Walking Football Walton-on-Thames
Hi, I joined a new walking football group, yesterday, run by Chelsea Community Foundation. Of course, I wore my new Burnley socks, with BFC initials. After the game one of the other players was trying to guess which club - we are down in south west London, eventually he guessed Burnley FC.
He then told me he played in another session at Walton-on-Thames (both Chelsea and Fulham run WF sessions there) and said there was a Burnley fan playing in the group there.
Does the Walton-on-Thames Burnley fan come on this mb? Be good to say "hi" sometime.

Re: Walking Football Walton-on-Thames
Glad to see you’ve taken up walking football. Burnley Clarets are flying the flag for the town in the Greater Manchester WF League, picking up two trophies in our first year in the league, but most of all thoroughly enjoying kicking a football during our advancing years.
We’re nothing to do with Burnley FC or FC in the Community, but almost all are Clarets fans

I used to live in Walton on Thames (from 2010 until I moved away in 2020) but can't say I knew of any other Burnley supporters.

I play WF in the Algarve @ Vilamoura. I’m the only Claret but there’s a mixed bag of uk teams represented. We host a couple of competitions each year and they are well attended by uk teams. If anyone is in the area come and join us. We play Tuesday and Thursdays. Browns ( BWFC) on Facebook or Google.

Re: Walking Football Walton-on-Thames
Hi Pete, thanks, yes, exciting times for me. Last time I played 5-a-side at Kingsmeadow, Kingston - almost 7 years ago, now - I had a heart attack. It's taken some time, more than 5 years putting on a kit. It's good to be back. More recently, Kingsmeadow has become the home ground of Chelsea Women.
One of the guys I was chatting with after, in his 70s, told me that he'd lost the sight in one eye through high blood pressure. He's still playing walking football - but only on one side of the pitch. He's also a regular tennis player, saying most shots and returns are from memory.
The guy who was awarded man-of-match had knee replacement surgery last summer.

So he remembers when he used to be able to return a serve when the ball flies past him?Paul Waine wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 11:30 amHe's also a regular tennis player, saying most shots and returns are from memory.

That's what he tells me... or, perhaps he meant that if he watches his opponent serve, based on the movement of his opponent's arm and the swing of his racket he can make a good attempt at hitting the tennis ball back.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 12:47 pmSo he remembers when he used to be able to return a serve when the ball flies past him?
As for walking football, before I knew he'd only got sight in one eye I was puzzling why he never tried to play the ball on his other side.
It's great what people will 'put up with' to play the beautiful game. I hope I'm still playing when I reach his age.

Re: Walking Football Walton-on-Thames
I've only just joined up with this group, Chelsea run teams across a number of locations. I've played in a couple of walking football "festivals" - means medals for all, no winners or losers - organised by Chelsea and Fulham, respectively, June and Sept last year. The Fulham one was mixed, 5 males and 2 females on each team, randomly put together by Fulham.
We are putting together a multi-age team (1 x 70+, 3 x 60+ 6-a-side) to play in Surrey WF League this year. Waiting for details at moment. I understand games are played at Dorking (Thursdays) and Walton (Tuesdays) in alternate months.
I'll post again on here when I learn more.
Yes, be great to meet up.
