Yes there is an element of politics to it.

BUT

If you don't enter a decent song you will not win. We had what the kids would call a banger last year so we did well. Not heard this year's effort yet.

The song 'we've' chosen will be lucky to finish in the top ten. It's ten-a-penny landfill pop-trash, and I'm being too kind here. If you're going to enter a generic pop song, at least have something that makes the song stand out from the other dross.

It's not unusual for a host country to enter some cookie-cutter blandness to avoid having the expense the following year.

Ive seen a (to me plausible) explanation of our much improved score last year as being because UK became more popular in many (especially eastern/northern) European countries because of our relatively strong support of Ukraine against the generally hated Russians.

Could be because it was a good song though for all I know.

There's a lot of money in it nowadays for the hosting city. Thousands of fans along with the media circus and its entourage, even from countries that aren't represented. And it goes on for a full week as well. Who said kitsch wasn't popular...

The costs are a bit of a head scratcher for me. Depending on which website you look at it would appear that the BBC will be contributing £10m and Liverpool Merseyside Region £4m.
Income will include that from the Eurovision village at Pier Head and of course from the ticket sales from the various heats and final all of which instantly sold out.
Given that the event uses existing venues £14m seems an awful lot of dosh to blow on an overload of hey diddle diddles and even more bing bang bongs.

I might be in the minority but I found last year's UK entry good, and although it's a bit bland what I've heard of this year's is catchy enough, might be a bit generic though to do as well as Sam Ryder fared, though how much of that success was based on the politics who knows.

Not really a huge Eurovision fan myself, however with all due respect I doubt this board fits the demographic of most Eurovision devotees.

When it comes to Eurovision, I tend to find some people protesteth too much.

I care more about Owen Coyle than I do this. And TBH, I gave up worrying about him years ago.

Yes. This is about right. Prior to that we had years of dreadful songs that would not have got through the semi final stage if we did not get a bye.

It's "a song for Europe" so it isn't necessarily going to equate to the same **** that is in our chart right now or we'd just enter Ed sheeran and win. The rest of Europe would probably hear it and judge it to be what it actually is.
And there's no point doing "what won last year" as they normally see through that straight away. This uk entry ought to end up on the right hand side of the board and it wouldn't matter which country submitted it.

The competition is supposed to be a bit of fun, and those that enjoy it, dress up, go, have parties, etc generally are happy to take part.

Yes, and those that have absolutely no interest in it whatsoever come on this messageboard, click on the thread title of a subject that they have no interest in the slightest or despise and then take the time to post this fact so we all know.

I think it is a good nights entertainment that comes around once a year. I know thats not the cool thing to say but there it is.

Exactly. Take it for what it is, have a few beers, have a laugh.

Eurovision is great - good fun, some decent songs now and then, Graham N is a laugh doing the commentary and the voting is actually quite exciting. If you don’t like it, just avoid it.

The music is mostly rubbish and the show is the most obscenely gaudy thing you'll see on British TV, but this is the stuff that makes it. If it took itself seriously, hardly anyone would watch it in the UK.

Get some score sheets printed off. Crack some beers open and have a different Saturday evening for this tawdry once-a-year event. Oh, and have a laugh too. It will do some of you good.

Did you mean "lucky to finish with 10 points"? If I was betting over/under 10, I'd bet under. Regardless of support for Ukraine, I doubt we'll get enough sympathy votes to register.

Every year it seems we’ve hit Rock Bottom with our entry.
And then after a while, you think you’re beginning to like the song - Ooh Ah, Just A Little Bit.
It can take while to be certain - best not rush Making Your Mind Up.

You are probably right, regarding under 10 points. Last year we had a good song, by Eurovision standards, and finished second. This year we have gone back to norm.

I've now listened to our entry.

It seems we've slipped back into trying to enter a song that sounds like one another country would enter into Eurovision.

Last year the song sounded like something that comes from the UK, but this is cookie-cutter Europop and historically we've got crap scores when trying that approach.

Mid-table at best I reckon.
