see us go back to trying the 4-2-2-2 formation we played in the first few games

-------------------Muric-----------------------
Roberts------THB------Beyer------Maatsen
--------------Cork------Cullen--------------
------------Brownhill Bastien--------------
--Tella------------Jay-Rod----------------------

I thought we played a lot faster and more direct through the midfiled between the lines with Maatsen giving us the width on the left and Tella in the role Costello played with freedom to pull wide or to get closer to Jay.

I was surprised when we signed so many wingers as I hoped we'd maybe have at least one less winger and one more dynamic forward facing centre mid to compete with Brownhill, Bastien and maybe Twine when fit.

We have so many wingers I cant see us moving away from the formation we are currently playing but I think the 4-2-2-2 would be a lot harder for teams to sit in against as we would be able to get player into holes and pockets of space to play through them rather than around the side

This ...really...!

There is clearly a problem on the Left of defence, if it wasn't patently obvious before Cardiff and Stoke it is now. You cannot have 3 players free on the right hand side of our box in the 87th minute with Vitinho next to the penalty spot and Tella 10 yards behind the play.

You can't expect Tella to be both right midfielder and a goal scoring centre-forward.

So, I'd bring Bastien back in and push Tella forward. I have no opinion on Roberts but I assume that VK is reluctant to play him as a wing back in the 4-2-2-2 so another solution has to be found - Bayer is one option.

Cullen needs to play more centrally and can drop into the back four when we are in possession while Bayer, Brownhill Cork Bastien and Maatsen can flood the midfield and give the team width.

The reality is, regardless of those who like to argue the unarguable, we play a host of the better teams in the division from Oct 22 to Dec 10. We can't go into that period losing last minute goals to teams 19th and bottom of the table like Birmingham and Coventry.

No panic, but Coventry seems a good time to try something different.

I think the line up will be as follows -

Muric
Roberts, Harwood-Bellis, Taylor, Maatsen
Cullen, Bastien
Gudmundsson, Brownhill, Tella
Rodriguez

Possibly Zaroury instead of Gudmundsson, although he hasn’t looked great coming off the bench the last 2 games. I would like Cork to start but 3 games in 7 days might be too much to ask which might also be the same problem for Jay.

Either way, it won’t be an easy game today despite what the table looks like at present.

Muric
Bayer THB Taylor Vitinho
Benson Cork Brownhill Zaroury
Tella Rodriguez

Vitinho has been the most consistent performer at left back this season.
It's time Roberts is dropped and I like the look of Bayer.
Benson starts but could have picked Gudmundsson.
Currently Cullen and Cork are doing the same job and I think Corks looked better at it in recent weeks.
Brownhill is not a number ten.
Tella needs to be used more centrally.
Zaroury needs a start to see what he's capable of.

This is a real issue for us, 2 top players and great in possession but neither offering much going forward and neither going to score. Both start if we are away in a tough game and need to keep control but in a game where we are big favourites a single pivot suffices.

Controversial opinion but Cullen gave the best version of himself at Huddersfield and hasn’t lived up to the hype since for me (whilst playing decent in this system).

I think the issue with Zaroury is that he offers even less defensively than Tella and you cannot afford that if your full back is bombing on. Maatsen in particular needs a little more help.

If you want a compromise option its JBG on the left, but for me until he's more attuned to the English game Zaroury is best used as an alternative to Tella as the foil to Rodriguez.

BPF between the sticks. The rest will take care of itself.
