ARTICLE: Clarets safe after beating Plymouth on the final day

Firstly, apologies for not continuing with the 1997/98 season throughout this season but the issues in the final quarter of last year meant it was left behind. But I thought it right to complete things with mention of the final game and maybe there will be a new feature next season with a new manager and then a new chairman.

What was this new feature with a new manager and chairman?
Then I realised it was Barry and Stan for 98-99 season and not 23-24 season

Hadn't written that so well had I? Yes, going to try and resurrect it into the 1998/99 season.

I remember this day so vividly. I'd had a season ticket with my Dad for a few years, but I remember this as the first game I'd been on that really really mattered.
For some reason I was absolutely convinced that Carlo Corazzin was going to equalise and send us down.

Mark Winstanley didn't block everything. Remember a cross coming in from the right hand side along the 6 yard box and he completely missed it as he swung his foot towards it. Heart stopping moment but somehow we muddled our way through.

I started watching burnley the season earlier when we had Heath as manager but only went on two games.
This season was when I went to plenty of matches. Couldn't go on this game as it was my cousins christening and I was made to go. Still remember everyone watching teletext and cheering

Tony I’m pretty sure Plymouth were above us at kick off and only needed a draw assuming Brentford lost because that season goals scored counted ahead of goal difference.

I know my memory isn't what it was, but didn't we absolutely batter them but couldn't score the goals that would have made it comfortable?

It doesn't bare thinking about what might have transpired if we'd lost that day.
Sure, we'd survive and we'd have eventually got promoted but we'd have none of the success we're currently enjoying.
And last Tuesday wouldn't have happened either.

I've still got Andy Cooke's t-shirt from that day. Not his match shirt, but the blue t-shirt he came out in after the initial celebrations.
He threw it into the crowd at the bottom of the Longside and I sprinted down the touchline and leapt over everybody to catch it. Still one of my proudest possessions.

Funny to look back to my thoughts at the time. I thought Waddle had turned a corner and would be ok as manager the next season. But I was glad it was Stan who took over. One of a string of great managers we have had since. To me only Laws and to a lesser extent Howe have disappointed since.

We hit the bar at least once (maybe twice), Payton had a half chance. But they had chances too.

Back in those days I used to watch every game home and away so, however infrequently, it must have had its moments but I have absolutely nothing but awful memories of this season and all capped off by being played in the worst Burnley home shirt there's ever been.

I liked Andy Cooke. Fell out regularly with a guy sat behind me about Cooke's general ability and what he brought to the team, so much so the guy offered me out and told my lass he'd 'sort her out too'.
Those were the days...

Queued for a ticket, paced around town on the day then went in early. Cant remember the match too well but the beehole went berserk when Cookies goal went in. First time I,d heard a nearly full Turf giving max vocal support, goosebumps. Did Waddle resign/leave later the same day?

Hazy memory of this match! Remember it was heaving in town before the match. The book ‘Playing at Home’ by John Aizlewood sums the day up very well from a neutrals perspective!

Strange day that one as i recall we were away for the weekend in Westport and i had to make do with Ceefax on the box .

It's difficult to find a manager who hasn't contributed positively to where we are now, in some way. Even Waddle signed Payton who fired us to promotion under Stan. Howe, whilst not spectacular, signed Trippier, Vokes, Ings, Shackell, etc.; all players who got us back up in 2014. Similarly, with Cotterill, nothing major was achieved in the league, but he gave us the players who Coyle then took to promotion.
And Laws gave us Dean Marney!

I've just checked back and you are correct. We had the better goal difference but this was a season when it was based on goals scored and they'd scored more than us. I've corrected the article.

A game and a weekend I'll never forget.
4 of us drove up from London, car broken into within 30 secs in Stockport and trying to find a place to stay after the game

Brilliant atmosphere in the ground and then in the pubs after! And the home stands were ram jam full for the first time since the ground developments a couple of years earlier. I'm thinking away fans pretty much had the run of the CFS at that time and although Plymouth had a very healthy following, obviously they didn't fill it and that's why the gate is 18,000+ when it could easily have been more. We dodged a bullet that day and when you look at some of the names in our team it's ridiculous that we were ever in that position!!

I drove up from my RAF base near Wolverhampton and had to drive back to Kent for a wedding straight after the game. Got some grief for being very late! Was worth it though. Great day.

When I watch the current heroes video before a match I always think of Andy Cooke's goals helping us to say up that season and especially the two in the last game.
Thanks for doing these recaps. This was the first season I was addicted to Burnley as a 10 year old (it took two seasons to attach itself to my brain). If you do carry on into next season I will be reading!
What was the deal with Gerry Creaney that season? My recollection is he came on loan and scored a hatfull but we couldn't afford to sign him but I'm not sure if I remember correctly.

Scored something like 8 in 11 games, but Payts replaced him eventually.

I was on holiday in Orlando with Mrs Clarets4me and our son and rang my Dad up to check the score on Ceefax, in those pre-internet and mobile phone days ...

He came on loan and scored goals much to the embarrassment of Manchester City. This forced City boss Joe Royle to recall him but then they didn’t play him. He scored 8 in 10 league appearances for us.

Fun fact - the 2 lads who led the on pitch charge at the Plymouth fans were actually undercover police officers who’d been embedded on stoops for a year encouraging and to certain extent organising a mini crime wave in Burnley. Crown Court judges weren’t very happy with them.

I can recall being VERY rough for this game after being in Lancaster the night before for a mates 21st,
I was sitting in the JML with my head in my hands with a mix of nerves, tiredness and hangover

I drove up from West London on the Saturday morning for this game. Passed a few Clarets on the way and also the Plymouth coaches on the M5 just south of Birmingham. Burnley scarf was flying out of the sun roof and of course i passed the coaches very slowly to give them the full view of the colours. They looked pleased to see me, some banging on the windows to wave at me (they correctly predicted the score too, 2 fingers on one hand and 1 finger on the other) some were even impersonating Gareth Hunt on the Nescafe adverts
