Never judge the squad until the window closes.
That said, I do think at the minute the squad is a bit lopsided and the players we've brought in are such that if it all comes off, we'll look like absolute geniuses, but if it doesn't we might look a bit as though we've overcomplicated things.
At present, we've spent a lot of money but only Berge is a clear improvement on the options we already had in any given position. That's in part testament to the quality we've brought in previously (especially at centre back, where O'Shea compliments Beyer, Al Dakhil and Ekdal nicely enough). Amdouni looks interesting but a tricky player to fit into the first eleven unless he plays at centre forward, and he clearly isn't your classic line leading centre forward - which is something that often makes the difference between teams that survive, and those that don't (see Bournemouth last season, and conversely Leeds). Odobert looks like an expensive one for the future. Trafford is clearly talented but query whether 2 very callow keepers who have huge potential but little experience in the white heat of a top league is the right dynamic in that position. All in all I think you can sympathise with a view that we might turn out to be a team that is very nice on the eye, but a bit soft in key areas at the back, and lacking a little presence up front (of course, if Foster can delivery on his promise that equation may change a bit).
We'll see how it all pans out, and none of us have seen enough of the likes of Amdouni and Odobert to really know how they'll pan out - but it's understandable that there might be the odd doubt. We clearly need a left back, and another option either wide right or up front - plus potentially a midfielder. You'd imagine that given our spend to date we're going to struggle to plug all 3 positions with big money signings and, in a world of rising interest rates we're going to have to look to use the loan market well. Given the loan market for Premier League quality players who can fit into VK's system is inevitably a narrow market, that's not an option that is free from risk in the last days of the window.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Ran away with league last year , brought players in that move us forward, still 10 days to go. I think I’ll trust vinny to know what’s required…. Ill make my call on season when were 8 to 10 games in..LaLigaClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 7:37 pmIt was mentioned by lots of posters all summer long that we needed LB's, upgrades to midfield and a goal scoring striker. Yet with 10 days to go in the window we have signed the square root of nothing for LB's, seemingly desperate for Maatsen, Koulibaly deal fell over and nothing else happening. Upgrades on Cork and Bastien, no the same square root of nothing except Berge who might be a replacement for Brownhill. On strikers we started with Obifemi who subsequently is injured. Foster firing total blanks, aging Jay Rod who sadly isn't now PL material, Barnes who left and Wout Weghorst who went on loan. Yes we bought Amdouni but the others still worry me and now we have sent Twine out on loan. We have brought in some young kids with potential , Redmond and some bit part players to sub Benson and Zaroury during games or when not available. Tella not happening. The Ramsay deal has gone on wat too long and has very strange rumoured conditions attached, Lakonga not happening. A number of other what looked liked being incomings suddenly fall over lately. Whilst the club has brought in a number of players the obvious areas that needed strengthening all summer long have not gone at all well. Critical I know but we need some quality additions in the areas of weakness not more injury prone bit part players who need keeping in cotton wool, not more inexperienced kids with potential and not more wide playing clones of what we already have.

I don’t see any reason why Phillips shouldn’t come to us. The story is Pep wants him to get PL game time, they won’t want to send him to another Big 6 club ( or Newcastle!) he knows Kompany well and knows he will be playing a City-style of football. Why not Burnley?

it makes a nice change from being able to name the entire starting 11 for a season in a 4-4-2 ! Opposition scouts will actually have to do some work nowCoolClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 8:52 pmImproved in some areas for sure, you’d have hoped we’d have for best part of 100 mill as well!
That was one of them freak games like. It happens
I want to know if VK plans on playing 3 at the back every game this year, well 3 in possession
Our signings so far definitely indicate that.

If Citeh want to loan him to a PL club we ought to be viewed as ideal candidates.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Three observations:
On the signings - obviously wait until the window shuts but I feel confident we will add at least two more, big clubs are leaving things to the last minute by asking silly prices or terms so it is sensible to play hardball for now. There is still a chance that Maatsen, Lokonga or Ramsay will sign once their clubs realise it is the best they can do. Rumours are we have kept aside over £20m for a CF so lets see.
On the squad logic - VK clearly wants some big sales to keep financing rebuilding and constant growth, if we have 3 or 4 old hands to buff things up and add experience that makes it really hard to have 4 younger players ready to sell for big money. The “experience” is going to come from the Cullens, Ekdals, Berges of this world, that is, mid 20s at best. That’s the route we have decided to take. Definitely risky but lets assume Vinny knows what he is doing.
On this thread - wouldn’t it be so much easier if daft posts from uber negative fishermen are simply blocked rather than people quoting it and having a go at them so that even those of us who have blocked can’t help but see it? Most of us are being driven witless by this thread and its because too much nonsense is leading to a 50 post argument.

