Good question, with the fan base and stadium size, although somewhat dilapidated now they should be a lot higher, I cannot think of one in the lower reaches for as long, possibly Forest, maybe Derby now .

Are we a bigger club?
If so, then we must be a good shout between late 70s and mid 90s.

Burnley were in the lower leagues for quite a while
Edit: beat me to it, Nil.

And we weren’t the ‘96 points in the third tier’ type of shite they seem to be being accused of this season.

The potential of SWFC is possibly greater than ours so that has to come into the equation, that said I actually didn't think about us.

To be fair, the only luck they had tonight was bad. It was almost written in the stars. It's hard to beat fate.

Didn't realise they had Norris in goal, another loan player doing well, even if no clarets future

Sheff Wed really should have got automatic promotion and not only were they odds on just 4 or 5 games away from the end of the season, but they looked likely to be champions. They ultimately blew it and ended up being miles the best team in the play offs judging by points gained, league position and form over the whole season and we all know how that usually works..... absolute kiss of death!!

We certainly have been there, worse as we all know.
No denying Wednesday are a club with massive potential. As always it’s the fans to feel sorry for.
Whether I would laugh at their plight, certainly not, it could be us and still could be of our stars don’t align.
As always with football we enjoy the highs and hope the lows aren’t too low.

Sheffield Wednesday went into the game having won 5 out of 6 matches recently. Hardly on a bad run of form.
They had a dip in form 2/3rds of the way through the season that cost them automatic promotion. Mind you Ipswich and Plymouth were exceptional.

The fact that people are doubting whether Wednesday is a bigger club shows their demise. A true city club, huge (now dilapidated) ground, huge following proud history. But the Premier League is redefining “big”. Are Brentford now a bigger club than Portsmouth? Historically not even close but One is growing rapidly and the other is shrinking. Closer to home we are slowly eclipsing the other Lancashire teams. And long may that continue.

A few seasons ago a large group of their 'fans' (knuckle dragging types) abused just about everyone in the Swan in Burnley town centre including an elderly chap who was having a quiet pint.
Now, I know you shouldn't generalise and all clubs have their fair share of whoppers but that incident sticks in my mind.
So on that basis, they can suffer for a few more years yet as far as I'm concerned. All the more painful for them what with United getting promoted.

Wolves were rubbish and in div 4 for a bit until bull and mutch got them out of it.
I might be recollecting this wrong, but is this their second long period of rubbishness? They were in the bottom tier with Sheffield United in the late 1980's, but think they've resurfaced in the Premier league for a bit before sinking again. The first slump must have been worse than this one, but it now seems to merge into one.

I think Norris will have a lot more to do in the replay. Wednesday at home will be an interesting game. What’s the odds of them overturning the first leg result?

Wolves are a good call, yeah they went even further down although they did have a fantastic time bouncing back again with Bull.

Anyone remember the numpty running on the pitch at Wednesday after we scored a penalty and Stan ran on to deal with him? When was that 2000? Was it Cook with the pen?

Nor the 25,000 plus crowds
About 4,500 on the first attendance I can remember
Certainly a much bigger club than us back in the day, and almost certainly are now

Beat us 7-2 at home on last day of season, 2003. They were already relegated. I'm sure Nik the Greek feigned injury to be subbed by Beresford to avoid further humiliation. Those were the days.

I agree, IPA.
The only time I have ever had my scarf pinched was at Nottingham Forest, in November 1969, and I've never liked Forest, or their fans, since.

Got a feeling it was 2001. Think it was the ITV digital era so was a stupid Sunday evening kickoff time. Or maybe 2002.

Opening day of 2001/02 when we ended up top for a while. Think Cook missed the pen, but it was re-taken and he scored.

Watched it leat night and felt at halftime Peterborough would have more . Sheff Wed had to attack and if they didn’t get the next goal it was game over. However I don’t think the tie is over. Sheff Wed more than capable of winning each half 2 nil also. Will be a good game I think.

Of the 3 teams left I think they are the most likely to finish above Rovers next season so I hope not.
I would have seen Peterborough as relegation fodder, and Bolton and Barnsley little better.
Hopefully an Owls promotion frees up one more relegation spot.

Your memory is v good.
Just checked it to confirm.
Our cause wasn't helped by a stupid red card for Ian Moore early on and an own goal by Gnohere.
It's not mentioned in the report but i seem to recall that Beresford was as hapless as Michopoulos that day.
I also note that an Ashley Westwood scored for the Owls that day, but it couldn't have been "ours" as he would have only been 13.

I remember it particularly well as an elderly lady sat next to us was apoplectic with rage after the final whistle as some fans ran onto the pitch.
"You're ruining it for us" she was shouting. I'm still struggling to understand what exactly was being ruined after that ending to a rather turbulent season.
