I read about the programme this morning and decided to record it, it didn’t mention the Burnley feature so that will be a bonus.

A short part of the programme covers Alan Pace and his daughter. Alan is shown in a very normal family situation. His daughter is shown getting engaged at Turf Moor. The Turf looks at night immense. I would trust this man. He is described as having bought the local football team.

The producers of this programme obviously wanted to keep the focus and message and about this form of life style/morality that represents their church.
The programme shows a night scene at Turf Moor where his daughter is engaged. It's impressive.
American venture capitalists do what they do but I think we are in as good a situation as we could have ever hoped.

Lazy comments and lazy or maybe self centred reactions. Make the effort to watch the programme which generally most folks would to prefer to BFC be utimately owned by a group let d by Alan Pace.

Churches in the USA tend to be exempt from the usual taxation laws, so they reap in millions from their followers.
The Catholic church isn't as rich as the Mormon one from what I've read though, the Mormons have done very well out of the tithe part of their religion and investing it etc, all without the need to pay taxes on a lot of it.

I’ve read a little bit about Mormonism mainly because I was interested about what they are about.
I was brought up catholic but I’m an atheist/agnostic now, to me all religions are ridiculous but as long as they don’t impact my life I’ve no problem with what people choose to believe in.
Mormonism seems to be particularly strange given it’s a new religion based on one blokes vision however ever Mormon I’ve ever met has been very decent.
I live in east Leeds and there is a large Mormon church here and you often see the young Americans walking the streets on their mission. Always very nice when they have spoken to me.
No doubt the religious hierarchy will have some skeletons in its closets (every large organism does), but in the main Mormons seem to enjoy their lives and the manner in which they live it. They are not going round causing wars which is always a bonus when it comes to religion.
Under the Banner of Heaven On Disney is an excellent true crime drama on Disney plus about some of the more extreme sects of Mormonism

Mormonism does sound absolutely bats**t crazy. But then that’s just because it’s less familiar and modern. It’s probably way less bats**t crazy than the other ‘established’ religious guff.
While we’re top of the league though, we’re all good. I won’t start openly mocking it until we lose a few.

We have family who are Mormons and they will explain their beliefs without attempting conversation
They support sick, pregnant and struggling members who are finding life hard.

If we end this season with 107 points, 100 goals in the league and win the FA cup some still won't be able to get over the owners. It is a shame for them we couldn't do this with owners born on Brunshaw Rd

Think that’s a little unfair. It’s no more a cult than most other organised religions, you’re allowed to walk away whenever you want, in fact last nights programme included a few that had.

First settled in Jackson, Missouri after travelling West from New York. Jackson is best known now as the home county of the James Younger gang (Jesse James), but in the 1830’s it was the site of the first Mormon war.
There were three Mormon wars before they were expelled from Moussouri, settling it Illinois before finding a permanent home after further opposition. Joseph Smith their first prophet had a John Brown type belief in his vision and like Brown wasn’t one for compromise. The faith settled into the unwanted desert grew in relative isolation and in that way avoided Enlightenments full impact. The Mormon faith was welcomed in Dissent Lancashire and thrived alongside the other ‘new’ deserting groups: the Baptists and later the Methodists (the first Methodist Connexxion being set up around Nelson, Burnley and Rossendale in the 1740’s).
It eems very weird that East Lancs has a reputation for intollerence, when in fact history tells us it was our ancestors that were the most welcoming and open minded of the period, probably in the world.
Mormons have been in Lancashire since the 1840’s.

I’m not religious at all so I’m not defending any religion as such, but why is the Mormon origin story any more bonkers than other religions? It’s just a version of Moses and the Ten Commandments.

And Quakers are ‘god visited Pendle Hill’. Most religions have a god or their offspring visiting at some point, I don’t see why one is different to any other.

What these threads tend to demonstrate is a small minded lack of broader tolerance and understanding, and an arrogance not just that “my way is better” but it is also more right and virtuous. It tends to be the same posters too.
I judge people for how they are with me and every mormon I have met has seemed a decent person. That can’t be universal but is my experience. I spent a week in Utah and it was fascinating, a bit different but fundamentally decent. I know plenty of non-religious types who aren’t. I’m tempted to say non-religious folk come across as more selfish and self-absorbed but in the interests of that broader tolerance and understanding I’ll just say we are all different and we should respect those differences in opinion about how a life should be lived.

That is not quite right it’s more there was a huge sermon there but I’m not debating semantics.
Quakerism is completely different than most mega religions/offsets of Christianity tbh in the fact that it’s pretty humble - more about introspection and community and you aren’t going to see embezzlement like the Mormon Church or Catholic Church has seen in it’s time.

A few people have commented on the politness and niceness of Mormons. Can it be that Mormons are genetically nicer and politer than other kinds of people? Lucky genes, perhaps?
It seems unlikely to be a genetic component doesn't it? There's clearly something in their culture that promotes this.
Another thing to take into account: It's not just about being polite or nice. As the BBC documentary pointed out, they live longer, are healthier and are also happier.
Something else: They are more prosperous. So they can afford things like better education, better healthcare and are more likely to contribute higher taxes to the good of society.
There's so much that so many could learn from instilling the virtues that promote these successes in life and yet many just want to poke fun, insult or pick apart the scripture. You can do that with any religion, but Mormons are an especially easy target.
The BBC documentary was actually very fair and balanced. That was a a pleasant surprise.

But then the official Methodist church decided to allow gay marriage
Turns out that quite a lot of these lovely people didn't like that, and set up their own independent Methodist church

I don't think anyone is trying to make that point. Certainly not on this thread.
For clarity of what I have said, the point I made was that lots of Mormons are nice and that this is clearly something cultural. What I didn't say was that they were nice
because they are religious.
I'd like to repeat the idea that we ought to be looking, as a society, the replicate things that help people to live happy, healthy, prosperous lives and things that spread manners, courtesy and politeness. These things are at the heart of every good culture.
