Benson : Starter Or Impact Sub?

Post by ElectroClaret » Sat Nov 12, 2022 2:16 pm

Yes, definitely deserved a start against Sheff U, and was very good, particularly in the first half.
However, it did mean we had no game-changer to come on from the bench and as we saw, the second half was a disaster.

Whenever the lad comes on, the oppositions tired legs can't handle him and he's always changed things when he gets on.

Thoughts?

Starter - for sure. He is on serious form, confident and he will blow them away !

As a general rule don’t you start with your best players? For me he’s absolutely done enough to deserve to start. Though the question seems to be can he impact the game over 90 minutes.

I do understand the debate.

But same view as as couple of the guys on here - starter, seriously special player at this level, as is Zaroury.

Let's back ourselves to win the game as a result of having better players, and not over think it.

Hopefully have Churlinov and Twine back in December, which gives us more options to affect games from the start and during the match.

Other than another number nine the front areas of the team with Westwood almost fit appear strong and with plenty of depth, it's the back line that still needs assessing and addressing.

He's got to start after last week, why on earth would you bench a player who's just bagged a brace and is flying in confidence.

If and when we get ahead we can always ring the changes, but start our best XI where possible.

If he starts , and when he has started he has disappeared in second half , so impact sub for me or switch out after 60 mins

He's had an incredible impact off the bench but you've got to wonder whether we'd have gone behind in those games had we started with our best players. I don't particularly want us to be chasing games, I'd rather we take the lead and control them. Especially against teams like Rovers who've proven to be very handy at protecting a lead once in front.

Seems to only do it for 45 minutes if he starts. If he can get that to 90 he’ll be the best winger in this league.

I think right now, though, we’re better starting Tella who has a better press, while still not losing the directness / pace / goalscoring threat.

Impact sub for me. He really is a special player, but it is a big ask to impact a game like he does for 90 mins. I think we have more quality throughout than rovers. I would give JBG 55 mins to wear them down the right then unleash Benny to drive them into the dust. So inpactive from the bench.

Impact. If everyone is fit I’d go

Cork
Brownhill
Tella
Zaroury

If Jay isn't fit I think we'll go with Benson, Tella and Zaroury from the off.

Let their defenders pick up yellows trying to deal with Tella then bring on Benson to run riot.. there's no plan that can counter that

Assuming everyone is fit I would start with JBG who is enjoying his most consistent spell for some time and iantroduce Benson around 55/60 against tiring defenders

It is so refreshing to have game changing options from the bench

He'll receive some serious treatment early on, so sub when it's calmed down somewhat has merit.

Usually I’d say start, as he fully deserves it for his performances, but Rovers will be throwing in a few naughty ones early doors tomorrow I reckon, so I’m edging towards bench option for later in the game. Over the break, look to work a bit on his stamina and physicality (tbf it looks like good work has been done on this front already) and we’ll have an absolute beast of a player come the other side.

Can’t argue with that. They will kick him off the park if he starts

Made the argument a couple of weeks back, I'd rather have him coming off the bench if we needed a boost than Gudmonson, still an impact sub until we improve on the alternative unfortunately for him.

I can see both sides of the argument. But for me, I’d be starting our best 11, which includes Benson.

I'm glad Vk is the one who has to make that call because it is a difficult one. Heart says he should start due to his incredible form. Head says he should be an impact sub as his speed against tiring legs is an absolute game changer.

I think I fall on the impact sub side of the debate. Just, but it is a close one.

That’s a fair point.

Just checked Blackburn sit 13th in the league for yellow cards and reds. Burnley sit 18th.

Two teams that are pretty well behaved

Start. Rovers haven't lost this season when they've scored first, so we need to start on the front foot
