Does anybody know how many local authorities are responsible for household waste disposal in the UK and where I might get a definitive list?

I'd like to send them a FOI requests to cover the whole of England.

However I don't want to waste my time sending a request to, for example, Burnley council if the waste disposal is actually run by Lancs County council.

Can anybody advise?

You might be better googling waste recycling in England and doing the same for the other devolved nations. Or start with googling is waste recyling devolved in UK. Good luck.

Only the upper tier authorities are responsible for disposal - all county councils, all unitary authorities (like Blackburn and Blackpool) and all the metropolitan authorities in the bigger cities.

Under OJEU a Spaniard company took over our (Burnley) Wheelie Bins service. As if we didn't know how to do this ourselves; don't know where they send all the rubbish.

'Household Waste Disposal' covers a range of services.

You have the collection section, wheely bins and recycling bins, usually carried out by or on behalf of the local councils. They also collect other large items separately, like furniture. Then you have what are now known as recycling centres, 'dumps' as we used to call them. They seem to be run by County Councils and the like as Dougall mentioned.

It will still be managed by Burnley Council though. What's collected will likely be taken by the refuse lorries to a Waste Transfer Station where it will be put on trains and taken to a landfill site. The alternative might be an Incinerator. You can ask BBC what they do with it.

It is recycled at a recycling centre, the plant I work at operates on about a 75% recovery ratio. The other 25% is sent to landfill sites
