First for me ..do not even know who the winner of the sports personality award is and what sport she did until I checked..

Anyway well done to her ....think female football must be the biggest growing sport ...think high time there should be double headers on the Turf with BFC ladies playing after the mens team ...

Like lots of other sports if the girls are given a platform they will provide good sport ...

Well done Beth .

We have double headers over here. Ladies play 2 hours before men’s game. Usually get there for second half and it’s ok to watch.

Its another reality TV show to me. In this era of CELEBRITY I suppose though it was good that somone I have never heard of - as I dont follow much football outside of BFC - won it. She must have been good to beat Ben Stokes to this award, whose been terrific.

Yeah, agree with that...

Won major tournament - tick
Won golden boot at major tournament - tick
Ballon d'Or runner-up - tick
Involved in promotion and development of her sport - tick
Won the public vote - tick

The whole event is a tick box exercise. That’s why no one’s interested in it.

Used to be a really good watch that you’d look forward to.

But for years it’s been absolutely meaningless tripe.

The panel that chose the final shortlist nominees was apparently Denise Lewis, Stephen Hendry and another woman I can’t remember.

At least that resulted in Ronnie O Sullivan being on short list which was deserved.

How on earth did Matt Fitzpatrick not make that short list ?
Tyson Fury too.

Beth Mead was a worthy nominee for sure.

For me the whole BBCs approach to sport and the demise of this show is summed up by Clare Balding !!

Bear with me on this !

Clare Balding has knowledge about one sport. Horse racing in her very privileged up bringing. When was the last time BBC even covered a single horse race ?
Yet Balding seems to pop up hosting every other sport - football, rugby league, tennis, swimming - everything. She gets paid a fortune for covering sports she has never played or had any involvement in whatsoever.
And of course she often fronts the sh-it show that is SPOTY.

Agree. Used to be the last Sunday before Christmas and I'd settle in and watch it without fail.

These days it seems to be more of a light entertainment show. I can take it or leave it and for obvious reasons didn't bother last night.

I guess I'm not the demographic they're looking for.

Weird one. I hadn't seen it advertised or promoted anywhere (I'm guessing it wa during WC games but I only really watched the games and not before/after/HT) which led me to check if it was actually happening this year.

I guess it was shunted to Wednesday because of the World Cup final.

No issue really with the winner, though one member of a team is usually a little harder to justify than someone from an individual sport (unless it's someone like Botham in 1981).

I've slightly more interest in golf than I have in women's football but I certainly know who Beth Mead is. Never heard of Matt Fitzpatrick until a couple of days ago when people started asking why he wasn't on the shortlist.

Another one who couldn't understand how Matt Fitzpatrick was not nominated??
First British winner of US Open since Justin Rose in 2013. Great achievement well worthy of winning SPOTY.

Congratulations to Beth Mead. Well deserved.

I didn’t watch it, but on my news feeds this morning, was the presentation of the Helen Rollason award to Rob Burrow. Incredibly emotional and moving.

Like many others i use to watch this every year. The last time i watched it was December 2018 when it covered sports stars who had passed away that year, to see our own legend Jimmy McIlroy MBE featured.

Your interest in golf must be pretty low if you have not heard of Matt Fitzpatrick tbf.
He’s the first English winner of a golf major since Danny Willet in 2016 and the first to win US Open for even longer.
He’s also won the European tour and been in a number of Ryder Cups and been in world top 10 - it was not a big surprise when he won US Open.

Up until the Euros I had never heard of Beth Mead. Not saying she is undeserving of a nominee but the likes of Fitzpatrick have done far more in their careers, far more this year and have a much wider global popularity (as golf also does compared to womens football)

My interest in golf is low! I only really take notice of the majors, must have just missed that this year.
My interest in women's football is even lower though but that's kind of the point. I'd also not heard of Beth Mead before the euros but practically everyone had heard of her after them.

I'm not arsed at all about who wins spoty but I think she's a worthy winner.

Never heard of this lady but well done, whoever she is. However, we all know deep down why she has won. While half the world revels about being 'woke', the other half is starting to get sick of the woke culture. I know which half I'm with.

The best part of the programme was around the incredible work Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield have done for the MND community.

I see Kevin Sinfield has followed Steve Borthwick into the England RU set up. Same job as at Leicester Tigers, Defence coach, hope he’s half as good as Sean Edwards has been in the same role but for Wales. Good luck to him.

There have been 11.5 previous female winners, the half being Jayne Torvill, was the world woke when these ladies won or were they just the most deserving winners, as Beth Mead is.

Like I said, congratulations to her, whoever she is. But I think women’s sport is boring. Most males don't pay the slightest attention to it. No one minds about the result. It seems to me it’s more a case of, ‘Well done for having a go.’
