The quintessential game of two halves. Worst 45 of the season followed by possibly the best.

Muric 5 should do better on both goals. One decent save in a second half where he had little to do.

Roberts 6 shaky first half, fine second

Harwood-Bellis 6 shaky first half, fine second

Taylor 6 shaky first half, fine second

Vitinho 6 shaky first half, fine second

Cullen 7 overrun in the first, dominant in the second

Brownhill 7 same as Cullen, great to see him pressing them right to the end, made himself a goal

Gudmundsson 5 didn't work for him in the centre, not helped by getting booked in the 1st minute

Tella 6 struggled out wide, he was quite literally on the periphery but playing more central worked really well. Poacher's finish.

Zaroury 8 some player is this lad. Difficult first half like everyone else but electric second 45 and what a ******* gaol that was

Barnes 4 tripe

Benson 7 the switch worked perfectly and put them right on the back foot. Fortunate goal but he puts it in the right areas for that to happen.

The defence was all at sea first half and that appeared to feed through the rest of the team but ones the changes of personnel and tactics came at half time it was a different story. We got right on the front foot and they simply couldn't handle us. It takes character to stage such a comeback from 2 down and playing so badly. Bodes very well for the season. The best team in the league is still learning and will only get better.

Muric 5 - Would need to see second goal back to commit to this, otherwise 6. It looked like it was near post and quite simple on my one viewing.

Roberts 5 - Part of a really bad defensive performance.
THB 6 - Poor passing at times from a player who’s so good at this normally.
Taylor 5 - Not a centre back by any stretch of the imagination, I really feel this experiment needs to stop.
Vitinho 6

Brownhill 7 Plus one for the goal.
Cullen 6
JBG 6
Zaroury 7 Superb finish, plus one for the goal.

Barnes 4
Tella 7

Benson 9 Outstanding, his pace and positivity on the ball changed the game.

Muric 6 - have watched the second goal back and think it’s very harsh to be criticising him
Roberts 5 - one on one defending is generally fine but it’s a shocking header for their second
THB 6 - much more assured and aggressive second half
Taylor 6 - think Beyer is much better here, CT limits our build up play too much imo
Vitinho 5 - lost his man for the first goal, he does a job at lb but far better rb
Cullen 6 - 4 first half, 7 second
Brownhill 6 - took his goal well, score marked like Cullen
Tella 6 - happier more central
Zaroury 8 - threat throughout and what a stunning goal, PL class
JBG 5 - struggled in that role I felt
Barnes 3 - worst of an awful bunch first half, offers no out ball, no control and constantly falling over

Benson 9* - completely changed the game, goal and assist, really good stuff

Muric 6 some good some not so good
Roberts 6
THB 6
Taylor 6
Vitinho 7
Cullen 6 playing as 1 of a central 2 doesn’t suit.
Brownhill 7 (+1 for goal)
Zaroury 7 (poor 1st half, great 2nd half)
Tella 7 (always a threat)
JBG 6 (Not really involved but his challenge gave Zaroury the chance)
Barnes 3 - first time I think I’ve scored anyone a 3. He must be doing amazingly in training for VK to even consider starting him

Low scores because obviously taken the first half into account. Would be eights and nines if just the second half.

Have just arrived home in Newcastle at 7.30pm after dreadful replacement bus and metro ride. Amazed at the generally low marks on here, yes the 1st half was poor but 2nd was wonderful.

I tried to balance out the 8s of the second half with the 4s of the first half. They were polar opposites after all.

Game of two halves

Said my lad at half time that this is a real test of how we deal with adversity, and boy, did we answer that

One hell of a team talk from VK, and a tactical switch bringing Benson on for Barnes, and we looked the real deal almost straight away

Four goals in a half to completely turn it around is some performance, and you won't see many better strikes than the one from Zanoury

Knackered now I've got home!

Muric 6 - maybe could have done better with the 2nd, but crucial save at 2-2
Roberts 6 - he's getting overloaded on the back post on a regular basis, and its a real issue for us defensively. V good 2nd half
Taylor 6 - crap first half, good 2nd
THB 7- crap first half, exceptional 2nd
Vitinhio 7 - beyond crap first half, absolutely sensational 2nd
Tella 7 - struggled first half, much better 2nd and a poachers goal
Cullen 7 - very poor first half, really good 2nd
Brownhill 7 - poor, then really good 2nd
Gudmundsson 7 - I thought he did okay, its good to see him being able to play more centrally without getting injured - big tackle in the lead up for No 3
Zourary 8 - Magnificent strike, he was quiet but when you can do that who cares?
Barnes 4 - unlucky to start in the worst 1st half of the season, but couldn't have done less I feel. He's just not doing anything that he used to sadly

Subs
Benson 8 - changed the game

It would have been easy for VK to stick on Jay and Cork to pull us out of the s**t, but he didn't, and the team responded magnificently after a poor 1st half

Its starting to look pretty good

I said the same to my mate next to me but he rightly pointed out, you have to commit one way or the other in those situations

