Before today's games we were 14 points clear of Rovers in third. We're now 16 points clear.
Immense.

My only surprise would be if they actually made the play offs.

I'm certain they will. Finally starting to get the results their performances deserve and Middlesbrough, West Brom, Watford and Norwich all finding form after poor starts from the lot of them.

A good place to be in for sure, however West Brom will provide a stern test on Friday.
Apart from the top 2 a cigarette paper separates the rest of the division who are all capable of beating each other on any given day.
We just need to keep churning out the results and we'll be promoted no matter what others do.

Table starting to take shape now.
Replace Rovers with Norwich and I think that's the season sorted.

Has there been a time when the automatic promotion places have been decided this early?

In the Championship? Mathematically I don't think so. I read recently that only 1 team has had more points than what we have at this stage of the season.

We're 16 points clear of Watford in third. They have a GD of 5 whilst ours is 28.
That means that effectively they (or whoever is in third) need to make up SIX wins while we would have to lose six.
Aint gonna happen.
Relax.

Big big test next Friday. WBA on a great run like us and we'll be without Corky. We'll need to be well up for it. Cos West Brom will be, you can be sure of that.
Bring it on.

They’ve got a game on Tuesday which will hopefully work in our favour.

Mind the gap
There are still 19 games and 57 points left to play for in the Championship, but the automatic promotion race is looking increasingly like a closed shop.

I think I phrased the original post incorrectly. What I meant is we were 14 points clear of the team currently in 3rd place. And we're now 16 points clear of the team in 3rd place.

Id not realised that . Yeah fingers crossed . A late late winner , 6th minute of extra time would make amends for conceding so late at the hawthorns would do nicely.

That really is impressive as you kinda just forget about it due to the points. A GD of 28 with Watford a GD of 5.
Bloody mad.

The Coventry lads put up a good show but were blowing out their arse's by 70 minutes, they literally didn't have anything to bring on that would make a difference (like us under Dyche), so didn't. We did and those subs made the difference.
It's not just that we're really good, it's compounded with the fact that everyone else's...isn't.
The perfect storm.

It was really weird today. I felt myself down for thinking we might “only” get a draw. This keep winning thing means we need to keep telling ourselves it’s ok if we don’t

We will lose another at some point, but these lads will just shrug it off, get on with it and probably produce another run like we’ve been on since Sheff Utd away. Loving it at the minute, great to see. UTC.

I posted on one of their forums that I thought they’d do well to finish within 30 points of us.
They took umbrage at that and called me arrogant. I absolutely stand by it, I think we’ll possibly go over 100 points.

The six big favourites at the start of the season are now looking like being the top six.
I reckon only 7 more wins will be needed to be promoted though (86 pts, with a few draws too, 7-6-6 from 19 games) so I'm not looking over my shoulder. The title will need more of course.

Probably need another 5 wins to guarantee a playoff first. Incredible really considering we are only mid January

If we get to the fa cup semi final it's played on the weekend we play B@stards away, this then could put our game against them to midweek around the the middle of April, it would be beautiful to win promotion on their ground

Sheff Utd are beginning to get annoying. They just won’t go away will they? They are like wasps at a picnic. Still, I do quite like them and I hope they go up with us (but obviously not as champions).

I say on the latest lanclasico pod that Rovers will finish twelfth. A little tongue in cheek but I think they'll do well to finish top ten.

It's the quarter finals the weekend of 18th March when we play them, if we beat Ipswich and they win against Forest Green/Birmingham it means only one of us have to win in the next round for the game to be moved.
Looking at the teams left I'd say theres a good chance one of us could make it to the quarters.

Imagine how they feel about us. After the Bramhall Lane debacle, they probably thought they'd have easily passed us by now. I sort of felt the same walking back to the car.

I think that this is a mutual feeling that the Sheff U fans also have towards Burnley. Seen a few times on their forum their incredulity that no matter how many they win, the gap doesn't seem to get any smaller.

Will be interesting to see how the current points total for the team in third compares to last few seasons as that's the only figure that really matters.

I think after 27 games last season, 3rd place had 6 points more than the team in 3rd this season.

It’s a good thing. Keeps us honest. Sometimes if you’re just up there in your own and a bit of complacency can set in.

Two seasons ago it was ten points more.
Also in the last two seasons at least every team in the play-offs had more points than Watford currently have in 3rd after 27 matches.
So it's highly likely that we won't need the same number of points to get promoted. Possibly no more than 88-89 at the most.

So realistically we'd be looking at 8-9 wins plus a few draws to go up.

I cannot see VK allowing complacency to set in ... He is continuing the "one game at a time" mantra that served us so well in the past.

As I can't edit, the figures are based on the best case scenario for another side going on a fantastic run.
When we last went up we'd got 51 points out of the last 22 matches. That's 2.32 pts per game or 106 points over the season. If Watford were to replicate that form for here it would leave them on 87.
Likewise WBA on 85.
