Can't be 50 seasons ago surely.....Where has that gone ?
Anyway, that sublime left-footed goal from Doug Collins is forever etched in the memory.

On that Sheffield game with my dad.
We'd no idea what a season we were going to have.
Great start though!

It is 50 years I’m afraid. I covered the 1972/73 season two years early to fill in during the pandemic but will now cover the next three years from the start of the 73/74 season.

We pretty much took over Bramall Lane that day......Dobo scored a superb goal, but Doug's was something else.

Dobo's goal just before half time was the outstanding moment of the game, hitting a 23 yard shot on the run into the far corner. Doug's free kick on the edge of the box earlier took a big deflection off the wall and completely wrong-footed the keeper. We were indebted to Alan Stevenson in the 2nd half for making some brilliant saves.

I still say the 1972-73 season was the best in the time I’ve been watching Burnley. However what the 1973-74 season had in store will forever be etched in my memory. Some marvellous matches. The 2-1 Boxing Day win over Liverpool was my favourite at the Turf.

Re The Sheffield United game has anyone got a link to the goals on YouTube or something. I’ve seen them in the past - Burnley played in the dark blue shirts light blue shorts I think?

Played in white shorts and claret socks with the new away shirt but I think it was the only time we did.

Think I can safely say I expected us to win. We'd had such a great 72/73 that I believed it would continue. Some great results after this had me even more convinced that we were a force to reckon with. Taken aback more than a bit when we ran out in a kit totally alien to anything we'd worn away before. Great days.

I was at this game. The blue away shirt with claret trim looked good. We played really well in this game and I was excited for the season ahead. Only downer was I copped a punch on the nose exiting the away end.

Was this the match where Tony Currie ‘did’ Mick Docherty ?

I was another one who was there. We played some beautiful football that day.

Excellent, noisy following in one end. Hardly taking Bramall Lane over.

I thought Dobson's goal was a freekick. Are you sure?

Later start to the season then. Will be late August when we get underway. UTC will be reporting from Bramall Lane on the 50th anniversary of the game.

Absolutely positive. Collins' goal was the free kick.

Thanks. I was there, but it is 50 years ago. The memory plays tricks.

Both goals at the away end definetly.

I was unfortunate to be in the away end that day and, seriously, we outnumbered them five to one at least.
One of the best away days ever, particularly for Doug's special goal.

There were no away ends then, you could go in any part of the ground.

Didn't Mick Doc go off hurt to be replaced by Peter Noble?

Slight deflection of the wall maybe, but the precision of the free-kick was something to behold.
Doug had that in his locker and Lionel Messi would have been rightly proud.
A smug journey home to Lancashire that Saturday, for sure.

Yes, I know. Was just describing it from any perspective a fan would have of Brammal Lane today. We, for example, were towards their Kop on the same side the players came out from.

It was indeed the game when Tony Currie "did" Mick Docherty.
Standing behind the dugouts I remember hearing the warming up substitute, Peter Noble, being asked by someone from the Burnley bench whether he had ever played full back.
The reply must have been positive as Noble, signed as a forward, slotted in at right back and remained there I think for the rest of the season.

We may have outnumbered them in the away end. You'd expect that. We had a much bigger following in the FA Cup in the early '90s when Adrian Heath scored a couple in a 2-2 draw. 8,000 there that day.

And for those who remember there were only 3 sides with stands. The cricket pitch was still there.

I knew the last match had been played by then but only just. They built the fourth side over the cricket square. I’m not sure whether it was in use for the 1974/75 season but definitely was in 1975/76.

Their new stand was a bigger version of the Bob Lord stand except it was cantilever. The memory sure does play tricks though, I was certain it was there for this game.

It's the finer detail of a matchday you tend to forget.....the collective intake of breath as we emerged from the tunnel before kick-off was something special that day......Darkish blue shirts with Claret trimmings, White shorts and Claret socks......We really looked the business and went on to play like it.......
......Whatever happened to that away strip ?

I'd forgotten that kit. I was there but still can't recall it.
