Friendlies

I haven't seen anything so far regarding pre-season friendlies and there is 'nowt' on the club site yet. Hopefully news soon as these games may be rare opportunities for some fans to see the boys for a while (given the ST sales and new membership schemes). Any rumours up there in Lancashire?

Belgian press today reporting we will be playing against Genk.
Not sure whether it’s home or away as the article is behind a paywall.

Thanks! Games against one or two Belgian teams certainly seem probable.

That’s a likely one but don’t know whether it will be behind closed doors or not

As far as pronunciation goes, is it Genk or Henk as some European countries pronounce a G as we pronounce a H. Asking for a friend.

I’m guessing it’s more of a “ch” sound like a Scots person would pronounce the “ch” in loch.

I think its bordering on ridiculous now that any pre-season friendlies haven't been announced. Especially if they are abroad.

If we were to be playing a game outside of the country then you would guess the latest it could be would be a week before the season kicks off, so potentially 5th August. That's only six weeks away this weekend.

TBH they aren't for us. Fans can even be seen as an inconvenience when it comes to pre-season

Even if so and they just want to play them behind closed doors, why can't they just detail that. "Burnley FC will play 4 friendlies all behind closed doors" instead of the radio silence we get. I can only hope the media team are busy knocking up a fair few announcement videos instead.

It's understandable to want to play behind closed doors at times but we have signed up to the Premier Zone brand and should continue to capitalise on that. For the club to be silent on such matters is not good form. A lot of Clarets would enjoy a short European trip or even match the halcyon days of Devon, Gloucester etc. They are good PR exercises if handled right with appropriate opponents.

Didn’t the Huddersfield manager say that they didn’t know what to expect from us on the first game of last season as we didn’t play any public friendlies?
Might not be a bad thing considering our opening day opponents this time round

Given how we came out first game of last season, I’m more than happy to go with however Vinny wants to approach pre-season.

He did, we’d only played the one at Shrewsbury. But there is no lack of expectation now after a year of us playing under Kompany.

Point taken Wilks but I don't think we will be reverting to a Sean D style anytime soon. Early friendlies are played at walking pace with full squad changes throughout. Not much Pep could glean out of that! Unless of course Muric plays up top

Whilst I appreciate that being the case last season I can hardly imagine the Manchester City staff are currently sat scratching their heads over Burnley.

Blimey Barcelona! That could be very confusing! We will have to remind them in true Dave Thomas fashion! "It's Burnley, not Barcelona!"

Don't know about games at Turf. Don't normally pass on friend of someone in know but games away in Belgium, Spain and Germany. Not naming teams for fear of flight prices rising

If correct the middle one is a change of club and venue - which is entirely possible - and the last one a change of venue which again is entirely possible and given our previous experience with a team from that nation might be understandable

Could it be the Algarve Football Cup?
Fulham played in it last year against Benfica and Nice.

What is the issue with the club on all this? If they don't want any supporters there announce behind closed doors. Communication let us down on all this. Truely farcical. Not even the people usually in the know like CT have a clue.

If they don’t want supporters there .. then why announce it until it’s kicked-off ? I remember being at a friendly years ago when we had a poor side and the staff were gutted at how many were there from Burnley because of the amount of abuse they’d had on tour (Worcester and Gloucester) the season before.

One of the teams i was given was Wolfsburg. It appears they have a festival of football 5th August including a friendly game. By no means a certainty but a possibility.

If they think there's an advantage to playing friendlies without fans I think that's fine (a little bit of a shame, but worth it), but it does absolutely no harm to communicate.

True enough .. but as far as I know nothing is set in stone as yet. Venues and whether or not fans are going to be allowed in and so on all still to be decided . A couple of years ago two possible opponents appeared on the staff itinerary for a home friendly .. we played a different club altogether in the end .
Clubs have different ideas about what they want from these games and who they are willing to play
