Accrington Stanley beat Lincoln on penalties this evening to reach the semi finals of the EFL Trophy, just one win away from Wembley for the first time in their history.

My first trip to Wembley was in this competition back in the 80's when it was called something stupid like the Milk Cup. Not sure how many people remember it by but despite losing 2-0 to Wolves and being outnumbered by about 3 to 1 by their fans it was a brilliant day.

Good luck to Accrington Stanley and hope some of their young fans get a debut trip to Wembley just like I did back in '87

Leyland Daf trophy I think it was in those days
My second trip to see us lose at Wembley only corrected when we beat Sheff Utd
Missed the Stockport Co. play off final as was away in business.

It was called the Sherpa Van Trophy when Burnley went. Wolves had 48,000 of the crowd according to their paper, though I’m sure there’ll have also been a few thousand sponsors and player and staff comp tickets.

Nearly got to Wembley in Milk cup - but beaten by Liverpool in 2 leg semi final.

Wolves = Sherpa Van.

Hope Accy reach the final

You must be getting mixed up as it was a competition for lower league teams only. We got beat off Stockport in the Northern Semi Final one year but sure that was only one leg. Either way you're obviously a little confused

Wasn’t the Milk Cup so called because that season it was sponsored by The Milk Marketing Board, also The Rumbelows Cup. My memory must be playing tricks on me as I thought they were all versions of The League Cup.

They were - your memory is not playing tricks on you.

Zenith Data trophy was one of the many names given to the lower league competition where we reached the final v Wolves when it was the Sherpa Van.

Sherpa Van Trophy final, May 1988 Wolves v Burnley. I'd moved down to London a little before this. It was good to see Burnley play at Wembley, the first game I'd got to since moving down here.

UTC

PS: I hope Accrington Stanley get to their Wembley final. That will be another good afternoon out.

The Zenith Data was for div 1 and div 2 teams when English clubs were banned from Europe

Sherpa Van was for div 3 and div 4. Since called LDV, Autoglass ans EFL cup

At least we know when he is talking about Leeds he’s just taking the p-iss and he really hates them just as much as every other football fan in the country.

Yes that Sherratt Van was the record attendance for 2 Division 4 sides at Wembley....by a mile.
Something like 84000 comes to mind. I think Burnley had well over 30k and nearer 40k. Not sure of the precision.

The pre match old former players was great, with Peter Noble playing like his life depended on it.

Wasn't there more at Wembley for that final between 2 Div four clubs that at Wembley for an England International a few weeks before 🤔

Is that correct ?
Wow - did not realise that. Apologies.
Was the Simod cup the same thing ?

I cannot remember any of the top sides at the time like Liverpool ever winning Zenith Data. Did some of them not enter ? Or was it an optional thing ?
Also did the League Cup also take place too ? I can’t remember that ever stopping.

Yes Simon Cup was a special short term Cup.

It was the last 80,000+ football crowd in England until the new Wembley was opened in 2007 as attendance restrictions were brought in following Hillsborough.

Chris Wood(s)

England goalkeeper, normally second behind Shilton.

Played notably for rangers and one season with us under waddle. Never truly in his comfort zone with us.

Didn’t the club get given / win (not sure what for) a couple of Leyland DAF vans from one of the EFL cup sponsors, back in the day? I assume it was from Leyland sponsoring it - I’m sure I recall an article from a programme back in the day.

Accrington Stanley who are they?

Well Wembley might be about to find out.

Staggering they've never appeared at Wembley throughout their long history, can't be many clubs who have never played at Wembley with all the play-off's and various cups.

That was the only game my mum ever went to with me and dad. She was fuming after it because of the on field violence of the Liverpool team. Memory may he fading but Case and Souness were the main culprits. It took her days to calm down.

We won a Sherpa van that day. It was often parked under the Bob Lord terracing. It looked very posh, white with Claret and Blue trim and obviously Burnley FC on the sides. Think it was used to ferry players/staff back and forth to Gawthorpe.

Wade Elliott’s Chelmsford are also semi finalists.

Bobby Thomas though will miss out on a trip to Wembley as the Gas were knocked out 2 - 0 at home by Plymouth. He got booked as well.

Bolton are the other semi finalist.

Each club received a Sherpa Van in the clubs livery. We used to park ours under the Bob Lord stand, basically where the business hub is now near to the club shop, but inside the ground.

They used to use it for years to ferry the players to and from Gawthorpe.

We've only played them once competitively and that was when they beat us 1 nil in league cup 2016, and we're only 5 minutes away!

Wow, it makes me feel old seeing how hazy and distant everyone’s memory of that day in ‘88 is. I remember it like it was yesterday, and can still name the Burnley line up.
I did however, convert the original vhs video of it to dvd and revisit it from time to time.

I think, from memory, that there are only two league clubs that have never played at either the old or the new Wembley. Accrington Stanley being one of them, who is the other?

(Warning - I heard this question a year or two ago and might be misremembering. But I think I'm right.)

Accy and Rovers are two of about five or six who've never played at the new Wembley. Newcastle would be another but they played against Spurs when Spurs were using it for home games.
