No goals in two games while Haaland is averaging 62 minutes a goal. Levels to it in Manchester.

Re: United
He has played well, especially today. Surprised some fans don’t seem to understand how there is more to a striker than scoring goals in modern football.

as we saw, strikers tend not to score unless they get service. The only ones that do are the pacey ones

He’s levels above any striker so it’s a bit harsh to measure Weghorst against him. United could have signed the second best striker in the world and the stats wouldn’t look any less one sided.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 6:32 pmNo goals in two games while Haaland is averaging 62 minutes a goal. They’re bang average considering they’re currently third in the Premier League.
Ten Haag is as defensive as Mourinho was and I’m not convinced he’s the answer for them.

Had an okay game today, some lovely touches, a lot better than 90m man Antony and McTominey, who was woeful.

I've always rated strikers by the number of goals they score. The better ones score more than the average ones and the best ones score more than both of them. A long list of such players is a available for anyone to research and browse through.

The two wide lads don’t pass the ball. They will always shoot, not set Weggy up.

Re: United
They also hold the ball up well, bring other attacking players into the play and link up the transition from defence to attack. All of which Weghorst did well today. Doesn’t mean he played badly because he didn’t score though. The fact you don’t rate him because he doesn’t compare to the best of the best is strange as if he was he wouldn’t be anywhere near a transfer target for us.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 6:46 pmI've always rated strikers by the number of goals they score. Re: United
Let’s be honest Weghorst is better than Wood
Re: United
A striker obviously has roles beyond scoring, but he doesn't seem to do even a lot of that at PL level. Not a target man, so don't expect him to hold the line. Okay, fine, he'll come deep and receive the ball. But then the opposition can move their defensive line up the field, and UTD (and us when he was here) lose team shape depth and this crowds the middle of the pitch making games a midfield battle, because you're basically playing 4-6 at that point, so if you don't win that battle you don't win the game, but hey, he'll create space for runners by dropping deep, right? Fair point, but if you want a deeper set No.10 then why not just sign a No.10 who does that job well instead of signing a No.9 to to play that role in a very mediocre way?
If the highest praise you can give to a player is that they do a job outside their primary role to a reasonably competent degree, it says a lot about how well they do their primary role as a player that you struggle to find moments of them doing it well worthy of highlight and praise.

Re: United
Just as we have had to get used to a different type of keeper, we are also going to have to get used to a different type of number 9, or false 9. VK I think prefers footballers who can do a bit of everything and he’s not bothered who scores the goals. Haaland is going to break all kinds of scoring records, but is he going to make Man City a better team.

Looked to offer about as much as he offered us. Some nice touches, bit of movement and a few short passes. Not sure he’s good enough for Man Utd or the PL.

Re: United
Wout holds the ball up well, has some nice touches (a couple of really good ones today) but his pace just isn't enough for a top side
Perfectly good premier league player though, but as a hard working, link striker rather than someone who will bang in goals
Put it one way, he's not the reason United have stuttered last couple of games

I’m just not sure what he is. He’s not a holding midfielder as he’s always getting booked for hauling guys down as they run past him, he’s not a ball carrier, he’s not a late into the box goal scorer. He’s just meh for me.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 8:03 pmI think bottom 6 is a bit harsh. He’s a bit like Perriera. Not good enough for United but there is quality there. I thought Ten Hag was aware if something in Wout’s game that would benefit United. Obviously being aware of him with the Dutch connection. Buggered if I can see it.

Come to think of it I can't remember him shooting. Like, I can't remember what it looks like. Genuinely. I know what Jay looks like shooting, his body shape etc with the low backlift, I know Barnes — he just smashes it with all his power, I know what Wood looked like shooting, I remember Gray striking the ball, Ings, but I'm genuinely struggling to remember what Weghorst, a striker, looks like striking a ball.
Re: United
He played 1,457 minutes for us. In total that's over 24 hours he played for us (24h 16m), an entire day of my life I won't get back where I watched Weghorst run around for Burnley, and for the life of me I genuinely can't describe how he strikes a ball. Baffling.

Re: United
Never said he.played badly. Never said I don't rate him. Don't know where that came from. Anyway, strikers score goals. Their goals win games. Sometimes people/ pundits might like to dissect their game to highlight what they don't do. Ultimately successful sides have players that put the ball in the back of the opposition net to win games. Goalscorers are renowned, the best of them over generations. I appreciate the part other players contribute to a football team but goalscorers are like gold dust to the success of any football team at any level in the game.Foshiznik wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 6:50 pmThey also hold the ball up well, bring other attacking players into the play and link up the transition from defence to attack. You are wrong.
In our current way of playing, he'd get more chances and convert more...
He also makes great runs dragging op' players all over.
He'd also be a huge help when we defend corners etc. - our main weakness right now.

I'm not convinced that he'd have 'double figures' by now and I would happily see him moved on in the summer for a reasonable price, but dependent upon salary cost, I'd rather we kept him in our squad than let him go for <£8 or 9 million.HunterST_BFC wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 8:48 pmHe'd have easily scored double figures by now in our team.

Re: United
You’d expect him to score a few if starting regular with some of the talent in that Man Utd team . Though he looks a bit at odds the way Man Utd play . He reminds me of the way we play Jay Rod now , deep with touches ,lay offs etc but few classic centre forward chances .
