What a tackle that was in the last couple of minutes. You won’t see a finer example of taking one for the team, even Jed Wallace appreciated it.UTC

Good tactical foul. Cork said before the game that this is something VK encourages.

So would you rather he just let them break? It’s a tactical foul. If it was the other end of the field WBA would have done the same.

Something we have been guilty of not doing enough in the last few seasons when teams are breaking, all part of the game trev.

Yes. I’m a sportsman. There is nothing to say he would have scored.

His quality going forward has been plain to see but over the last few weeks he’s defending has really come on. Great player.

It was a good foul, and will be appreciated by his fellow players.
It’s sportsmanship, it’s part of every game. Maybe not the level you play at, but Ian will have had a pay on the back from his boss last night.

Man City are the absolute masters of the tactical foul. They would’ve done it 10 yards earlier.

Absolutely the best tackle of the night. Cynical and worthy of a caution but totally the right decision with it being the 95th minute and even the WBA player accepted the tackle on him. Well done Ian

Trev, I genuinely applaud your sentiments but I have to admit I jumped up and applauded the foul like I might have done for a third goal. Yes they might not have scored but Ian removed all doubt. The players have to trust the VK process and the fans also. I still agree with your sentiment to a point. However my desire to see Burnley win allows me to accept that the referee will take any necessary decisions concerning fouls, so I really appreciated the moment. We also have to contend with teams trying to prevent us winning games with similar moments. Try not to take one moment out of context, look at the game and the season as a whole.

It's cheating, the game is absolutely rife with it.
Maybe in the recent past we didn't do enough of it.

Not cheating, gamesmanship.
I hate cheating, but there's nothing wrong with that, Maatsen took one for the team.

It's just trying to see the game out.
Like running the ball into the corner.
Not cheating, as has been said, it's gamesmanship

Far too often under Dyche teams would just run the full length of the field unchallenged (Son for example). What Maatsen did was streetwise. Bravo that man.

I mean technically it is cheating, but tactical fouls are an accepted part of the game hence just a yellow card punishment.

Always wondered why we never did the tactical foul thing under SD as much.
Wonder if it was because we didn't have as many suspensions and red cards (over 100 matches) as other teams we were able to play our strongest side nearly every match.

It was quite something to see Song score that goal agianst us at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, but I had the feeling with any other prem team he would have been legged between the half way line and Pope's penalty area.

Keeper knowingly sets up with no intention of passing it and wastes 45 seconds before he kicks long.
Full back takes a throw in 10 yes 10 yards further forward than the correct position
Defender stands on the ball after a free kick is given to stop a quick play
etc etc
Fouls have sanctions, some fouls are gamesmanship, some are annoying, some are clever. It was a great yellow card Maatsen took. Every game has some form of gamesmanship.

you do realise a foul isn't cheating right ? You do realise there are specific punishments in place for when a player commits a foul right ? You do realise Maatsen got the appropriate punishment ? ffs

To be fair an intentional tactical foul is cheating.

it wasn't punished because it wasn't seen - he cheated. I can't be arsed arguing about it

I saw stats last season that the top teams do far more “tactical” fouls than those lower down the table , hence part of the reason they are higher up. I just wish someone had done this to song at spurs rather than let him go on to score goal of the season

But the correct punishment for both Maatsen’s foul and Henry’s handball is a yellow card. A deliberate foul and deliberate handball are both forms of cheating.
The dictionary definition of cheating is
’act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage.’
I’m glad Maatsen did it, there are many forms of cheating which are deemed as an acceptable part of the game, and tactical fouls are just one of those.

Pep Guardiola loves a tactical foul - I was astonished how often City did it - and VK will no doubt be singing from the same hymn sheet. It’s all part of the game.

I opened this thread in the expectation that it was praising Maatsen for his general performance last night. I thought he was awesome and scored him a 9 in the player ratings. I had some reservations about his defending earlier in the season because of how gung-ho he seemed due to how advanced his positioning was. However, his athleticism allows him to be so advanced. He is so good at getting back to challenge, even if the attacker looks to go past him. He looks physically stronger game on game.
He took so much responsibility last night - he was always available, just like the excellent Cullen. I think he is a big part of why we are so strong the longer the games go. He turns the screw in terms of line splitting passes as the spaces increase through the opposition's fatigue.
I keep changing my mind in terms of which loanee is the most important for us but, for now at least, it is Maatsen.

Agree with everything you've said here aside from that he's our most important loanee. Personally, if we could only sign one of our current loanees; Beyer would top my list with Maatsen and THB following up.
