Re: ARTICLE: World Cup Billy
I remember being allowed to go to my first game with mates rather than my dad. Think it was around 1982 against Newport County, must have been one of the first home games. We were walking down Harry Potts Way past the club to get in the long side and Billy Hamilton came out of a door and asked if I wanted a ticket. It sounds bizarre now thinking about it. Me and the lad I was with were starstruck. Couldn’t believe it. Got his autograph too.

Re: ARTICLE: World Cup Billy
What an excellent article.
Being from NornIron, I’ve always had a special regard for players from that country (especially Willie Irvine).
Billy was one of my favourite Clarets, and that World Cup game against Spain was truly special.

First time I ever remember being upset when a player left, was hearing about Billy going to Oxford... absolutely gutted I was.
Billy Hamilton was awesome.

As well as a great player for us he was & still is a great man
Re: ARTICLE: World Cup Billy
There's not many Burnley players get a kit named after them. The yellow away from the POCO season with the claret and blue bands across the upper chest is unofficially known as 'The Billy Hamilton shirt'. The photo of his celebration after scoring at Tottenham, with the socks rolled down, is one of my favourite iconic Burnley images.

Re: ARTICLE: World Cup Billy
Brilliant article about one of my favourite players. The hattrick against Altrincham came in a 6-1 win, I thought ?

When we won Division 3, I really did think the good times were coming back.
Just add 2 or 3 decent players to Brian Miller's champions and we'd be contenders I thought at the time.

I remember going to an open day at the Turf shortly before the start of the 82/83 season, think it was something to do with the centenary. Billy was there and ruffled my hair, I didn’t wash it for weeks!

We'd lost Overson too.
A lot was said if we'd got Flynn and Donachie earlier, but we needed a centre half

Hamilton was a brill, somebody from the higher leagues should have taken the punt after 82.

Re: ARTICLE: World Cup Billy
Billy is my all time favourite player. We used to celebrate our goals in the park, like he did in the world cup. Once got him to sign a pound note for me before a game, said i was gonna keep it forever, but spent it on cider the same day!

Re: ARTICLE: World Cup Billy
Desperately needed a centre half. We played with Dobbo & Micky Phelan there for much of the season. We’d have been ok with a fit Vince.Wokingclaret wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 10:31 pmYep, summer signings 0, imagine that today

We drew the first game 0-0 and then won both of the next two 4-1. After that, we lost 14 of the next 18.

My old foreman at Michelin sent big Billy off when he did a bit of reffing in Ballymena before he was a pro think he said he was a dirty bugger.
