I think you'll find that people who fly to Genoa and back from Barbados, even if they are 80- years old, are fitter than those people in nursing homes.

Done the cruise experience and it isn't for us but maybe when we are older in our mid to late 70s and can't get around the same we think differently

Great holiday for kids up to 16 but if you are a couple and are fit and like plenty of exercise it really isn't for you.
The environment can feel extremely claustrophobic with a lot of very unhealthy passengers who literally try and eat themselves to death.

The ships are that big these days that at the more picturesque places you land by launch at it takes ages and a battle to get ashore. When the ship enters port it more often than not docks in the ugliest and smelliest part of the City

Sorry Top Claret. If these are your thoughts I reckon you chose the wrong cruise !
We have only done 2, but they were great, on small ships holding 800ish passengers.
Singapore to Hong Kong and Auckland to Sydney with fantastic ports of call. There are some really good cruises to be had.

It's not for everyone. We took our gran on a cruise, and we all hated it. Basically everything that TopClaret said in his post. Great if you enjoy enforced socialisation with boring 'considerably richer than you' types, hand-holding itineraries, claustrophobia, third-rate entrainment, apart from a couple of interesting lectures, and gluttony.

Yeah, you can avoid the 'entertainment' by finding a bar after you've negotiated through the crowds, who are on the move after their evening meal and fighting their way towards the 'entertainment', but you can't avoid the dull people talking about their investments, successful business, or how much their home is worth.

Take plenty of elasticated waist trousers and a small bungee rope to tie yourself to the buffet bars for flexibility. The buffets and meals are amazing!
Expect to put on a stone, belch and f*rt numerous times daily.

And above all, you can't avoid the boring old grumps who are determined to be miserable.

Pre-covid there were about 2 million cruise passengers per year from this country, and I don't think they all shared your experience.

We’ve done two Hurtigruten cruises, one in November one in Feb. If you want snow go in Feb/March as global warming means the snow is arriving much later. We saw the northern lights both trips on several occasions.

Hurtigruten is like a posh ferry! You can eat as a couple of join others, very relaxed dining. Not much entertainment as such, so very relaxed. Trips are very expensive but you need to book prior to leaving to make sure you are on them as limited numbers eg dog sleigh, reindeer sleigh, snowmobile.

People on board were a mix of tourists and locals using the ferry to commute, shop etc. The ship
Stops off in a lot of places , some very small one horse towns, but it’s interesting to see where people live.

Would recommend the trip but not if you’re infirm, you need good grips on your shoes as it can be very icy, we took yak tracks. Drinks expensive but you can stock up in the duty free shop at Bergen airport when you arrive.

We did a Hurtigruten cruise on the Richard With a few years back - cabin was very small (though me and the wife are a bit on the large side) - food was excellent and we saw the Northern Lights several days in a row. Also did a husky sledding experience which was fantastic.

I like cruises. Every day a different place to wander around. Food and drink on tap. Stuff to do if tmyou are at sea and evening entertainment is first class.

I prefer TUI/Marella formerly Thomson. All inclusive.
Every member of the crew says hello if you pass by.

Going down the coast of former Yugoslabia is recommended.

Much younger participants nowadays.

Used to work as a Junior officer on the cruise liners and saw enough to put me off ever wanting to go near one as a paying passenger. Fundamentally unsafe but I can see the attraction as they can be great fun.......................... for the officers ;)