Muric 5 their second looked soft getting beat at the near post, and with 3 players over he probably should have come for the initial cross, Roberts made the header on the 6 yard line.
Not sure what happened to the 1st appeared to try and guess a side and way too early. ( maybe a rush out and make himself big would have been better )

Roberts 5 not great yesterday, rank bad 1st half, clawed it back a bit 2nd

Harwood-Bellis 6 good footballer, doesn't seem to have the "defenders nose" when it comes to danger ( appreciate his age, but I mark on performance, not age/potential)

Taylor 7 possibly the best of the back line

Vitinho 6 prefer him at RB

Cullen 5 slow and ponderous , bot really kicked on from what I saw v Huddersfield, thought he was another Jack Cork and wouod boss the middle

Brownhill 6 poor first half, better 2nd, and his energy got us the 4th which put the game to bed

Zaroury 8 average 1st half but much better 2nd, looks some player

Tella 6 isolated and wrong option taken all 1st half, looked far more comfortable through the middle

Gudmundsson 6 put in some cracking crosses, think the early booking on 2 minutes meant he had to hold off slightly in the game

Barnes 4 although I think he should have won a foul or 2, and a few balls into him were at silly heights or pace, he wasn't very good.
He really shouldn't be anywhere near the matchday squad never mind team.
He just doesn't suit the style at all, and the referees, stopped falling for his dives and falls a long time ago

Benson 8 couldn't have asked for more from a sub, their defence was frightened to death of him, hopefully he gets some confidence to just keep attacking his fullback, he came back a few times when he could have done him.

VK 8 got to hand it to him, he flipped the game on his head, he said he mentioned to a few players they weren't good enough and they reacted.
He could have taken 2 or 3 off to be fair, but a sub, a reshuffle and an early goal set the tone.

3 home games now to get some wins on the board

Muric 6
Roberts 6
Vitinho 7
THB 6
Taylor 6 - he's not a central defender, never will be.
Brownhill 7
JBG 6
Zaroury 8
Cullen 5
Barnes 4 - terrible. His whole game is feeling a touch and dropping to the floor. Then whinging at the ref that he didn't receive a free kick for his blatant dive. Get rid.
Tella 7

Benson 9

Muric 5 - could he have done better with the second goal? Distribution was poor.

Roberts 6 - lacklustre first 45, solid and more progressive second 45
THB 7 - Poor first 45, grew stronger as the game went on
Taylor 7 - Not a great first 45 but was mentally tough during this period which kept it at 2-0. Good second half.
Vitinho 5 - abysmal first 45 where he was clearly targeted and went awol plenty of times, much better second 45

Cullen 7 - struggled without Cork next to him. Much more like his old self second half.
Brownhill 7 - even though I don’t think he’s a proper no 10 we looked a far better team when Cork came on and he moved forward.

Zaroury 8 - tried to hurt them in the first 45 but didn’t get the ball in the right areas. Sensational in the second half.
JBG 6 - Has the guile to be a no 10 but not the dynamism. Was ok but not the answer there.
Tella 6 - gave his all but he’s not an out and out winger. Looked more comfortable down the middle.

Barnes 3 - awful. Offered nothing. Lots of time for him but he’s just not suited to this team or style of play. Rightly hooked.

Benson 9 - unplayable. Great pace, control and work rate. He frightened them to death and changed the game.

Tricky game to score as the first half was as poor as I’ve seen. Sunderland didn’t have to really do anything but found themselves 2 up. It annoys me that some of our players have a tendency to dangle their foot and not try to win the ball - there needs to be some responsibility taken when defending, digging in and being tough. This is why we concede soft goals.

That said, it was a superb comeback - fantastic spirit.

Muric 6

Roberts 5
THB 6
Taylor 5
Vitinho 6

Brownhill 6
JBG 5
Cullen 6

Tella 6
Barnes 5
Zaroury 8

Benson 8 MOM his introduction completely changed the game
Rodriguez 6
Cork 6

Very difficult to mark some individual performances given how poor they were during the first half and how much-improved they were in the second.

6 (average) and 5 (below average) all over the shop. If Benson doesn't get a 9 or 10 he never will.

Taylor is apparently not a central defender but we have one the best goals-against stats in the league with him mainly playing there

Muric - can’t make a save
Taylor - not a central defender
Cullen - slow and ponderous
Roberts - no clue how to defend

It’s amazing how we have scored the most goals, conceded the 3rd least and lost 1 in 16 isn’t it. I’d say it’s almost a miracle.

From tv
A lot of low marks given for this match, but, to me, we got 3 points away at an intimidating ground after coming back from two goals down. That has to be a good performance.
Muric 6 he still doesn't do the simple things right
Roberts 7 thought he had a good game
THB 7 another good game overall
Taylor 6 I would prefer to see him at left back
Vitihno 6 not a great defensive left back
Cullen 7 worked very hard
Brownhill 8 one of his better games
Zaroury 7 what a goal
Tella 8 he has that wonderful happy knack/skill of scoring goals
Barnes 3 he is going to have to pull his finger out if he is going to get the 20 championship goals some of his fans on here think he will.
JBG 7 worked hard

Benson 9 mom changed the game completely
