Forgotten and lesser known brilliant movies

Post by Spiral » Sun Dec 18, 2022 11:12 pm

Considered posting this to the Netflix recommendations thread, but honestly some of the recommendations on there are really terrible (sorry, it's not my fault half of you don't have taste!!!), so thought I'd keep that filth in its own pen and do a serious, proper movies thread for serious, proper film fans with serious, proper taste. :D

No, but seriously, merge this with the Netflix one if it's a problem.

Anyway, so I watched Tar the other day (watch it, it's incredible) and thought it was almost perfect, but it hasn't had a huge amount of marketing and it's not too well known, despite it being probably the best film to come out this year. It'll be totally forgotten about in five or ten years, and so I'm looking for films like that which are bloody amazing but have been forgotten about over the years. Everyone knows your Apocalypse Nows and your Godfathers and your Shawshanks etc so what about lesser remembered ones?

Great idea. There are a lot of naff recommendations on the other thread so this should be good. I’d never heard of Tar so that’s gone straight onto my list thanks. I love my films but there’s been a dearth of decent releases over the last few years so I generally go back and re-watch films that I’ve not seen in a while - it’s always good to stumble across a good one that I’ve forgotten.

I watched the Banshees of Inisherin last night, which doesn’t exactly fit the theme for this thread, but I would highly recommend.

Watched Banshees just this Friday! Really good. In Bruges is one of my favourites so I knew I was going to like it.

By no means am I saying these 2 are the best films ever made and they are not my favourite films either but think they fall into the category of the OP.
Peanut Butter Falcon
Honey Boy

Both starring Shia LaBeouf - the second one an autobiographical look at his own life as a famous child actor.
If you haven’t seen either give them a watch as they are not what you would expect.

Don't read a single thing about Tar, just go into it completely blind, I can't recommend doing so enough.

Amadeus is a film that is about two million times better than it had any right being, but nobody I know has seen it. That's the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Likewise, great chemistry between those two, and I’ve always really liked Colin Farrell. In fact off the back of that I’m currently watching Seven Psychopaths by the same director, which isn’t exactly in the brilliant category but a decent watch.

Recently also watched Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Lobster whilst waiting to get a decent copy of Banshees, then watched Dogtooth by the same director. I tend to end up going down a bit of a wormhole after watching something I enjoy.

I’ll also contribute Call Me by Your Name, maybe this is too mainstream but it just came to mind.

Really struggled with that to be honest. I think I wasn’t in the right mood to watch it when I did. I should watch again.

It's a wee bit camp and it's really, really long, but loved every minute of it. I was in a bit of a baroque-period mood/phase/obsession when I watched it years ago, which probably contributed to my enjoyment of it a bit.

 yeah guess I wasn’t in a baroque mood that night. I’m the same with certain foreign language films such as Korean, and even black and white films. I go through spells of being in the mood for them and then go months without considering them. During the first lockdown summer I remember watching pretty much the whole Woody Allen back catalogue!

Can relate. Sometimes I'm up for, like, late Soviet-era philosophical art films like Andrei Tarkovsky's stuff, then other times I'm like, I wanna' watch Troy.

I've got Mosfilm https://www.youtube.com/@Mosfilm_eng bookmarked because there's a few on there I'm interested in. Come and See is one I've heard about through some video essays but haven't got around to it yet. I'll get to it eventually though.

Belter of a film - Jack Lemmon was immense in it. I saw Christian Slater play Ricky Roma in the stage version in London about 5 years ago.

The Quick & the Dead (1995 - not the 1987 TV movie with the same name!)

A throw back to the old Western movies, this one involving a gunfighting competition with a twist..

Great story and a great cast including Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Leonardo di Caprio, Russell Crowe, Lance Henriksen and Keith David

I'll have to dig the DVD out over Xmas and watch it again, as you say, cracking film and definitely worth re- seeing.

Quite right Distortion. I must have seen both films because I placed Stone and Conti together in it… but I’m clearly remembering a montage of the story in my minds eye.

One of the grimmest war films in existence. Brilliant direction by Elem Klimov, but by heck, it's a dark and foreboding film. Don't watch it if you're not in a good place.

I recorded it the other week. I think it was on TP or some other free movie channel. I wouldn't have bothered if I hadn't recently seen a documentary about Tallulah Bankhead.
