Re: January transfer window rumours.
Barnes' 'Indian Summer' of the last few months has been a real bonus, he didn't deserve to go out on a low. Cemented his legend status with that performance against our neighbours too.

Re: January transfer window rumours.
If Barnes goes now he will be remembered a hero of the remembrance day thrashing of the fatherless ones.
If he stays and plays in bit parts, he will be remembered has not quite being good enough at the end.
He will still get a medal if we win the league.

Re: January transfer window rumours.
I'm slightly surprised we're still going for Obafemi but pleased. Barnes is apparently on a hefty wage so if we did allow him to leave, we'd have a solid challenge between Foster, Obafemi and Jay for the one spot.

Re: January transfer window rumours.
Thinking about it, I wonder if we held off on Obafemi to bargain the price down for Foster? It would make sense from a negotiation standpoint.
Re: January transfer window rumours.
I assume if Barnes leaves now, he will receive a winners medal should we go on to win the title?

And what’s wrong with wanting a new job with better pay and at a better club? Judge him by the standards you’d judge yourself before criticising. You’d not change job for more money at a bigger company?
Many on here could remember this when players want away. They are professional footballers not slaves.

Agreed, far too many people focus on the money side of football and very quick to label players greedy yet half would probably sell their soul for an extra £50 a week themselves. Comes across as stinking of jealousy.

Re: January transfer window rumours.
I think Barnes has had the perfect swansong of a season, and if he does leave, then having your last two goals and one of your best performances to be against Bastards isn't a bad way to do it
I think if an offer comes in for a chance of regular first team football he will take it, and good luck to him if and when that happens

Re: January transfer window rumours.
I'd be very wary of letting Barnes go, personally.
If all continues to go lovely and smoothly, then I imagine we could do with out him between now and the end of the season. But if we have a little wobble - and we're due one at some point - then Barnes' know-how and experience and ability to give us a slightly different, more physical dimension, might well still come into his own.
And I sense he's a big influence off the pitch. You only have to look at the rapport he clearly has with Zaroury. If so, someone like Foster, coming to England and perhaps (I'm guessing) having scope to improve his link up game with his back to goal, use of his body, etc., will be able to learn an awful lot from Barnes on the training ground. If that's right, I'd not be in a hurry to get rid of that sort of influence.

Re: January transfer window rumours.
Agree with all that, but its up to Barnes, and he'd probably looking at being 4th or 5th choice, so I'd expect him to move because if he wants to keep playing, he needs to be playingclaretspice wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 9:21 amI'd be very wary of letting Barnes go, personally.

I agree with a lot of that but as I see it from the outside the talk is that he has not been playing/training to the same levels since our interest in the summer.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 9:12 amAgreed, far too many people focus on the money side of football and very quick to label players greedy yet half would probably sell their soul for an extra £50 a week themselves. If he was our player and that was thought to be the case I'm sure he'd got the same reaction on here.

£3 million has been mentioned quite a few times which does look like a potential bargain and relatively low risk. Greedy I know but if we can now just get that Bosnian chap.RVclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 9:39 amBX reporter Dan Black on twitter:

Re: January transfer window rumours.
Can see why some readers are getting sentimental about Barnes wanting to go, but sentiment can come at a cost and we are not cash rich. I for one have been pleasantly surprised to see Barnes come good since the Rovers game, having written him off over a year ago. However I suspect Obefomi is coming with a view of getting Ashley's wage off our expenditure, and from what I read AB will be one of the better paid. Its rare we carry more than two strikers on the bench and with Obefomi and Jay probably being our two strikers on the bench , it means we can let Ashley go on loan. I think if it was OUR money we would be doing the same

Ok then I can accept that it's a strange alternative to what I thought it meant by putting something to the test & then finding out if something is going to work & be successful.
Re: January transfer window rumours.
I’m not sure saving five months wages is going to make much difference to our finances.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 10:10 amCan see why some readers are getting sentimental about Barnes wanting to go, but sentiment can come at a cost and we are not cash rich. Re: January transfer window rumours.
I think a lot of it comes down to personal pride of clubs too, fans don't want to believe another club is worth leaving for regardless of the money involved. They'll always find negatives at the other club to try and beat the player with but like ppl say we'd all leave a company for extra moneyclaretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 9:12 amAgreed, far too many people focus on the money side of football and very quick to label players greedy yet half would probably sell their soul for an extra £50 a week themselves. Re: January transfer window rumours.
Maybe not, but the half million or slightly more that its likely to save might have justified the additional offer to get Obefomi. I believe the bid increased from £2.5m to £3m

Barnes has featured in all but 7 of our games this season, he'll 100% get a medal (should it come to it).

Re: January transfer window rumours.
Kompany wanted obafemi on the summer even after signing the lad from Brentford, which would have meant 4 strikers, so now Foster and obafemi with him going back to Brentford would leave 4 strikers, 2 of which are under 25 with potential sell on value, good business
Re: January transfer window rumours.
Actually, despite thinking his best days are behind him for Burnley, I do completely agree with both of these points. I love to be able to give him a sending off when we win the league too. Though, if his wages are as high as stated the club may want to get him off the books in Jan.claretspice wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 9:21 amI'd be very wary of letting Barnes go, personally.

I love the January transfer window.
Re: January transfer window rumours.
This is getting surreal. Good players arriving day after day.
One more centre mid is surely the only slot from an optimum squad.
Not only do we look like getting promoted… it looks like we will have a solid team for next season already at the club.

I’m adamant that Obafemi will play in the Brownhill role just behind Foster.

Re: January transfer window rumours.
As much as I'd love to sign Hadziahmetovic, I feel we've still got a really strong CM with all of Cork, Cullen, Brownhill, Bastien, CJ, JBG and Twine who can all play central. We do need cover for Cork/Cullen in that deeper role but wouldn't be worried if we left that until the summer personally.
Re: January transfer window rumours.
Obafemi is someone who plays on the shoulder making moves in behind. At Swansea he was the outright striker with Piroe and Paterson in the dual 10’s behind him.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 11:18 amI’m adamant that Obafemi will play in the Brownhill role just behind Foster.

Read the list of names again and ask yourself which are good enough for a 38 game PL season. Even Jack Cork, who has been outstanding this season might not cut it a year older. Brownhill would get my nod.whiffa wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 11:19 amAs much as I'd love to sign Hadziahmetovic, I feel we've still got a really strong CM with all of Cork, Cullen, Brownhill, Bastien, CJ, JBG and Twine who can all play central. He more than likely knows no more than anyone else
I would assume there are substantial bonuses based on our performance
Be nice to think there isn't a minimum fee release clause as well

Just to confirm the EFL medal rules:-
The League shall present to the Championship Club of each Division 23 souvenirs comprising 18 for the Players, one for the chief administrator/club secretary, one for the Manager, one for the Senior Therapist and two for staff other than Players. It shall be the responsibility of the Club to determine to which of its Players the souvenirs should be presented. Additional souvenirs may be presented with the consent of The League.
Guidance
To be eligible to receive a Championship, League One or Two winners medal, a player must have been named on the team sheet in at least 25% of the club’s league fixtures in that season. Any medals agreed over and above those detailed above will be at cost to the Club concerned
