Humble Pie
I thought Kompany was a naïve appointment. I wanted Wilder.
Shows what I know.

Your not on your own.
I'm not admitting to anything tonight though.
Erm. Is it a big pie?

Is it best with custard, cream or ice cream?
Re: Humble Pie
Fair play CTU, a lot of people slagged off the appointment but most won't admit it now.
I've always thought it was a masterstroke by Pace personally and not for one second do I believe them when they say they didn't expect promotion this season. Someone like Kompany isn't spending four seasons in the Championship.
Some serious intent was shown when Pace made the appointment.

I thought it was an exciting appointment with potential that might take 2-3 seasons. Did not expect the level of excitement he delivered though

I was hugely sceptical - I couldn’t have been more wrong!
The exodus in the summer, a pile of players I’d never heard of coming in to play in a league they’d never played in. It was a recipe for disaster in my eyes!
One thing I was right about - needing to keep some of the old heads. They’ve all been invaluable at various stages of the season.

Re: Humble Pie
At the time, felt getting rid of Dyche was madness, still believe we’d have had a better chance of stopping up with him, but we’ll never know.
As it turns out, maybe getting relegated and having a complete rebuild is what was needed, which I don’t think would’ve happened under Dyche in the same way that Kompany has done.
Was happy to see Kompany come in, and felt it was as good an appointment as we could dream of to replace Dyche.
Hand on heart, with the massive rebuild needed after relegation, I’d have been happy, and was expecting a top 10 finish, possibly pushing for playoffs.
Never expected to go straight back up, and what an immense achievement for the staff and players

Completely predictable & very unsurprising at a joyeous time what should be a thread like this springs up (it is the season after all) completely trying to separate everybody from being on the same page in order to score I told you so points, absolutely pathetic.

It's grounded reality of course the guy has done an excellent job & all the signings he made but just cautious with lavishing too much praise next season it'll go 1 way or the other & I'd like to think he'd be afforded time to do things his own way regardless of iffy results.

This isn't just down to VK though is it?
A few posters on here thought Pace & Co didn't have the clubs best interests at heart yet look at how far we've come, this started at the top without doubt
It's a fantastic time to be a Claret.
Now to see just how many big boys in the Prem we can upset. AGAIN

Re: Humble Pie
Absolutely.
I thought it was a name value gamble that would take too long to pay off given the state of our finances and the nature of football now putting so much pressure on rebounding instantly, few teams can afford to wait several years.
I thought the summer rebuild was more likely to be geared towards mitigating this and signing cheap players aiming to flog to recently promoted/relegated teams to fund the longer rebuild.
I thought it was going to be too slow, and that there wasn't enough track record to be confident of it working at all.
I was unbelievably wrong and I'm so so glad to have been. Nevermind too slow, we've had the fastest promotion in championship history. Unbelievable blinder, and fair play and credit to Pace for the appointment

We could park any misplaced misgivings for the night & just congratulate the club & the players for their achievements. It was only normal to have doubts with a new regime taking over & long established good manager leaving.

I would’ve been happy with Wilder but I liked the appointment. Thought he’d need time and patience though - young manager, squad overhaul, change of style etc. To achieve what he has, playing as we have, is nothing short of astonishing.

Re: Humble Pie
To me, the crippler about relegation was that it was reported that Vinny wouldn’t come if we weren’t in the Prem. I was overjoyed when he did, because it gave us access to Man C’s youngsters. Having said that, I wasn’t expecting such a fantastic season. IMO, he will, in time, become a better manager than Pep and yes, I know that’s a bold statement. Watch this space.

It definitely hung in the balance but it's safe to say pace knocked up a better omelette up than dyche & persuaded him there was a job here to do, credit to Vinny for taking the challenge up & to pace ensuring that happened.BennyD wrote: ↑Sat Apr 08, 2023 12:17 amTo me, the crippler about relegation was that it was reported that Vinny wouldn’t come if we weren’t in the Prem. Re: Humble Pie
I recall some of the panic on here after those friendly results in preseason.
To be fair though, not even the most optimistic fan could have predicted this season. It’s way beyond expectations given the circumstances we faced last summer.

It’s doubly strange when you’ve barely given this team an ounce of credit all season. Indeed you were taking great glee in writing us off early doors.
Utterly bizarre.

Re: Humble Pie
I'm eating a full pie of glory. Kompany was the manager I wanted at the outset because he's a top man and it sounded like he played interesting football. So I'm quite pleased I got what I wanted for a change and its worked out better than I expected.
Re: Humble Pie
I will hold my hands up.
Thought Kompany was a big risk, a name rather than a proven manager.
Early doors feared the worst, passing for the sake of it, side to side stuff with no end product and leaky at the back.
But the work Kompany and Bellamy have done since this season is phenomenal;
The work put in with the defenders and keeper especially after the Sheff utd debacle making us into the league’s best defence.
The master stoke of seeing the potential of Barnes in the system when a lot thought he was over the hill and sticking with him to anchor the attack and allow others to get forward and score the goals.
Turning Tella from a young player that looked raw but with potential and pace into a 20 goal a season striker.
It’s been nothing short of outstanding and I take my hat off to both of them

I though Twine would be our best signing and top scorer.
I also thought Barnes and JBG were past it and would contribute little.
I was massively wrong on both counts, shows what we fans know about footy.
