Dean Marney

Post by No Ney Never » Tue Nov 29, 2022 6:37 pm

Popped up on my Facebook feed that he'd dropped into Gawthorpe for a visit, what a top player he was. Would have stayed up that season had he not got injured.

I hope he's doing better nowadays. A legend, who can forget that volley vs Man City.

He was a fantastic signing by Laws. Canvey's finest.

I saw that on FB too. Always good to see former players clearly showing a genuine fondness for the club.

A heart on his sleeve player if ever there was one. An excellent player for us.

Great signing one of the few decent things Laws did in his brief reign.

Impossible to say whether we'd have survived that season or not if Dean had been available for the run-in, but he'd have certainly given us a greater shot at staying up that's for sure.

If memory serves me right, we won on the last day of the season we went down under Laws, taking us to 18th place. In doing so we got an extra £500,000 from the TV money. That summer, we signed Marney for £500,000 so in my head I always thought we got him for free because of that 18th placed finish.

He was never flashy, rarely the best player on the pitch in any single game, just got on with his job. He was consistently very good for us and left a gaping hole when he was out of the team.

Seem to remember him scoring with a great shot when he was at Spurs. He was touted as a star of the future. Never quite reached the heights expected.

I remember that on match of the day he got two I think cracking goals. When we signed him I thought this lad could be a great attacking talent in this league going off that memory.
He turned out to be the polar opposite in terms of how he played but what a signing!

We beat Spurs 4-2, pretty sure that was the last game anyway.

Fan favourite, formed a formidable Championship partnership with Jones. Who was horribly underrated really.

His first two seasons were forgettable. I quipped to my brother than he certainly looked like a real athelete but perhaps he should swap football for atheletics.

When Dyche came in he was transformed. Suddenly there was real purpose to his play.

Marney was phenomenal for us and yes, no doubt we'd have survived in 2014/15 if he hadn't been injured. Great to see him back at Gawthorpe. He's a true Claret legend.

It wasn't Dyche that transformed him. It was playing with Jones instead of McCann who sadly was awful post injury.

One of the couple who agreed to a pay cut prior to the 2013/14 season and got his deserved reward in the end. Can't remember who the other was but I'm sure there was somebody else.

Was it Ross Wallace?

Yes, the loyalists were Marney and Wallace.

Chris McCann (Wigan), Martin Paterson (Huddersfield) and Lee Grant (Derby) all decided the grass would be greener elsewhere and missed out on taking part in our glorious promotion season.

Seem to remember Di Maria making his Man Utd debut at the Turf and Dean welcoming him with a typical tackle; lots of indignation from the Argentinian, who seemed like he couldn't wait to be substituted. Van Gaal obliged, eventually.

Course Di Maria has had a splendid career, but it wasn't in England and it certainly at the Turf that day. It looks like he much preferred the sunny days in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Qatar. I'm not too keen on fancy dans. I much prefer good honest, strong footballers and Dean Marney was one.

Yes, he recognized that McCann just wasn't up to any more, something I think every Burnley fan and their dog knew, but didn't want to accept.

If that's masterminding, then standards are pretty low imo.

To me, it was just a good partnership and understanding from two players who complimented each other. Much credit goes to Dyche for bringing Jones in, but you have to give most of the credit to Jones who immediately transformed Marney when he started playing for us.

Of course Jones gets credit, but again, Dyche identified and signed a player who complemented Marney.

To be fair to Pato, I think he left as Huddersfield promised to play him up front, unlike Dyche who had played him on the wing (or bench).

He then proceeded to score barely any goals.

According to that article, "Also out of contract in the summer are Alex MacDonald, Kevin Long and Jon Stewart, Michael Duff and Brian Jensen – the latter of which stages his latest testimonial event at Turf Moor tonight, as a number of the club’s promotion squad in 2009 are reunited."

Did Jensen ever have a testimonial?
