Very few people, myself included, who post on here can abide Manchester United but I respect Bobby Charlton. A great player and a true ambassador for the game.

I think it was him that said "if you don't shoot you don't score" I always played thinking that and majority of goals I scored were from outside the box.
Happy birthday Bobby Charlton.

Ultimate legend, world wide.
I was on holiday in a remote village in Turkey. Early 70s. Offered chai by the locals, as walking up the road.
They were most welcome. Their English was: English?
Yes. Aah. Bobby Charlton! With all the facial expressions to go with it.
Had a pair of Bobby Charlton football boots, after my original Stanley Matthews boots, with wooden studs!
Happy Birthday Sir Bobby.

One of the true gents in the game, and he had a mean strike on him to boot.

Was very privileged to see him live both at Turf Moor and Old Trafford and once for England at Wembley

I went to the Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools as a kid. He was there throughout and a lovely bloke to boot.

Correct. On wiki he was also booked in a league game against Chelsea. Both are forgivable.

The word 'legend' is bandied about willy-nilly these days. When used in the same sentence as the name Bobby Charlton, it fits perfectly.
Happy Birthday Sir Bobby.

Ian, I had a very similar experience in the 70's when I was in a small restaurant in Paris. The owners started talking with me asking where I was from.
And as soon as I said that I was English straight away they came out with the name Bobby Charlton.
A great footballer and even more importantly a lovely man and a gentleman.

Went to this in 1986 ( I think) He had a kind chat with me because I think I was looking a bit lost. Always remember we were doing a shooting exercise hitting dead balls from the edge of the area. He watched us for a bit, then showed us how it should be done. We just watched in awe as this 'old man' banged it into the top left, top right and anywhere else he wanted.

Slightly belated- Happy 85th birthday Sir Bobby.
Very, very good player over a protracted period and quite clearly a fine man and footy enthusiast to boot.
Hope I'm still looking so good at 85 in 12-13 years time.

When my brother was teaching in Rochdale he met Bobby Charlton briefly a couple of times at one of the football coaching class sessions. When my brother told him he was a Burnley supporter, Bobby immediately went into lavish praise for Jimmy McIlroy, calling him one of the greatest players he had played against.

My walk to work used to take me through St James Park , London. As passed over the footbridge there was large film crew and extra lighting stood round this man.
Slightly irked They all stared at me as I called out “ Hi Bobby good to see you!”
“And you! “ was his reply.
