Weirdly I was watching clips of Lilly Savage recently and she was so quick with with ‘savage’ one liners. Days when it wasn't political and we wasn't quibbling over pronouns or dealing with twitter outrage by innuendo or jokes.

I liked O’Gradys work, he seemed a genuinely nice fella.

Days when it wasn’t political? What does that mean?

RIP Paul O’Grady - a real trailblazer in many ways as Lily Savage, who suffered awful prejudice and abuse, but was wickedly funny. Seemed like a really nice guy in later years, with an obvious love of animals and the right principles.

If you haven’t read them already his autobiographical series of books are well written, in particular his first book which is a very detailed, and atmospheric depiction of a working class upbringing in 1960’s Birkenhead. He either kept a diary or his recollection is terrific. Plus his observations on life in that are very astute and will resonate strongly with some on here.

The title of the first volume is something like “At my Mother’s Knee & Other Low Joints.”

Great broadcaster too and was currently starring in a theatre production of Annie.

Your final sentence was excellent, the rest of your post disrespectful rubbish.

The world is a sadder place with his passing he always livened up any programmes he was involved in, and was one of those TV personalities who could speak to many different generations.

Lily Savage will be remembered as one of the all time great telly characters, and in his later career Paul evolved into a consummate presenter on a number of shows, his sitcoms never quite hit the mark and were relatively short-lived, however in general he had a good career.

RIP Paul thanks for the entertainment.

I worked with him many years ago as a dancer in one of his shows. Although he was the star and therefore the boss, he never behaved that way. He was very approachable and easy to talk to. I can most definitely tell you that a lot of "stars" are not like that

What sad news - he was a very funny man both when Lily and then himself with our without the dogs. I saw him live once when he was Lily but that is donkeys years ago.

I've just seen the post above from gtclaret - what he says about him is how I always thought he might be, decent, down to earth and approachable.

I've just looked to see if Battersea Dogs Home had anything to say following this sad news. This is what their CEO Peter Laurie has said.

“To many, Paul O’Grady was the immensely popular TV and radio presenter and comedian who lit up their screens with his razor-sharp humour and perpetual generosity and warmth. Battersea will forever remember Paul as a devoted animal lover with the biggest heart, who fell head over heels in love with every dog he met at our centres. Paul will always be associated with Battersea and we are truly saddened to have lost such a true friend and huge part of our charity.” “Paul had an extremely hands on approach as a Battersea Ambassador and has been fundamental in helping our charity to communicate important campaign messages. He was a champion for the underdog and would do anything to ensure all animals live a healthy and happy life. He will be dearly missed.

“Paul loved Battersea so much and we cannot thank him enough for everything he did for our charity and for rescue animals worldwide. We will forever be indebted to him for his endless generosity and support.”

A fabulously funny man and a kind soul. I think the last time I heard him was a Christmas show he did for BBC Radio 2 we he appeared to have got well stuck into the Christmas spirit, it was bloody hilarious

RIP x

R.I.P Paul.
Genuinely funny, with a razor wit.
An early barrier breaker on what was then, the norm.

Unlike some he had to find fame the hard way, doing the clubs years ago as lily savage and winning shows how talented he was!

Used to switch off/over anything he appeared on. But far too young an age for anyone. May have had an illness.

I think Paul demonstrated that you can be a perfectionist without being nasty. It's a lesson that some of the other rather odious "celebrates" I have had the misfortune to work with could do with learning
