Holts, Scotland Rd, Nelson. Predominantly F&C served - pies/ pudding on request. Always a queue outside and up the road. Huge Burnley fan as well.

Junction of Townley Street and Briercliffe Road if still open was decent and if still open it has been a chippy for over 100 years as my grandparents used to own it in the early 1900's

Don’t go anymore. The last time I went to feed a family I nearly had to remortgage the house. At least I’m doing my bit to bring down inflation. I’m surprised more havn’t gone bust.

The one thing to look out for, is a lot of chippys serve haddock now instead of Cod to keep prices down.

Always best to ask to be sure.

Holts on Scotland rd in Nelson has been my “go to” (all the way from Burnley) for a while, but the owner/fryer has taken a back seat and there are two new people involved. Let’s see how it goes…🤔

Agree, they also do gluten free fish and chips and curry, means the Mrs can enjoy too being coeliac.

Amazing how many get it wrong for a simple dish.

Ideally Haddock, always animal fat, properly filleted (definitely no bones or skin) and always with scraps :)

Oh and if you add curry sauce, you’re a mentalist (personally I’d add mushy peas to that but appreciate that the disgusting things are traditional with fish and chips).

Edit - just to add, what are pickled eggs all about!?

Mushy peas are vile.
Much rather have the marrowfat variety.

As for skin on, most chippies ive been to south of Birmingham leave some skin on the underside.
Not so much up here.

Live near Holmes Chapel now and there is a chippy where the haddock is massive and enough to feed two along with chips and peas
Also following DCWat who decides to serve minted peas with fish and chips? Ugh

I grew up in Burnley Wood and Belfields was the Friday night chippy tea and it was great back in the day, sadly they have not served anything decent for at least 15 years.

My dad would get some pies from haffners at lunchtime and warm them up for tea with some chips and gravy from Belfields whilst I read the Burnley Express for the team news for whatever game we had the following day.

Round my way haddock has always been more expensive than cod. And at £15 for fish, chips and curry sauce they can keep them both

Belfields now bang average and very expensive.
The chippy in Worsthorne is excellent - very good value too.

We went to Connellys this week.

It had gone a little hit & miss with previous owners but seems to have improved with these ones. Decent portion of chips and tasty fish at a good price

3xFish & chips, mushy peas & a jumb sausage (for the dog) all for £21

The debate about Cod and haddock is long running, but they are very similar in taste and texture. We often buy F and C, the one mentioned in Padiham, the one at Gannow top and Belfields. Out of town best chippy is in Settle across from the petrol station.

I prefer Pollock , it has more taste and is normally cheaper.

My favourites are 1st Turbot 2nd equal seas bass and sea trout cooked whole on the BBQ.

No self-respecting Lancastrian would give house room to the garbage that goes under the name of fish and chips here on the Scillies.

With that in mind I presented Mrs Fatboy with a decent sized deep fat fryer some 6 years ago. A serviceable veg plot looks after the spud department, and I catch my own fish from around a mile offshore when the seas are flat.

Mushy peas supply can be a bit erratic but our one grocers shop is a 2 mile bike ride away and usually obliges. A good beef dripping has to be brought in from Penzance though.

Needs must when the devil drives.. I can't contemplate a life without decent fish and chips. Mine are legendary and I often have discerning friends round in winter.. Never had a complaint yet.

Had Friday fish and chips yesterday somewhere on the Dark Side (Yorkshire) and it was excellent. Hate it when places give you a tiny fish but bulk it out with greasy batter. And always, always got to wash it down with a can of dandelion & burdock. Got into pickled eggs recently too.

Bit of a long shot question but I know you're Leeds based. Is the chippy next to the Chemic pub still going? That was the best when I was a student. Only 27 years ago!

I’ve been to quite a few of the recommendations on here and majority of them have all been beaten by Albert Road chippy in Barlick. Especially if you are wanting fish, it’s honestly so good.

Lee Holt has sold up and now under new management. Went last night and was very disappointed. Thin oily fish and chips tasted funny. Won’t be going again.

I lived round the corner from The Chemic and went to the chippy once a week. It was always good but it's 20 years since I lived there so no idea now.

Edit: just seen jdrobbo's reply. Pleased to read it's still going. I don't go that way much these days but will call in when I'm next up there.

Robbing buggers, they all charge at least £1 for Curry sauce, it's powdered stuff they buy in bulk then mixed it with tap water, pence per serving!
