Still or sparkling? Either might be a better option at LB than Vitinho, but personally I think Charlie Taylor is a much underrated player, at least amongst Burnley fans.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Weghorst doesn't want to be at Burnley. His whole demeanour demonstrated that when he returned to the club for training a couple of weeks ago. He does have some who support him like your good self but the vast majority will be happy he has gone elsewhere. For myself it's a pity it's only a loan.AfloatinClaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 12:15 pmDisappointed but not surprised; i'd rather have lent them Jay-Rod

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I was thinking Weghorst might suit Kompany's system in the Barnes role, but you'd have to now assume that Kompany has seen him in pre-season and judged that he is not good enough for us. He has been a terrible signing for many reasons but it's actually now possible we are breaking even (minus salary) with the loan fees we are raking in.
I wonder if we have agreed this as part of a 'loan swap' with Hoffenheim in regards to Bruun-Larsen?

Can’t say I’m unhappy about Wout going out on loan, watched the benfica game where he struggled to get involved, and looked rather disinterested.

Glad to see him gone and evidently from what Kompany has seen of him he didn’t rate him.

Sooner Weghorst is out of the building then the better for all concerned.

Evidently a good player, but doesn't suit premier league tempo or physicality. Best move for all.

Happy with this. Hopefully these loan fees will go a long way to cancelling out the fee we paid for him.

Departure of Weghorst leaves us short of physicality up front, so that's another vacancy in the squad to be filled before the window closes.

Absolutely delighted that another club have taken him.
Fantastic to get at least some of his wages off the books and a loan fee that ought to cover the rest. Shame it ain’t a permanent move but then again that was never likely.

QPR fans rate him very very highly.
Scored against us on the Turf in April as well.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Currently have 4 strikers for what is usually 1 role in our system. It will definitely be interesting to see if Kompany wants another.claretspice wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 12:57 pmDeparture of Weghorst leaves us short of physicality up front, so that's another vacancy in the squad to be filled before the window closes.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I'm really hoping Foster gets some confidence and fulfills his potental and then becomes our first choice striker, with Obafemi's injury and Jay not getting any younger we don't actually have many options.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I am assuming you are including amdouni (more of a 10?) and obafemi (injured) along with Jay (creaking, ineffective at this level? ) and foster (raw, unproven).
If we use amdouni in the central position, we really need Tella or someone of that ilk to run in behind from wide, unless people think redmond or perhaps Laursen can do that.

I think we could see Amdouni play that role but yeah I take your point on all of that.

Amdouni’s best goal scoring run for Basel last season was from up front. Fair points on the others and I don’t disagree, just from a numbers perspective having 4 for 1 role already seems a lot!Stevie Morgan wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 1:11 pmI am assuming you are including amdouni (more of a 10?) and obafemi (injured) along with Jay (creaking, ineffective at this level? ) and foster (raw, unproven).

I would be shocked if the loan fee covers the transfer payments we are to pay for him this year (and the same goes for last years loans as well) so far we are likely to be well out of pocket on him - these things can happen but at this stage our club cannot really afford repeats on this

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Of the 4 i think you are referring to- Jay is probably back up this season, Obafemi is injured long term, Foster has potential but plenty to prove, and Amdouni is regarded as being as much a 10 as a 9.
It is a pragmatic point, but I think generally, a striker who provides a physical platform and can hold the ball up has been important for teams coming up and trying to establish themselves. Even last season when we were rarely under pressure, Jay initially and then Barnes were invaluable in giving us that platform. Weghorst has his limitations but he had the link game with his back to goal to give our play a focal point. If Foster is to be that man then fair enough but it's a big challenge.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
It doesn't really matter what qualities you think he may possess. We wouldn't see them from him in a Burnley shirt. We saw last season how significant and important 'the right attitude' was to us. The same applies to any team, anywhere at any level.of football.claretspice wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 12:57 pmDeparture of Weghorst leaves us short of physicality up front, so that's another vacancy in the squad to be filled before the window closes.
I've seen too many disruptive players in my time as a Claret and nothing good ever comes from it. Good luck to him at Hoffenheim and good luck to them. I suspect he won't be the last exiting the club in the next couple of weeks.

I keep seeing posts like yours about his "attitude" and "disruption", but have never seen any evidence to that. Do I think he's a great player? No. Do I think he suits our current style of play? Also no. But I can't judge his entire personality based on a short clip with Roberts years ago and the fact that in his contract he wanted to play in the top division to better his chances of a call up for the World Cup. For all we know, he's been the consummate professional.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 1:16 pmIt doesn't really matter what qualities you think he may possess. Have to agree with claretspice re: strikers and especially Foster. There seems to be an awful.lot of pressure building around him. Very inexperienced.and no goals scored in pre-season where he has featured regularly. Wishing him all the best luck to get on the scoresheet but currently not too confident that he will.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think that short term and longer term combined, we must be thinking Zeki Amdouni and Lyle Foster, with currently Amdouni my first choice giving Foster more time to grow into the role, or to be the one coming into the game from off the bench. It would also allow our other young prospects to step up if one if either of those two get an injury. I'm sure that VK is hoping to never feel that he has a 'best eleven', rather a best 22 or more.

All clubs have transfers that don’t work out. We made a massive profit on Chris Wood and replaced him with a much cheaper player in Weghorst.
We are having a pretty significant amount of his wages covered by the loan fees too.
We would not have bought Weghorst but for having to sell Wood so not sure you can look at the purchase of Weghorst as one isolated transaction. And from that point of view Weghorst has been pretty much a free transfer !
Yes would have been better if Weghorst would have worked out from a playing point of view but he was not bought by VK either.

We do know that the club are on a financial rebuild and appear to be stretching it in the transfer market (certainly based on historical precedent), by taking on additional credit/debt and factoring future tv revenues, the former carrying costs and the latter impacting future income streams. As with every approach there is risk, We know that the costs of Weghorst are significantly greater than many players purchased since and he is not being used (and I make no judgement about that). as I said these things can happen it just makes things more challenging and that is why I said what I did

reportedly similar wages, greater amortisation, outstanding transfer payments, unlikely to produce a profit on 'disposal' and without the performance impact on match results and league position
I had acknowledged that these things can happen with transfers, applied zero blame, just recognised the financial impact makes thins difficult
there are question marks about whether he was signed by Dyche
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
With regard to Churlinov, it looks as though he’s got over his serious illness and that Schalke are still interested in taking him back.
It’s a shame he never really made it with us, but he’s obviously highly rated in Gelsenkirchen.

Weghorst's departure frees up wages. Not claiming to be in the know but I would not be surprised to see an attacker incoming on loan with a view/obligation to buy next summer.

After the Kompany contract renewal - our 2nd biggest signing of the summer, for me.
Benson will be fantastic in this league and (whilst I would happily see him stay here till retirement!) will be primed at 27-ish next summer for a mega money sale for us. This is the strategy working perfectly.
Buzzing at that news!

Of course we bought a cheaper version in terms of the transfer fee we paid and would have had a pretty large surplus on the Wood / Weghorst deal irrespective of how it was structured and we dealt with with getting the money in.
I’m just saying I do not think the Weghorst deal will have much of an impact on us financially - and I doubt very much from the way we are spending money it’s made things “difficult”.
