Change kit or away kit?

Post by Goddy » Mon Mar 13, 2023 9:29 am

Now don't give me a hard time for being an old fuddy-duddy (I know I am) but I'm beginning to get fed up with away teams wearing (a version of a) black kit. Is it an 'away' kit anyhow, or a change kit for a colour clash with the home team??

I don't know why teams just don't wear their usual (home, if you want) kit whenever they can. (Please don't give me the 'it's all about money' as I really doubt people will suddenly rush off to buy an away kit because they've seen their team play in it).

I think the final straw for me was the Fulham -Arsenal game yesterday. I mean Arsenal ended up playing in a kit which was much more of a colour clash than if they'd turned up in their usual read and white.

OK - slightly pathetic/pedantic rant over but, if I had my way, we'd get teams (including us) playing in their usual kit as much as often.

PS reminds me of the 80's when it seemed all away teams played in yellow back then, leading to the banal chant of 'yell-ow, yell-ow'. Sadly I can't get 'blaaack' to scan in the same way for the chant ;) ...perhaps we could have all away teams calling their black away kit 'charcoal' to solve that problem (or any other Farrow and Ball 2-syllable colour you might like)

I'm with you - and at Ipswich, with the background of their stand on the opposite side, it was difficult picking up our players wearing that black thing we have.

I really don’t like any of these black kits. Agree about Arsenal yesterday they could have played in their home kit.

Black backgrounds/advertising are very much in vogue, as you can see at the Turf.

The clubs traditional colours should be compulsory, if there is no clash.

Not when there's a background like there was at Ipswich - dreadful trying to pick it up and it wasn't just me saying it.

I remember an FA cup game in 1983 when we were drawn away to Hyde United.

It was however agreed that the game would be played at the Turf, I think because Hyde figured they would get more in gate receipts but I wasn't so old so not 100% sure

Due to Hyde playing in red, and it technically being their home game, we strolled out at the Turf wearing our yellow away kit

All opinion though isn’t it? Someone on this thread has it up there as our best, watching us play in it I think it’s horrendous.

On the opening day of the 1986/7 season we played away at Torquay on the Saturday night. We took the yellow kit obviously not realising that was Torquay's colour. We ended up playing in their blue away kit complete with 'Rotolok' sponsors.

If Burnley had a yellow away/change kit there would never be a need for a third kit within the EFL or EPL. Perhaps Bradford City with some of their creations over the years.

Have always thought that black kits should not be allowed and should be the referees kit only. Football managed for many decades with this. I was never aware of those clubs with black and white stripes, Grimsby, Notts County etc having a problem in yesteryear.

It now seems that in a lot of games the referees and goalkeepers wear the same colours. Don't like or understand that either.

Mimi rant over it seems

Got me thinking of a match between Burnley and Coventry in the early 70s. Burnley in the then all claret shirt, Coventry wearing green and black stripes. The keepers, Alan Stevenson wore green and Bill Glazier wore red. After a bit of discussion both changed into an all white Burnley change shirt complete with badge for the game

wasn't it Man Utd that changed at half time (years ago) because they couldn't see each other ? Away at Southampton springs to mind. It's a very real issue, it does surprise me we haven't gone for a bright strip - look at Man City's, no way their players can miss each other

Black kits are awesome to look at but not to play in.

Having light colours (especially for night games) makes a lot more sense - white is great you can see teammates out of your peripheral vision way easier

Billy Hamilton once said in interview that Burnley preferred the yellow kit for away night matches as it was far easier to recognise than dark kits, even claret and blue under the lights.

Arsenal and Spurs normally play in their home kits when they play each other.
The sleeves of Arsenal's home shirt are the same colour as Tottenham's home shirt.

Doesn't seem to matter in their derby games.

I was on the front row of the Jimmy Mac for the Bristol City match this season and could barely make out their players in their all dark grey strip.
As for unnecessary kit changes, I'm in full agreement with the OP, the most ridiculous one being when Norwich played in white shirts at the Turf a few seasons back.

Torquay had played in blue the previous season. Burnley didn't know they had changed. (The times and finances being what they were, they probably couldn't afford the new version of the Playfair yearbook and were waiting for it to be remaindered in the new year.)

My favourite away kit was from a good few years back. It was light blue shirts with clarets shorts and light blue socks. It looked the DBs it really did, especially under lights. It was pre sponsorship days for sure but Frankie Casp and Dougie Collins looked very smart in it.
Never liked black kit.

Yes, we played in yellow at Plainmoor in 85/6 - a stultifying 0-2 Tuesday night defeat in February. I think a prominent member of this board completed 'the 92' that night.
