Tella conundrum

How do we hang on to Tella for next season? With performances like today it's as sure as hell that Southampton will want him in the Championship next season. We can't afford to bench him while Benson is injured but the more he performs like today then the more he is in the spotlight. I'm sure Tella would choose to play for us in the Premier League next season (and he deserves to) but he is contracted to Southampton and might not have a choice.

Him Beyer and Maatsen need to be signed.

Problem is Saints might use the Morgan Gibbs-White fee last summer as a guide, especially if he carries on this form.
It will be tough to sign all loanees so I'm resigned to losing a couple. I do believe Obafemi has been signed as a 'Tella replacement' if we aren't able to keep him (similar profiles).

Will have two years left on his contract this summer.
They'll want a decent fee for him

If you look on the saints board, most either seem resigned to losing him or not really bothered.
One quote
“Clearly found his level. We've seen enough of him to know he's no PL standard”.

If he keeps banging them in I really don’t think we’ll have a chance of keeping him unfortunately.

And to add, his Club after today could see their Manager being slotted which might mean their new Manager will start him next season from the off.

He’s been fantastic but would be difficult to afford to sign him as it will be Harwood Bellis and Maatsen . Hopefully 1 of these 3 would be good ,2 would be superb .

Beyer is a real possibility.
Harwood Bellis improbable.
If our board were prepared to gamble a huge chunk of the potential PL money perhaps we could get Maatsen and Tella, but where would that leave the Obafemi deal?

If we can sign Tella / Beyer / Maatsen then a New CM and a striker then we have a real chance of European football

There has to be a deal to be done. Having earned the right to play in the Premier League, he isn’t going to want to play in the Championship again for a team that didn’t want him this season, and Southampton won’t want to risk being in the same situation that Swansea have had with Obafemi.
After today we have to sign him, even if it means paying up a bit. That was one of the best individual performances I’ve ever seen on the Turf.

Maatsen I think we have a good chance with, simply because Chelsea's squad is massive and they need people off the books. And his fee isn't as likely to reflect his ability. Same with Beyer. Southampton will want a lot for Tella after this season, and with the forward players we have signed permanently he might just be too expensive. Especially when we'll need to spend a pretty penny on a central midfielder. I hope I'm wrong obviously, he's a terrific player and would love to sign him

Tella looks as if he’s enjoying his time with us, the fans love him and it’s our club that have given him his chance in the limelight. Couple all these together and the probability of premier league football I think he will want to stay with us. It’s just down to Alan Pace to get the best price possible for BFC

Not really much of a conundrum. There is a reason why Tella is scoring goals for fun in the Championship and not helping the club to whom he is contracted in a battle against relegation in the PL.
That reason is Southampton have realised he's very capable in the Championship but somewhat lightweight in their current plight.
Other obvious examples include David Nugent, prolific in the Championship, helping a number of clubs gain PL status, but he soon found himself on the bench in a PL setting as his score rate dipped drastically.
Tella is a fan favourite at Turf Moor and a key part of why the club is top of the league by some distance.
I'm not so sure the club should be digging deep into its pockets. In PL terms, it could all end in tears.

I feel genuinely sorry for Nathan Jones because he appears to be in a very difficult place
If he is still in a job tomorrow I would be surprised - but if you are Nathan Tella with the chance to be part of what VK is building here that must be a major factor as far as what happens next is concerned

Gerry Creaney was great for us - from the 91/92 season I'd add Walker and Marriott to the list - but given the level we are now at and the fact that it's a whole season Tella has been outstanding

If Saints go down no guarantee Tella would get in their first 11. VK has got the best out of him and helped make him a special player. I am convinced we can get him and should, as he clearly loves it here

Not read all the thread but to me it looks simple.
Striker who scores goals in team playing suitable to him.
Tranche r
Ro team going forward from team needing money.
Easy £10m

Having seen what he can do for a recently relegated side, Southampton might decide he's the man to fire them back into the Premier League, or at the very least demand top dollar for him from a newly promoted side that knows his worth. He might find himself in the unfortunate position of being too expensive and unwanted all at the same time.
I don't know his Southampton contract situation, but if they do go down it might be that we could get him on loan again with a mandatory purchase agreement upon survival which would suit both parties. numbers plucked from thin air - but imagine southampton want £15m for him if we swap places, we only want to pay £7m so we agree to pay £10m if we stay up. Or something, I don't know. Manchester United have a striker on loan from Burnley so as far as I'm concerned football can't get any weirder.

