Man City - today’s dilemma (Proposed Charity Shield Boycott)

Man City supporters' group @WeAre1894 are asking fans to boycott August's Community Shield final vs Arsenal due to scheduling concerns. They are suggesting that fans donate their money to @MCFCfoodbank, or to another local charity instead.
BUT….
Many fans are arguing that if the Premier League didn’t have the overseas investors that it has, then scheduling would likely not be an issue….that it’s an issue that has been brought on by themselves over the last decade, as one of the wealthiest clubs in the world.
Other fans have said things such as “ I lack sympathy because when the Super League was proposed, the @FA & all the governing bodies puffed their chest and said ‘football is for the fans’ & you all backed them. This is the outcome. Should’ve let them squirm until real change was made — reap what you sow..”
Then there’s also the argument of the fact that Manchester City, as things currently stand, have 115 charges against them… so would it be in their best interests to keep quiet and continue.
Where do you stand on this?

To look at everything that's happened at Man City since 2008 and decide the biggest problem to address is the FA scheduling a game at half past 5 is so utterly disingenuous that you have to imagine they're upset about something else. And it's on telly anyway.

Kick off time hasn't been confirmed has it?
Anyway, I've no sympathy for them, this is what they wanted, to be successful and all the stuff that goes with it.

My guess this is a smoke screen for the 15000 empty seats in the City end for the match.

Similar sometimes to the fans of the "big clubs" chanting "Sky TV is f***ing ****".
They do realise it is their clubs who drove this TV scheduling issue and also without Sky and their money they wouldn't be able to afford the best players.

Still no sympathy for them.
This is the consequence of regularly winning the domestic trophies
If they don't like it then tough

You won't do, you don't follow your team up and down the country getting shat on by train companies and kick off times.
Northern teams keep getting shat on going down to Wembley and kick off times. I hope it takes off and more clubs boycott it. But as this thread already proves, fans won't stick together.

So, because they’re winning things, they have to accept the silly kick off times?
Of course they want to win things, we’d be the same if the boot was on our foot (with zero input of any weight with what happens in respect of who owns the club, how they run it, control the finances or where the money comes from).
Fans shouldn’t lose their right to voice their frustration at things just because their team is successful.

I drive when I go to watch Burnley, because I don't like the trains, they're not reliable at the best of times

They're not obliged to attend what's basically a glorified friendly
I understand the issues of semifinals at Wembley instead of OT or Villa Park, but for a glorified friendly it's hardly end of the world stuff.

I’m not sure that for most it works like that. As a fan you want to go to these games - I’m sure most of us would if we ever got the opportunity (appreciating some interest may wain if your club was a regular at the charity shield).

Not sure what the issue is. Get the train back to Manchester, you'll be in bed before midnight.

A few years ago Citeh fans would have given their right arm to see their team play at Wembley. Now on the back of an Arab Nation financing and some success all of a sudden they start bleating about scheduling and travelling.
Wembley is where it has always been. show piece games have largely always been staged at Wembley nothing has changed only the Club the current entitled bunch of fans have attached to.
Too far, too expensive, difficult to get to? Don't go then it'll be on the Tele.

I think their protest is a valid one. Disappointing to see some of the responses on here.
To have them playing at Wembley with a 5:30 kick off is downright ridiculous.

We had to play Norwich at 12:30? QPR at 13:00 with Sunday train times?

Forget that it is Man City for a minute.
Any non London team having to play at Wembley at 5.30pm on a Sunday is ridiculous.
If it was Burnley who were in this position would our fans seriously be making comments like watch it on the TV ?
Just further proof that Sky and the powers that be in the game care less and less about supporters. Those with corporate tickets won’t give a jot either - they’ll no doubt have their transport home or hotels sorted on a freebie or at a cost which they are happy to pay.
And one final point is that surely the fact this game is effectively a friendly is going to limit viewing figures and therefore advertising revenues etc whatever time of day it is put on so why put the game on at a ridiculously inconvenient time for ordinary working fans.

Easy to say for someone who never even watches his own team even if they are playing at 3pm on a Saturday just down the road.

Just translates as if we've won everything that we could be bothered with (trophies of significance) but this 1 (no relevant importance) we'll give it a miss all the same.

They'll probably play a mix of first teamers/reserves but as the game is on the Sunday they then play us on the Friday, so one less day recovery than if the game was played the Saturday.

I don't live down the road & I have my reasons, I shouldn't need to go off topic to explain anything, back on topic it's up to man city to fulfill their scheduling obligations & it's not down to everybody else to pander about after them.

The Charity Shield only moved to Wembley the season after we beat City 1-0 at Maine Road to win it. I think it was City and us (2nd Division Champions) because the League and Cup winners didn't want to play for the Shield, if I remember correctly

No you won’t. Not a cat in hells chance. You ever tried to get back to Euston from Wembley, say walking out of the stadium at nearly 8 o’ clock? Give your head a wobble mate.

I think that's right and I'm sure there were other times when it was played elsewhere - Millennium Stadium for instance - but for the most part it's a Wembley event.

The problem is that to everyone in the world outside of most of England, England means London. Manchester means north of London. What’s the problem. Cost will not even enter their heads, as it is not significant amounts of money inside their bubble.
As in all aspects of British life few look down the ladder with much concern; they are too busy looking for opportunities to climb the greasy poll, while being ready to jump on any passing gravy train.
They don’t care who cannot go, it will be full… that is all the world sees.

I believe that the 1975 Charity Shield game was the 1st one played at Wembley. Prior to that the game was played at the home of the League Champions with the F.A. Cup winners as visitors, except in those seasons where a team had done the double, of course.

This really is good news - finally, those in charge of these things have actually listened! (Doubt it will continue if I'm honest but tiny steps and all that!)
Very disappointing to read some of the comments on this thread - I understand rivalry / jealousy about City (and God knows they have a lot to answer for) - but this is about something bigger - about how fans of all clubs are treated (often) with contempt!

Have you tried getting a train with Avanti recently? And will be a reduced service on a Sunday night.
Sad to see how many people are happy for fellow football fans to be completely shafted by the powers that be.

Good for them that they've won. I hope this taste of fan power will lead them to look at what else they could influence, like sportswashing, blatant financial cheating, accusations of doping breaches and so on. I won't hold my breath.

I share your disappointment. I know how hard some of these supporters groups work for the benefit of supporters and not just at the big clubs. Clubs and authorities too often don’t want to listen, they have to be forced to at times.
