Cannon balls were made of iron and the classic brass monkey was made of brass, an alloy with a much-greater thermal expansion than iron. As the temperature drops, the brass monkey contracts more than the iron balls. When the drop is enough the balls will fall off and roll around.

Hence the term "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey"

That can’t be true because the planet earth is situated within a galaxy and therefore so are all the earth’s grains of sand. Grains of sand are natural objects so at the very least the total number of natural objects in the galaxies includes all the grains of sand
