Ireland toiled in the field as SL racked up 591-6, including 4 centuries, a big task for Ireland as they start their reply.

A heavy defeat for Ireland who lost by an innings and 280 runs, some promising signs notably Tector in both innings, and he looks like one who isn't out of his depth at test level.

Ireland may well take a few more heavy losses as they adjust to stepping up to full test status, however in time they should reap the benefits and become more competitive.

2nd test starts on Monday at the same venue.
