Price of a pint of beer

A pal of mine has just returned from a visit to London. He told me he went in a small sort of regular boozer for a pint and the price for that pint of regular beer was £6.80. Lager was £7.60. We all have a choice not to buy any beer of course. Inflation in London must be about 60%. My local, after a recent price increase, charges £3.40 / pint of bitter.

On a much lesser scale, central Leeds I am not often getting change from £6 in the larger venues.
Always a treat at home games with the pints in and around Burnley. The little street where Circ Retro and other small venues are is about half the price !
In fact, the highest I have paid in Burnley remains lower than Leeds (and that was pint of Belgian ale from the Bier Huis!)

That London price seems excessive, but prices in Manchester city center are similar to London nowadays.

Chester city centre boozers are charging around the 5 pound mark for a pint of decent real ale. The price has shot up recently but the the best cure for high prices, are high prices because people will not buy the product and the company will either go out of business or reduce their prices. I personally will not pay a fiver for a pint of real ale. I drink at the golf club where I get a decent pint of Weetwoods Cheshire Cat for 3.50.

Down here in the millionaire infested southwest beer prices vary from £3.50 to about £10.00

You’ll pay over £4-5 for a premium lager in any brewery owed pub these days around Burnley.

Early 1960s when I started drinking in Littleborough, mild was 1s 3d a pint, bitter 1s 6d.

£6 in my local (W Sussex) and has been for sometime. £7.60 in London sounds about average, paid £9 before. It is ridiculous.

When I first started drinking the old chaps used to say that if beer ever went to a pound a pint they would give up, sadly due to the price nowadays most of the boozers I went in are the things that have given up!
Districts that were full of pubs and busy most nights now haven't a pup left.

Yes its true. I read that three more E Lancs pubs are to close, including the White Bear at Barrowford. Crawshawbooth has more pubs than Rawtenstall

Bought 2 pints of Guinness in the Longside hospitality lounge on Saturday. £13. It was bobbins too.
On the plus side, the lad only charged me £2.50 for a double Bene, so swings and roundabouts.

Lifestyles change and have been doing so since year dot. 120 years ago, in some areas, there would have been a pub on every corner. Also, the days when everyone finished work at the same time and went for a jar are long gone. Hopefully, welcoming well-run pubs, that aren't full of drunken or coked-up dregs, will long continue.

I had a very nice local that’s gone bust. Went to the next nearest not so long ago and the person I was with couldn’t believe the price and said he could buy a huge case of cans for the price of 2 beers. The price disparity is huge. I’ve drastically reduced drinking in pubs and rarely eat in them unless there is a deal on. Might as well invite someone round and have a beer by the fire at home. At £6/7 a pint I’d prefer to buy a bottle of beer for home and give the difference to charity.

It’s interesting that in Clitheroe, whilst old crap pubs have been closing plenty of new more interesting places have opened and it’s a much better night out than it was 5 years ago.

I like going to the pub for the social aspect though. Never really been bothered about drinking at home.

Surely the White Bear is the 'go to' pub in Barrowford! What a disaster for the village.
My son lives in Greenwich, works in central London...the cheapest pint is around £6.50
London has much higher overheads than the North so it's inevitable that related costs will find their way into the cost of a pint of beer.

As a brewery we currently sell a 72 pint cask of 3.6% Pale Ale for around £85 plus VAT, which used to give us about £20 profit. So your pubs are buying for roughly £1.42 per pint. This obviously varies on type of beer, strength etc. as this might mean more duty is paid. Any bar charging you £6 is therefore marking up the price by well over 400%.
On the other hand, any pub selling for 99p must be buying the beer very cheap or losing money on it, so you have to ask why.
In summary, go to good old honest brewery taprooms while there still are some!

To be fair presumably they aren’t making that in profit though are they. Very significantly less if at all after paying for overheads: staff, rent, taxes, energy, sky, etc etc?

It's all about maximizing profits there's always somebody else willing to go in & try to make a do of it, the system & price points need capping at a certain level with committal to keeping it fixed in place, i pay around £3:20 at top club for a Joseph holt trailblazer stout & today £2:30 for a John smiths at big window going out of the area I know you are nearing £4 at a rural pub.

I was passing through & apart from guinness I couldn't see anything else on the ale line. To be honest the locals seemed friendly but the selection ale wise was poor I won't be rushing back to return.

Oh yeah absolutely. Sadly a huge chunk will go in all those things which means they can't be re-invested in the industry.

What really annoys me more than anything is pubs charging the same for a blackcurrant soda as they do for a coke!

Took my son out in Clitheroe and paid over £6 for a craft ale at a pub . My son told me it was dearer than at his local in Chelsea. He reckons he can get a good pint there for £6

I suppose this depends on how, and how much, you drink.
We sometimes go out for 1 pint, if it's a 9% posh beer at £9 that's fine with me.

Aye, had a similar discussion before Christmas on here. Local bar near me had an imperial stout on. Was £6 for a third, but it was absolutely superb, and you'd never drink a pint of it.

Why would that be? I don’t live in a city centre and I can’t get a pint for £5 in my local pubs, admittedly I’ve not enquired about the price of a pint of Fosters. I like to drink nice beer in nice places, amongst nice people, and you tend to pay a premium for that.
