What's your favourite Away Day?

Mine was November 1966. Division 1 game, Sunderland v Burnley at Roker Park.
I was 16 and got the Shara ( coach!) Pick up from Rawtenstall about 7am. Pick ups on the way, bad roads, no m'ways, arrived late, missed kick off by 15 mins. Was an avid collector of match day programs then

The best I’ve been to in my life time was probably Scunthorpe away 2000 as I was 11, and it just felt magic, had many great days since though that have run it close.

My favourite away days though are the Sheffield clubs or North East clubs as it’s s great day out going over on the train or having a weekend in the cities

Ooops... couldn't buy program as too late but a Sunderland fan next to me heard me asking where I could get a programme, he was about 18 and said...here have mine..if you travelled all this way for your team you deserve a programme. He pointedly refused any money for it. What a good lad. We lost 4-3 but what a game! As a result of that kindness, Sunderland have always been my second team.

Blackpool early 70s.

Ellen Smiths chara from Waterfoot.

A pint or 2 in that big pub on seafront with revolving door.. Join an absolute army of clarets marching down the prom around 230pm.
Take the ground over and watch us beat them on our way to promotion.
No idea of score but pretty sure Stevenson saved a pen.

Chelsea in the league cup.

Great trip, with great lads in a 7 seater with driver.
Tipsy by Brum after a few in spoons before pick up and a great result to boot.

Was it 7k flat caps in all the West London pubs that night?

Rotherham away 96/97 season. We got beat 1-0 but it was a great game and a fantastic day all round and one I'll never forget

Derby away, FA cup 3rd round which was in December 1999 for some reason. Brilliant atmosphere and an Andy Cooke winner in a game we dominated for the most part

Apologies I thought this was about Burnley away days. If I can count Leeds then I think it would have to be the 2001 Champions League Quarter Final away at Deportivo La Coruña. We lost 2-0 but were defending a magnificent 3-0 lead from the first leg at Elland Road.

For a small town Burnley are well supported but I feel sorry for you lot sometimes that you will never experience the level of support and atmosphere I was apart of that night in Spain.

Anyway I still enjoyed Rotherham away all the same

The FA cup replay at Derby in 1992 without a shadow of doubt for me. I was 13 and still remember it clearly to this day. Never known an atmosphere like it before or since!

It’s one of those games isn’t it. We took less than a thousand but everyone you speak to claims to have been there. Hope you were really there DA and aren’t just one of the ‘glory hunters’.

Leeds' first season down in the Championship, I want to say November 2004. We had a rubbish team out, I think 4-5-1 with the wingers being Lee Roche and Richard Duffy. Took pelters all day at school in Halifax about how they would thrash us, they scored after 12 seconds yet we went on to win 1-2 with Roche and Duffy both scoring. I believe we were so weak at the time that Amadou Sanokho got on the pitch.

Next day at school was superb.

I was definitely there although I didnt stay until the end as it was quite cold in that away end and we didnt look like getting an equaliser

Too many to count, used to travel with Colne clarets who used to pick me up at Knutsford services for southern games or I used to stay at my great friend Beaky’s house. So many scrapes & stories that still make me laugh! Stand out games are Plymouth in the play offs, Exeter the last away game before that where we all traveled in fancy dress, Fulham & the boozer just across the bridge, Mansfield away promotion year, Derby in the cup when we won 0-1 & Carlisle when loads of us stopped in Ambleside for the weekend & took on all the locals on at pub closing in a snow ball fight.

72-73 Champions last match at Nobenders.
BTW you had some opener at Sunderland. A 3-4 loss. One of twice I’ve seen us 1-3 up on Roker and lose. The previous season we won 0-4 with one of the clubs best ever performances.

Other than moment games (York, Scunthorpe etc) the one I enjoyed most was 3-2 away at Luton with John Spicer in goal and Ade playing like prime Drogba.

That game was crazy. It was like a cheese dream.

Aldershot, mid 80s, we won 2 - 0: I was there as a guest in the Aldershot Director's Box and their Chairman who wasn't best pleased when I cheered our first goal went ape-**** when I celebrated the second. A Security Guard was summoned and he and then a Policeman, escorted me from the box, down to the pitch side and then around to the away supporters end, this being where their Chairman deemed I 'would probably be more comfortable'.

A close second would have to be a game I attended between Athletico Madrid and Celta Vigo in the early/mid 1990s - we blagged free tickets to that game courtesy of the referee & linesmen who were in the same restaurant as us for lunch. While Burnley weren't actually playing in the game, they were playing someone (I forget who) at the same time, so being a tad ****** - it'd been a good lunch; the match officials had given us most of their complementary wine too - I decided it'd be a good idea to start chanting for Burnley and within ten minutes I had several hundred and perhaps even a couple of thousand Athletico fans joining in with me. We got back to our hotel about 10:00 the following morning, having spent the night at someone's house about 60 miles away.

Play off final 2009. When Mr Dean blew that final whistle it was a moment I had waited 33 years for more than half a lifetime.

I don’t buy into all this Championship is great stuff. The top flight is where Burnley should be. We shouldn’t accept second best.

Probably not one that will be mentioned, but the first game this season at Huddersfield has to be up there. We had just come down feeling deflated after a mind-numbing and fun starved season in the Prem, not really knowing what to expect, but wow...just wow (and it was a sign of things to come).

Spurs 83, what a night, Ossie Ardiles return to English football meant Spurs were going to Muller us, Big Billy put paid to that and I got 2 days off school, Mr. Mckeirnan not a happy bunny him being a Spurs fan and me missing 2 days (not just me must of been half of the school off)

Luton away in 2005. Ade scoring a hattrick and Beast getting sent off. Spicier going in the goal and us still pulling off a win. It helps that the away end is an absolute shed and allows a proper noise to be made. A lot of the aways during the Coyle promotion season were excellent.

Some great memories here. The standout more recent games - York, Scunthorpe, Reading, Chelsea etc etc are all magical - but the best ones for me are the far flung midweek games. Norwich, Swindon, Fulham (in torrential rain on an open terrace) etc etc - with Millwall the season we were banned from attending until very close to the date. Think 82 of us were there, but I’ll happily be corrected on that number.

Olympiaccos for me. I was very lucky as was already away in Greece when the draw was made after beating Istanbul Besakashir. To be fair it cost as much to fly all four of us to Athens and book a hotel for the night as it would travelling from England.

When we got to the hotel the chap handing the tickets out told us my youngest lad, was the youngest Claret there.

Although we got beat it was great to be there and see the boys back in Europe.
