I don’t think we’ll win the World Cup, but I’m not sure what it’s got to do with the stats you quote.

I thought the same. There's 70 players to choose from there, playing in the richest, possibly strongest league in the world. Unless you think the 71st best player is forced to play in the Championship 'cos of all those foreigners when he should be leading us to world cup glory, I don't see a problem.

Because we will spend far Too much time trying not to concede than actually trying to assert our (what should be) attacking authority on the game.

We will be lucky to get out the group, and when we eventually go out to the first decent team we meet we will announce the whole adventure as a step in the right direction. We will continue to do that for every tournament coming up until this generation of attacking players are drawing their pensions.

Or, to shorten it to two words…. Gareth Southgate.

We are def not crap-but we lack belief and that comes from the manager which is why we bottled it against Croatia and Italy. We took the lead early in both games and **** the bed because we did not believe it was going to happen. We panicked and lost our way where as the opposition waited their moment and took it-because they knew they could do it. If Fergie or Jose had been manager we win both those games.

With Southgate in charge we've got a real chance but there's another 3 or 4 brilliant teams as good as us so whilst we've a decent chance its more likely not to happen.

Id be very surprised if we dont make last 4 as we seem to be peaking at just the right time however in terms of judging us I would suggest the following
  • Anything less than reaching the last 8 is failure and Southgate has to go
  • QF's is meeting expectations
  • Semi's will be a very good result
  • Final will be excellent
  • Winning the thing will be out of this world and make Southgate one of the all time legends of English football

We got to the semis last time and the final of the last Euros, I can’t believe people think we don’t have a very good chance.

Forget the utterly meaningless friendlies we’ve played since the Euros (I include the nations league in this) as they’ve never been a barometer of how good or bad an England side will be when it matters.

Is this post for real? Peaking at the right time? The recent Nations League results/performances prove the opposite. And Southgate? Really? His obsession with primarily fearing the opposition, will undoubtedly mean boring draws with Wales and USA, and a tough draw and exit in the round of 16. The guy is clueless.

QF isn't meeting expectations, Southgate has said since he got the job that everything he did was building towards winning Qatar 2022 so anything less than winning the world cup is failure.
We will be lucky to get out of a very easy group

Poor defence and a poor manager who is out of his depth at the highest level as proved in the Euros final when the opposition manager got the better of him

Took the team further in a major tournament than any manager since Sir Alf Ramsey, beating Germany along the way, but still ‘out of his depth at the highest level’.
Fair enough if you don’t like Southgate but don’t just post nonsense.

I don't mind Southgate, think he'd done a brilliant job to turn us into genuine challengers, but I think this might be a tournament too far for him

He's still persisting with Maguire, and we look like a side playing slightly below its potential, and as we've only ever won one world cup, and that at home, rather suggests we won't win it

But ever hopeful!

OGS got Man u. to a European final (and 2nd in the league) but I bet nobody would ever want him to be our manager.

Let’s be honest the reason we won’t win it is because we don’t have any world class CBs and our midfield is not particularly strong in the CDM role. (When I say not strong, I mean they are too similar, we don’t have anyone in that role that can thread a pass or create anything).

By this logic, every single England manager other than Alf Ramsey have been out of their depth. It's ridiculous terminology to use for a manager that took us to a successive semi-final and final in major tournaments. If you don't like his football, or him as a person, fair enough, but come on.

A few points on here I agree with, particularly Southgate's tendency to set up not to lose to the opposition, rather than to go out and beat them. Also his move from picking players in form, to players 'who have never let England down' (Maguire :? ) has got the media turning on him.

Positives are Bellingham is in red hot form, Foden and Grealish look to be hitting a nice patch at the right time (if GS picks them) and Kane is doing what Kane does.

Negatives is the defence look very shaky (at best), Pickford still looks suspect and we're heading in to the tournament in very average form.

In the USA and Wales there are two teams desperate to beat us, which could even result in us not getting out of the group. Even then, the draw would suggest we're likely to bump into Argentina which I think would see us out.

As Lancs has said, I think this may be one tournament too far for Southgate.

Could we win the World Cup?
Yes

Will we win the World Cup?
Doubtful

Is Southgate too cautious?
Absolutely

Do we make use of our best players?
Not at all

Is jdrobbo right?
I reckon so. Brazil or Argentina for me

I think fast paced, high press type PL football doesn't work in tournament football; particularly, in hot countries.

We don't have the kind of players that can manage the tempo of a game like Modric, Xavi or Iniesta.

The closest we have is Grealish who often can't get into the team because, frankly, they don't seem to have the football brain to go with their ability.

The culture of the country prefers hard work and commitment above intelligence. We have a low productivity economy and we have a low productivity football team. We will get to the quarter finals and then fall to a world class thinking footballer like Luca Modric who will slowly dismantle all the hard work, effort and sweat with the ease of a schoolboy picking the wings off a fly.

We can afford to go defensive if our front 3 are Kane, Foden and Grealish with Bellingham part of whatever midfield we have.

Quite a lot of posts on this thread I would have attributed to devil's advocate.

Perhaps you should concentrate on getting out of the group stage first.

I've considered the OP's hypothesis for a few minutes now. My conclusion is that there is very, very little correlation between the data point and the assertion of its effect. It's can be torn apart in so many ways, so my thinking is that the OP is fishing to start a debate on "brexiting" football and employing a more stringent nationalistic policy to permitted players. Judging by the way the thread has actually gone, which is to discuss the chances of winning rather than the ratio of English players in the PL, his fishing expedition has failed

Not bothered about winning this one.

It's not a World Cup tournament it's a fraud and a joke, which is what supposed high end football is now anyway.

Can't see England getting anywhere near winning this one. sure, we got to the last 4 in 2018, but that was mainly due to a favourable draw and also the surprising underperformance of the usual suspects notably the South American nations who will surely fare better in the hot weather climate Qatar will offer.

Simply England aren't good enough in defence or able to retain possession enough to control a game when it matters, as the poor displays against Croatia and Italy aptly demonstrate.

The big opportunity was in the recent Euro's where home advantage gave England their best chance for many years, and even then we couldn't get over the line.