Nathan Dyer and Gary Cahill come to mind. But as loan wingers go he's the polar opposite to Fernando Guerrero.
That said not to take away from his excellent hat trick but Tella still lacks a few things for the higher level.
First half he was still too fond of going down and hoping he got a decision. His decision making is still iffy, normally he holds on too long and is too selfish but his decision to look for Foster rather than get a 4th was the most selfless yet mistakenly generous thing I've ever seen on a football pitch. Reminiscent of Guti who never seemed to want to score. He's got a great first touch, skill, bags of pace, and is a very sharp instinctive finisher but his footballing brain isn't there yet, I think he's possibly a more natural striker than winger honestly.
He's absolutely superb at this level, but does strike me as a player in that limbo zone where he can walk the Championship but hasn't quite got the nous for the Premier League yet.
Said elsewhere and previously I'd keep him if we can, but he's #3 on my list of loans to make permanent even after his performance today. As good as he is he still has flaws to iron out and isn't irreplaceable.

I have no doubts we will be signing him. He’ll be begging to come back. Yes, we have to agree a fee, but I think it’ll be a relatively easy deal.

Nathan Dyer wouldn't even cross my mind as a good loan player for Leicester and he won the bloody Premier League with them, let alone for us!
He did have a good game against Millwall twenty years ago though.

He’s up to 14 goals in all competitions.
Can the stattos on the forum tell me if a loan player has ever scored 20 goals in a season for us?
In fact has he already scored more goals in a season than any other loan player we’ve had?

David Johnson might be a better example, though? He was really good for us albeit in a really short spell.

Best result would be Southampton go down as we go up and they're looking to offload players from their books.
Still, won't come cheap though as they can now see he could get them out of the Championship.

1 player will be well sought after JWP & depending on the contractual statuses elsewhere & no noises forthcoming they can afford to hang to everybody else for at least a season, obviously everybodys got a price & for Southampton the price will be high he's young & presents a opportunity for them to do the business in the championship even if he is available we will face stern competition elsewhere. That's the price you pay in 1 respect with loanees you offer the springboard & that's been taken at our advantage on a short term basis only.

I hope we can sign him. He's having a great season and playing with a smile on his face. I find it a bit odd some Saints fans have decided he's not good enough for the PL. He's only 23. No reason he can't continue to improve as a player.

He's definitely good enough for the Premier League and has probably improved here under VK's management. Southampton are probably about to shed Jones anyway. Club is in turmoil.

I think some of it's sarcasm in relation to what their esteemed manager thinks some of us haven't grasped that though & have taken it literally. Some of them I suspect quite a lot are p1ssed off he's not there helping their cause & would have liked him to return.

Tella is a proven championship goalscorer. He could end up being the player of the season. Southampton will need his goals to return the PL so they may not want to sell.

Nathan Tella - 9.8
Netted a hat-trick as Burnley continued their march towards the Championship title with a 3-0 win over Preston.

They sent him out on loan to get game time and see if he developed further, because he was no more than a squad player prior to this season, not getting very much game time.
In fact by the end of the season he will have more appearances for us than saints and he's been on their books since 2019.
There was never a guarantee that he'd do this well and all its done is prove to Southampton that they've got a very good championship player on their books and he would probably make the step up into the PL with the right manager/framework, or if they get relegated he can help fire them back up.
If they decide to keep him then so be it, I have faith in our recruitment team to find a good replacement for him.
Plus, if we continue to have successful loans, we're more likely to have access to a higher standard of loan players in the future

Southampton look to be going down. They have a player proven in the Championship to help them get promoted back at the first time of asking. Understandable they'll want to keep him.
