One of the greatest groups ever.IMHO..

The Kinks are simply outstanding and really ought to be far more venerated than they are.
They basically invented modern guitar based rock/pop.

Some of their songs are classics. When people ask me: The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, I answer The Kinks.

Saw them live as long ago as 1980 in London and watched a musical in theatre about the Kinks around 5 years ago which was brilliant (but forget the name of it). The fact their music is still played today, and used on some high profile commercials says a lot about them. Some of their tracks are timeless

I can honestly say I was never into the Kinks,where they before my time me only being 67
Lola was OK though...a song 60 years ahead of its time.

The musical is called Sunny Afternoon. Superb production and a great band.

When I first started work as a young Punk an older work colleague and I used to lend each other records and two of the many he lent me were Something Else and Muswell Hillbillies of which became mainstays in my collection

They had their own unique sound and inspired a lot of emerging bands in the 80s.
Played Nelson Imp in the Sixties too.

Sure they did a Thursday night at the cats tash very early in their career. Lots of great groups there in the sixties. Fish and chips on the walk home ( twice if we were hungry)

The very first single I owned was “You Really Got Me” bought for me by my grandma from Pollards music shop for 3s/4d (may have been 4s/3d) in 1964. I was 10 years old. It got played over and over until it was almost worn out.

Saw them at Nelson Imp in the 60’s. I’m sure that Dave Davies gets his fingers stuck between the strings and the frets in the recording of “You Really Got Me”. His riff is entirely off the cuff and not as intended imo

Many of their songs have aged very well. The just mentioned Waterloo Sunset, Lazy Sunday Afternoon and Lola all being just as good to listen to today as they were originally. Some very inventive catchy lyrics and riffs in these songs and many others.

Very fractious relationship between Ray and Dave Davies, just one more thing that was done better than the Gallaghers. Death of a Clown was much under rated IMO

Pete Townsend, who penned the occasional half-useful ditties, described WS as "divine" and a "masterpiece".
It's a very sad song I feel.