Currently have 22 over 21 years of age players plus a loan so only room for two more loans or over 21 year old players unless we loan or sell players like Bastien and Churlinov or someone like Beyer is out until January

Why people allow themselves get so wound up over particular posters or opinions on a transfer discussion thread is beyond me.
There's an off button, there's an ignore button, there are millions of other websites they could visit.
Perhaps we should ban transfer threads just like we banned political threads so that people don't have to to read things they don't like or agree with.
Different people have different views of the world and are allowed to express them. If you don't like that then I suggest that the internet is not for you.

Suggestion in Germany that we’ve bid £5.5m for the 20 year old Sporting CP midfielder Renato Veiga and offered a 5 year deal. Competition from FC Basel.

Having only 19 posts though you are either new, and haven’t yet been driven to frustration reading some stuff on here, or are an old poster churning into a new username for reasons unknown.
Anyway, this transfer thread has over a million views, many Clarets are using it to keep informed with what is going on, and my point isn’t to ban freedom of speech, that is fine, it is asking why people who get upset and fall out with other people end up quoting them and taking up page after page, instead of, as you rightly say, blocking or ignoring. That is making the transfer news or even on topic discussion hard to navigate. The recent page about Ekdal being slow is one example.
I’m not being hypocritical in writing this because your post was a sensible one about freedom of speech.

His loan was cut short at Augsburg with suggestions of a poor attitude.
Taken from link below.
----------------------------------
https://www.transfermarkt.ch/renato-vei ... d_id/14113
But according to BILD information, the planned demolition of the loan also has another reason!
Augsburg's number 8 is said to have repeatedly attracted negative attention with unpunctuality and a conversation with the coach did not bring any improvement. For Maassen, who attaches great importance to discipline and mutual respect within his team, this misconduct is another reason to no longer plan with Veiga.

One of the assumptions that is being made is that we need a LB. I am not a tactical genius but playing 3-4-3 (from my sensible soccer days) would seem to suit the transfer business we have done and are doing.

Brighton have switched their focus to Arsenal’s Albert Sambi Lokonga in their search to sign a midfielder, Sky Sports News understands.
The south coast club have been in talks with Lille to sign 19-year-old Carlos Baleba but it’s believed negotiations have become difficult to complete that deal.
Seagulls head coach Roberto De Zerbi is keen to sign a midfielder before the window closes following the departure of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea.
Burnley had been in discussions with Arsenal over a loan with an option to buy for Lokonga.
But, as it stands, there are no active talks with the Clarets over the signing of the Belgian.

Personally not bothered about it. With the wages footballers get paid if he won't come to us because of wages then we're better off without him. He prefers financial gain over getting his career back on track.

Does seem we’ve hit a wall right now with these current targets.
Hope we’ve got some alternatives up our sleeve. Past performance very much suggests we do, I just hope we can pin a few down in these last 10 days or so.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I'm with Firthy. If he is so deperate for cash now, I think it hints at a lack of confidence in his own ability. Failed at Arsenal and CP but not wanting regular football to turn it round.
Had he signed in pre-season, I'd have been pleased but I'm less excited by it as we have gone on. All things can change with time.

You would be really hard pressed to make the case that going to Brighton isn't a good move to get his career back on track.

But is it really 343 ?summitclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 9:42 amIf play 343 we would almost certainly go down. We'd concede far too many.
We have what two ‘wing backs’
It seems more latter half of last season’s city esque 3-2-4-1 or whatever
Three big lads at the back that are mobile and can play, two holding midfielders, two wingers hugging the touchline and two free roaming 8s with a striker up top.
Who honestly knows though, certainly don’t have many that could be considered a ‘fullback/wingback’ - Roberts, Vitinho and to a lesser extent Chaz and that’s about it?

I never said it wasn't but the Brighton offer wasn't on the table when he was negotiating with us.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 12:09 pmYou would be really hard pressed to make the case that going to Brighton isn't a good move to get his career back on track.
