Re: Currency
We opened a starling account last year before going away. They have no fees when paying abroad or withdrawing cash, we took some back up cash but just got that from tescos.

Re: Currency
Martin Lewis site has a good comparison tool if you're after some cash before you leave:
https://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/
That said, if you're only taking a couple of hundred for the first day or so, it's hardly worth the faff of saving a couple of quid for the difference between 1,13€ and 1,14€

Re: Currency
Use a cashpoint on arrival? I think you get a better deal than a currency exchange? As others have stated, Revolut, Monzo etc all make it much easier if you get yourself organised in time. I just transfer from £ to Euros through the card and spend on it like I would here.

Re: Currency
I recently opened an account with Chase specifically to use it abroad for a recent holiday to Italy. I transfered cash from my current account to it. You get the best exchange rate for using it abroad for purchases and fee free cash withdrawals (although some banks/ATMs can charge a transaction fee). You can also get 1% cashback with all purchases made with the card.

Re: Currency
Get yourself a Revolut and suffer 0 échange rate fees - can even upgrade to a premium membership and get travel insurance, free airport lounge (dependent on membership tier) and many other perks!
You add money in GBP and can convert to any currency that you like on the app, or simply tap / draw out with your card and it will automatically do it for you -
Saved me a ton on my travels

Re: Currency
There's a balance to be had and the whole package has to be accounted for to work out the best deal, so while there may be no fees with this variety of cards/accounts, what is the rate of exchange you're getting?

A lot depends on your membership tier

All you need is Revolut…
Re: Currency
To be fair, if it's a bit of spending money for your jollies, then I can't see it making that much difference.
Different game if you're making a big expenditure like a property for example.

I've been to Austria and Romania recently and I didn't use cash at any point.
I was only there for a few days on business though.

Re: Currency
Quite the opposite in Germany (depending where you are of course). Many places are cash only, and if they do take cards, it's only EC/Giro card so no Visa/MasterCard. Almost been caught out a couple of times with that.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Tue Jun 13, 2023 7:32 amI've been to Austria and Romania recently and I didn't use cash at any point.

Re: Currency
Revolut is the one. I’m away 4-5 times a year and use it everywhere, decent rates and then straight on to a virtual card in your Apple Pay. Really easy.
Second the point above unless you’re wanting 500+ in cash it’s not worth faffing around over a few quid.
