Typical tv has given up while the World Cup is on , any advice on the best brand ? Sony, Samsung ?

Samsung or LG - 55 inch or above. Not Sky Glass in my opinion , tvs not as good and it’s a good idea not fully developed yet.

If, as advertised, sky glass is internet only do you lose signal if your internet goes down?

I believe so.And there is no hard drive so you are also dependent on terrestrial channels not removing a series from its on demand list. In my opinion Sky Q is still the best option.

Depends how much you want to spend. I have a 40" Samsung that is very good and a cheaper 50" Hisense that does the job very well. The Hisense has free films on it and I think quite a few are decent ones.

From what I’ve heard so far I would stay away from Sky Glass
If your internet/Wi-Fi goes down then you’ll only get the Freeview channels if you have an aerial connected

My house is over 110 years old and I'd be concerned that the Sky Glass television would make it look dated.

If you have the brass, the top end sets are the Panasonic LZ200, Sony A95K, LG G2 or Philips 937. I’d personally go for the Sony or the Philips because I like the Android TV operating system and they display all the HDR video formats.

An absolute bargain at the moment is the Samsung S95B as well.

If you can find one you want in richer sounds or John Lewis - I highly recommend getting it from there. Their extended 5 year warranty was brilliant when our last tv went on us just after the 2 year mark…. Called them for a no hassle convo and they sent out someone to collect it to see if it could be fixed. It couldn’t so they refunded the amount we’d paid for the tv 2 years earlier.

I have a Philips 'The One' or Performance series, mid-range, their top thier being the OLED panels.
Good 4k picture, HDR where available. Android OS & Apps plus Ambilight which casts a glow of whatever colour is on that edge of the screen onto the wall.
It may sound gimmicky at first but it's really atmospheric, I've added some Philips Hue bulbs around the room too.

Lots of BF deals around but I'd check out the AO Outlet store on eBay. Got mine there at a significant saving, in perfect condition.

That’s the telly I had that died about 2 weeks out of its 2 year Phillips warranty

The most important factor is the distance to your screen tha you watch tv from, as this really dictates the maximum size of screen that’s suitable. Bigger doesnt always mean better.

Check the heat and look at the deals.

For what it's worth, I'd recommend a 65" with as many Hz as you can throw at it.

Forget Sky Glass it's LCD which is old technology. You can't record on it and it streams so relies on the broadband so if your broadband is slow or goes down you have no TV. If you have Sky stick with a Sky Q box.

OLED is the way to go and LG, Sony and Panasonic all mae good OLED TV's. Samsung were developing an alternative to OLED but even they've started making OLED TV's now. Not aure if Samsung OLED's are as good as the others but think they'll probably be on a par.

Just get an OLED from a well known manufacturer and get the best deal on offer for the size you want. I prsonally like Panasonic OLED but they aren't always the cheapest.

We have a 41" Samsung LED in the living room and a 32" Samsung LED in the kitchen ... more than big enough for our room sizes ...

LG OLED if your budget stretches.

Bought a 55 inch LG oled, 3 months ago, picture is amazing! Bought it from Martin Dawes online, who offer 5 year guarantee.

No one best brand but I personally believe the Samsung S95B OLED is the TV to beat right now.
If you use a lot of news channels or SSN I'd avoid an OLED though.

My mate bought a decent very expensive one and it's great, and then the novelty wears off and it becomes just a TV that cost a lot of money that shows the same stuff as the Tesco one.

Put me in the boring old fart bracket, I'm happy there..

Up to a point, but when you put them side by side you get what you pay for picture quality wise

I’ve just got a Sony XR65A84KU, excellent picture and sound, no sound bar is required.

I don't disagree, it just doesn't matter to me. Perfectly adequate HD will do. Although sound is noticeably unimpressive without the sound bar on my 5 year old+ supermarket offering... Maybe I'll bring the upgrade forward to 2030.

Just got the Samsung QE65QN95b QLED
Got it from Richer Sounds who are much better than the likes of John Lewis, Curry’s etc in terms of providing you technical advice and helping you choose a TV.
Comes with a free sound bar at the moment which is a great sound.

Also comes with the one box facility which is great for putting all your other devices through.

We used one of their approved installers and he was excellent. Did a brilliant job in putting the TV on the wall and setting it all up with the sound bar too. He was also telling me how bad Sky Glass was. Sounds like a bit of a disaster from Sky. He said it was launched way too early by Sky as the technology was not ready. Said that on the few he’s been asked to install they have all had issues and a lot of people are trying to return them which is an issue in itself with the way Sky are treating people.

My advice would be ring Richer Sounds with an idea of your budget, size of TV you want and the kind of things you want from your TV (gaming, streaming etc)
