Today's football 20/04

Post by claretburns » Thu Apr 20, 2023 7:30 pm

Europa League and Euro Conference quarter finals taking place tonight. United away at Sevilla, 2-2 on agg, and West Ham at home to Gent 1-1 on agg at 8pm.

Couple of decent early kicks offs, in the first leg Lech lost 4-1 on home to Fiorentina, they're currently winning 3-1 in Fiorentina and have 6 mins plus added time to take the tie to extra time.

In the Conference league AZ are leading 2-0 against Anderlecht on the night after losing 2-0 in Belgium last week so that tie is all square at 2-2 with 5 mins or so left.

I expect the Hammers to progress, but it's a toughie for Man U, Seville have a great record at home in European competition.
And United will also have Sunday's Cup semi against Brighton on their minds.
It'll be tight, but United to go out tonight, I reckon.

Union Saint-Gilloise Fc

Had never even heard of these until recently.
They were apparently the main team in Belgium, pre war.
60 games undeateated from 1933 until 35.
Only got back into the top division in '21 after 48 years out of it.

Yes, I know....must get out more.

Owned by Brighton chairman Tony Bloom. Brighton sent Mitoma on loan there last season.

Dreadful from Maguire again.

West Ham also behind 2-1 on aggregate now.

They got lucky there, and their defending certainly has been criminal in this 1st half, not that their attacking has been any better mind you.

Whenever Sevilla get to the Quarter Final of the Europa League or previously the UEFA Cup they have gone on to win it, superb record.

I was amazed my bookie was offering 14/5 on Sevilla to win this evening. I couldn't resist a small bet- thankfully recouped my afternoon's Newmarket losses. When I saw the team selection before the game I was very confident- I shouldve bunged a few more quid on really.

Looking at the "player rater" on the BBC website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65327031

c 4.7 (/10) for Casemiro, Eriksen, Antony are tops for United starters currently; Sancho. Martial, de Gea, Maguire all under 4 (Harry on 3.05)

Subs all under 3, Weghorst lowest on 2.77.

I didnt see the game, take it United didnt play well :D

Utd dismal, however West Ham cruised through, and there's every prospect of Cornet & Ings lining up in a European final soon.

There is definitely a pundit melt down where Wout is concerned.
The amount of stick, and deriding he gets is ridiculous.
WE know he isn't the greatest player to grace the prem, so what. He does what Ten Haag wants, he has proved himself in other arenas, but most importantly the Prem is littered with players no better, and a good few worse, than him.
So why do all these pundits think it gives them licence to slag him off, it's a giant band wagon that they all feel the need to jump on.
You don't here them calling these other players, for other teams. He has to be better than Maguire, who these same so called experts will jump to the defence of when he gets called up for England again.
Is it just because he is on loan from us, and in their arrogant ignorance, it just doesn't sit right with them a Burnley player, playing for United. They need to get off his back and start looking at the rest of that squad.

Agreed. There are at least 7/8 players who should be in the firing line ahead of him in the United squad.

Utd's woes on the road continue, and for me there's a clear lack of leaders in their squad these days.

Not the first time they've collapsed on their travels this season either.

Brentford 4 Man Utd 0

Man City 6 Man Utd 3

Liverpool 7 Man Utd 0

And yet they've also won the LC, and beaten Barcelona in Europe, so they do have the ability it's their mentality which I would question.

I’ve defended him by saying the ball never comes to him in the right spot for having a 1 touch or two touch finish. Eventually it grows on you that he’s a CF and he’s not getting in the correct positions. The supply into his feet is abysmal though.
