Is there a more boring and depressing....

Sight in football than watching Stones and Maguire playing about with the ball at the back?

Not necessarily saying that it's all their fault, but by god it sucks the life out of you.

Boring.

I hope no one is having a sly dig at Gareth Yesgate's tactics.
Don't forget he got us to a semi-final and final.
And lost.

It's what they're left with when they run out of the few ideas they went out on the pitch with.

Foden, Rice, Saka and Bellingham have to be the players to build the squad around. Kane too, whilst he's still scoring goals.
Young, exciting, forward thinking players.

None of which play at centre half :)

True, but Saka and Bellingham were shockingly bad tonight

Both should have been off at half time

Easy to blame Maguire and Stones, but where was the movement ahead of them.

Midfield dire tonight and ball retention was dreadful, little wonder we created little of note in an attacking sense.

Agree bar the odd few games it’s largely dreary watching England.

Both are form players and our biggest attacking threats. They shouldn’t have come off at all. The changes to make were Grealish, Foden and Trent for Sterling, Mount and Trippier, but the manager couldn’t see it unfortunately.

Stifled by depressing tactics.
Southgate liked that we built from the back.
Built what exactly?

Why anyone would say we should build a side around Declan Rice is beyond me. Ok against lesser opposition but as soon as the standard steps up the game passes him by. Not good enough.

I have to agree.

I still don't know what he does for England. Holding midfielder=No, box to box midfielder=No, skilful midfielder=No

Looking like he's busy and passing it to the centrehalves=Yes

Your posts on here for one but at least with the England team it is likely to improve

Maybe, but USA aren't an example of the 'standard stepping up'. He's already playing against Man City and Liverpool, and however good Arsenal and Spurs have been. I think Declan Rice is one of our best players, and if all the best english players were suddenly released on a free transfer I reckon he'd end up at a bigger club than Sterling or Saka or Mount or whatever. But being wrong doesn't bother me, thankfully.

I find Rice quite hard to watch at times. Can’t play on the half turn so he slows down the build up play so much. He’d be alright as a pure ball winner I think, but next to a ball playing midfielder who can do the linking of play, as the sole 6 he’s not got the attributes for it.

Kane doesn't look fit. The midfield 3 were woeful along with Trippier at full back. The only player who came out of the game with any creditability was McGuire

Southgate needs to come down the Turf and take some advice from Kompany in how to play possession football and control a game

Too poor from all the players beyond d the back four. None of them made eny effort off the ball. Mount? God give me strength. He's utter cat arse off the ball and did nothing on it tonight.

Get foswn grealish and Rashford at half time to try and push the back a bit more.

Kane? Hasn't played well for England for over 2 years

Thought England aquitted themselves with credit considering we were playing the USA .....a team we have yet to record a win against in any competition. If Soccer was the national game there instead of rounders then they would be a great threat in any competition.

By quite a margin.

As for those players being described in less than complementary terms, people should realise that such things are relative... Even Sterling and Mount looked world class compared to Aaron Ramsey in the morning's game

Thrash wales, we’ll be world beaters again. Plenty of top teams have had a bad game in their opening 1 or 2.
That said, no idea how mount gets in ahead of Foden, who for me walks into most teams in the world. To a lesser grealish for sterling.
Credit to USA though their press was excellent and though we were void of ideas and movement they did a good job pressuring the ball and cutting off gaps for runners

Quite surprised that Pickford ( under instruction) was simply old skool hoofing the goal kicks straight down the middle and as long as possible . Presume coaching staff thought a weakness was there in the USA defence .

We were certainly boring beyond belief and a poor but up for it USA nearly mugged us. We needed the draw and we’re through (baring miracles ) so all ok really.

Regardless of anything else, I've never seen Pickford kick it long as much as he did last night. To no effect.
