We ordered a new suite on November 1st and was told it would be in the distribution centre on the 25th of November...nothing happened....got an email from them this morning and it went like this.....

Hello Stephen,Β
Β
I have taken the time to look in to your order and can see it was due in on the 25/11/2022 unfortunately our Uk suppliers are facing a shortage in interior foam which has resulted in a delay we are hoping to have your order in soon and will be in touch once it comes in to your local distribution centre.

Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous in your life?
πŸ˜‚
From Micro chips to interior foam it would be interesting to hear what other ridiculous excuses these people expect us to believe.

There will be a shortage of Turkey fat and Brussel Sprouts next.

Just heard on the radio it's because France gave got most of their nuclear power stations back on line which has prevented us having power cuts, to many pathetic politicians taking short term views and grovelling to protest groups such as the anti nuclear lobby.

Don’t get me started.

We ordered a new sofa about a year ago and from the initial β€œit’ll be delivered straight from our warehouse to you within 6 weeks” then took nearly 9 months and legal action to get anything sorted.

Now that China has given up on zero Covid once the population have some immunity by surviving Covid their economy will pick up and we will be accusing them of dumping foam on us.
Time for us to try and start making more of the basics here and getting white goods that can be easily repaired by UK employees rather than throwing them away and buying cheap new white goods. That would be a start
Meanwhile was are day 9 of no central heating as we await a part for our CH boiler. Racking up one hell of an electricity bill with electric heaters and house no warmer than 17C

Supply lines are not what they were since Covid and possibly the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine. But in fact foam you describe should be made near the source of the end user - in this case your supplier - as its just not worth transporting it from say China. Too bulky and too light to make it cost effective in 40' containers. You will have noticed the trucks that transport this kind of prooduct are very high to allow for more volume.

There are so many supply issues in this country currently.

The media seem to have learnt that reporting on it creates more problems.

What I will say is to expect more pressing issues over the next 3 months on a whole array of products.

Airships could the answer for foam transportation ... they could have solar panals across the envelope to charge the batteries for the electric motors ... making it very cheap to transport across the Globe ... Hence cheaper foam for everyone ... I do realise my plan won't help Steve at the moment ... but its a thought for the future πŸ™‚

Yes re-shoring is a popular notion with clueless politicians but its much easier said than done. Factories have disappeared and so has the know how to operate them. Textiles (foam is usually a non - woven product) I know has seen most of the basic UK production disappear for the cheaper mass produced products fro Asia.

Buy "Dualit" toaster or kettle. British made and almost anyone can make repairs. Last week the timer on my ten year old toaster went haywire. Ten minutes on "You-tube" and I'd identified the problem. Another five minutes on-line and I'd ordered a spare part. It arrived next day and it took me ten minutes to replace defective part. Toaster now as new :D

Airships run on Hydrogen could solve a great deal of our transport issues. No particular airfield required for take off and landing, thus avoiding the crowded roads and intermittent train services. But the foam still has to be made - somewhere.

It's not just any type of foam though, it has to be fire retardant, and no doubt a certain safety standard has to be met. If that's what's out of stock, you cannot just stick any old foam in

Poyurethane foam which is used in furniture manufacturing is produced from two main components:- toluene diisocyanate and polyol, both of which are petro-chemical based products. Given the world wide supply chain problems in the petro-chemical industry, polyurethane foam is suffering just like like other oil-based products. It is not just a UK problem, the rest of Europe and other regions are struggling to obtain supplies of TDI and polyol. Regarding the question of fire-retardency in foam, this is a UK issue and almost all of the foam manufactured in the last 25 years in the UK has been fire-retardent.
The question of transporting foam is the same the world over, basically you are shipping air. Foam consists small bubbles of air surrounded by polyurethane plastic: the transport cost per kilo are extremely high making it impossible to ship over long distances. Foam manufacturing plants tend to set up as close a possible to the customers manufacturing bases. When Eastern Europe opened up in the 90s I was responsible for setting up 5 major foam manufacturing plants in the region, 2 in Poland, one in Lithuania, one in Hungary and one in Romania. These were all extremely successful operations because we could just-in-time deliveries of a bulk product to localised customers. I still keep in touch and can assure you all the plants are currently struggling with raw material supplies.

Caligen Foam in Accy is specialised in the production of polyester foams, as opposed to polyether poyuretane foam, which are used in the furniture and bedding industries. Their polyester foams are used mainly for technical applications:- foam laminating to textiles for the automotive inustry, packaging etc, etc. Although I haven't been in touch with them for a long while, I can only assume they could have some problems in their raw material supplies.
