I was having a conversation with a utd fan recently and John Connelly came into the conversation. He could remember a song at utd, “John Connelly, John Connelly, the winger to watch” based on a tv advert “John Collier, John Collier, the window to watch”. John Collier was a tailors, like Burtons.
Now although I can remember the original advert, I’m not sure whether we sang the song at Burnley. I think we did, but hopefully someone on here will confirm it.

Aye, we originated the chant long before he left for Man Utd in '64. Probably around '60/'61.

We definitely sang it at Turf Moor.

Don’t think the singing and chanting came in until after JC had left.
Willie Morgan and Willie Irvine were the first two I can recall.

It came in long before that.

Singing wasn't invented until 1953 but it was banned at football matches until the repeal act of 1962 came in.

Me and my eight year old were doing that in the mirrors at clothes shops yesterday as we waited for my wife to ‘have a quick look round’. It’s a classic!

Used to do that as a kid but grew out it. Now I’m 70 and entering my second childhood it’s probably time to give it another go

When i saw this i had to play it, in the 70s i rember the advert and that on a holiday in devon my father had been in the sea near a sewage outletand was quite ill, one oth things that happened was he was delirious for several hrs shouting out hold me down hold me down, when he was better Mum asked him what he could remember and stupidly he replied hot air ballon , mum went ballastic accusing him of fanatasing about the young woman on the advert. for several years if i wanted to get him in trouble all i had to do was sing out the line ''she flies like a bird'' and mum gave him crap all over again.

In the early 70's he was at Bury and the song for him went....."John Connelly,Butter and Jelly la lala la la"

What a coincidence. Just found this on Facebook from A Swedish follower. Reportedly as being from the Burnley Express in 1952. His query was regarding the first use of Up The Clarets.

But, just for Claretforever, to go back to 1908/09.

Grandad maintained, 'til the day he left this earth, that we were robbed in the FA Cup that year.

The original game against Man Utd was abandoned after 72 minutes on the Turf, but Grandad always said conditions were no worse at that point than they were at kick-off. We were leading 1-0 at the time of the abandonement.......skullduggery perhaps ?

Anyway we lose the re-arranged game 2-3 and depart the FA Cup for another season.
