Refs Mic’d up in the Championship

Anyone know who they are in contact with , as the ref last night gave a free kick to Brum based on what was fed back to him .

They’re fellow officials. It’s not just in the Championship, it’s across all leagues and even in non-league down to a certain level.

They should have to explain certain decisions either at half time or the end of the game.

Having watched an NFL and NHL game live this last week, I'm all for hearing why the ref gives a decision.
Nothing wrong with it and if anything it would probably benefit the sport.

What would you suggest ?

Have you witnessed the abuse they get at grassroots?
Even when I witness my 7-year old nephew playing and he is being refereed by 13/14 year olds,
the referee can receive dreadful abuse from parents.
Believe me, If you have ever tried it, it's not as easy as it appears.

No wonder it's difficult to recruit them and then progress them through the leagues.
They even attract these sorts of comments on message boards.

What would I suggest? No idea. It’s the same most games. I’m not suggesting it’s easy. It would just be nice if they actually watched the game. The standard is poor. Game after game.

We had this “issue” when Roberts was sent off. Ref hadn’t a clue, looked straight across to his linesman, who WASN’T flagging btw, then after what seemed an age, there was a pen and a sending off.

I maintain that decision was NOT taken on the field.

The referee and his assistant were just discussing it.

I don’t know how the discussion went, other than badly. But the lino obviously saw something to suggest that Roberts had handled the ball, but not enough to flag. It may be that the referee was also similarly unsure, and between themselves they agreed that it was a handball. I’m not sure why you think the decision would have been made off the field, and if so by who?

I think that because we had two officials on the pitch, and neither were sure of anything. And if the discussion went along the lines of “I think I saw something, but I’m not sure” “yeah me too, but I’m not sure either” then the decision should have been play on, goal kick.
Then after a discussion they were sure enough to give the pen and a sending off? I’m sure you can see my concern here.
The lino saw nothing, so didn’t flag. The ref saw nothing. There was a lengthy delay before a discussion between the two. The opposition players saw nothing and were getting on with it. Why on earth was there a need for a discussion?
It’s my belief the ref had someone in his ear, and advised a course of action. An unofficial VAR if you like.

I think at least we CAN agree on the whole episode being managed in a bizarre fashion, resulting in the two very wrong decisions.

I absolutely agree that the incident was dealt with in a bizarre fashion and most importantly incorrectly. But I’m pretty certain it was only the officials on the pitch involved in that decision. I don’t buy into there being an external official in every football league game feeding into the referee’s ear.

However, you clearly see this happening in the Premier League for incidents that aren’t officially being reviewed by VAR. On borderline red card challenges you will see the referee wait 5-10 seconds before presenting a card during which time he’s clearly being advised by the VAR.

Could have meant the 4th official. Can't see why they'd get involved with the lino so close by.

I’m pretty sure the VAR isn’t supposed to assist the referee in making their initial decision.
