Incident on M66

Just a heads up for anyone travelling to Turf Moor today via the M66 coming from Manchester - there has been an accident in the early hours of this morning and both lanes have been closed between Junctions 1 (Ramsbottom) and 2 (Bury). Don't know how long it's going to be closed for but looks serious. Traffic backing up on the A56, where I live, which is temporarily the diversion route.

Swansea might be at the Dunkenhalgh in Clayton le Moors.
That's where a lot of away teams stay.

Can anyone tell me if there are any delays on the A56 near Tesco/Mcds? Sometimes there's roadworks so it's single lane so trying to work out if I need to go a completely different way!

Audi A5 hit the man at 2am. The man was walking home up the motorway. 3 other cars then hit the body. One 19 year old man arrested for drunk driving.

All could be avoided by having lights on all Motorways.

Or by not walking on a motorway......

All could be avoided by pedestrians not walking along carriageway.

How would you go about stopping them?

How do you know having lights on would have avoided this?

Cars have headlights anyway.

Walking along a hard shoulder is one thing
Walking in the carriageway is stupidity.

I doubt having lights on the motorway would have prevented this tragedy. I doubt a pedestrian would have been sufficiently illuminated in time to enable a car traveling at 70mph to avoid them

ElectroClaret wrote:How do you know having lights on would have avoided this?

I have recently spent 10 years driving for a living, mainly on motorways and mainly at night. Obviously it is not possible for me to be certain that lights would have avoided this, but I do know that they would have given the driver a chance, even on lit motorways some are better than others, some are as good as daylight others aren't.

Cars do have headlights, on correctly adjusted dipped beam they give useful light up to about 30 feet in-front of your car if you're lucky. At 62mph you cover that in half a second. Simply not enough time to avoid something unexpected.

Once on an unlit section of the M55 I found that out because of a crashed car sideways across lane 3, with its front end into the central barrier, luckily I was in lane 2 (I had pulled out to lane 2 as a little further along there was a car on the hard shoulder with hazards on, so I pulled out in case someone was walking near it or changing a tyre etc. It was invisible until it was too late to avoid.

Another time on a well lit section of the M60 the car in front kicked up some debris, it looked like a length of wood, it was heading for my windscreen but seeing it early I pulled to the edge of my lane (it was busy at the time so I couldn't change lanes) it cost me a door mirror but if I hadn't been able to see it coming I probably wouldn't be here now.

Then there is the financial cost of incidents like this, years ago it was said that every fatal road incident costs a minimum of 1/2 million.

So what do you have against having safer motorways?

As stated on a few posts above, the problem, as you know very well, lies with folk walking on motorways in the first place.

And yes, as you say, you can't enforce that, but ultimately, people have to take responsibility for their actions.

This is unarguable.

I realise that in an ideal world there would be no walking on Motorways, but that would be no consolation to me if a loved one was needlessly killed, maybe by being silly after too much ale, or maybe while working on the road, or maybe when changing a wheel because of a puncture, or maybe getting out of a car that has caught fire.

'He/she shouldn't have been there' will be little to console the driver involved either.

Do you do much nighttime driving on unlit motorways?

I'm with yorkyclaret, we need lighting on all motorways. I too do a lot of late night driving and I have often wondered how difficult it would be to have "intelligent" lighting that comes on as you drive up the motorway and turns off when you've passed. Especially if the lights used low energy LEDs, can't be that hard surely.

Thanks Rick, to be fair I think that anyone with a lot of night time motorway driving will understand the problems, but if you have never had a Deer jump over the central reservation in front of you on the M66, some idiot driving towards you (on 'my' side of the road) on the 65 in Blackburn or someone else trying to jump off a bridge on the M60 with 2 others trying to stop him (at least that was how it looked) you would think it's no problem.

One thing that regularly amazes me on motorways is how those that have broken down behave.

I have lost count of the amount times I have seen unbelievable things on a hard shoulder from someone changing a wheel - including on the driver side of the car, with their arse swinging in the inside lane - to last week three lads piling out of the back of a 3 door hatchback for a pee, by exiting the vehicle through the driver's door not the passenger's!

On the continent, I believe it is law to carry a high visibility vest in the event you find yourself stranded on the motorway, as well as a warning triangle, and I am amazed that isn't the law over here.

There do appear to me more people than ever leaving their vehicle to stand on the embankment and await recovery, but I do still witness completely bonkers behaviour on the hard shoulder of a motorway.

They tell you to get well behind the barriers rather than staying in the car, safer that way.

yorkyclaret wrote:They tell you to get well behind the barriers rather than staying in the car, safer that way.
And to be fair, that is what I see more and more of, but wearing high vis vests and putting a warning triangle out would assist yet further, I am sure.

It's the law that you must leave your vehicle if you break down and stop on the hard shoulder. Failure to do so will get you points and points for each person in the car!

I remember my granddad's Merc having a reflective warning triangle on the underside of the boot. That was pretty slick.

What, even children? I suppose they'll have expired before they can drive themselves.

The Highway Code says you should get out of the car, though with exceptions for the disabled which includes (I would presume) those whose health isn't suited to the weather), but are you sure it's a criminal offence not to?

I think you are right dsr. The law may have changed since, but certainly when my wife had a tyre blowout going over Shap in extremely wet and windy conditions some years ago the AA advised her to put warning lights on but remain in the car.

Your life expectancy on the hard shoulder is, apparently 25 minutes*.

This, I presume, is on the basis that the road is lit and you do not stray into the main carriageway.

Either way, you are best to not remain should you find yourself in such a position.

That can't be true. Are they reckoning that if your car is on the hard shoulder, there's about an even chance that someone will plough into it within 25 minutes? I'd like to know how many cars break down, the average time on the hard shoulder, and how many of them get crashed in to.

I bet that becomes true when we have more of the so called smart M Ways where the hard shoulder can become an extra lane to help with congestion.
By the time most of these are in operation we will need more road space to accommodate the extra vehicles from our increasing adult population.
Always struck me as a Baldrick plan to convert hard shoulders for extra traffic to avoid/reduce congestion

I assumed he meant walking down the hard shoulder. There's no mention of a car.

There's no doubt street lighting improves visibility.

So logically, not just all the 1000 miles plus of motorway should be lit but also the tens of thousands of other unlit roads too?

No. Because there's a thing called proportionality. I think it's quite sensible what they're doing, removing the mile upon mile of unnecessary lighting spewing out light pollution into the atmosphere.

The cause of this accident seems to have been an illegal jaywalker hit by a ****** driver not 100% in command.

So you think it is sensible to, for instance, have loads of lights on the cul de sac where I live, blaring out all night, don't think there are ever more than 2 nightworkers returning home each night, who never get above 10mph. while thousands of others drive on the fastest roads in the country in darkness?

The full story will come out but to have been knocked over the central reservation into the other carriageway to me means he was walking in the outside lane. Very strange.
I'm all for illuminated motorways and sod the expense. I'll repeat this story.
I was coming home from a gig in Manchester. Just dropping down after Edenfield, clogging it.
Come across two muppets pushing their broken down car.
They were both covering up the rearlights by pushing behind the tyres, instead of getting to the middle of the boot.
Thankfully we all survived but it was close.
