Moments that could have changed BFC forever
Re: Moments that could have changed BFC forever
Lincoln City were the visitors on the day of the Bradford fire. Their form went to pieces after partly because of the impact of the events of that day and partly because of the financial implications as they had to close both of their own wooden stands. It could be argued that if the Bradford fire hadn't happened then they wouldn't have finished below us and been relegated to non-league the day of the Orient game.

I always wondered what would've happened if Colin Waldron had managed to deck Malcolm Macdonald in the SF at Hillsborough. Things could've been so different.

That Matt Taylor penalty v Leicester that hit the post and Leicester then scored on the counter attack. Had that penalty gone in we would have probably stayed up instead of Leicester!

I think that's more of a sliding doors moment for Leicester than us, had they gone down they'd have never won the Prem

John Morrissey of Everton launched himself into Willie Irvine and broke his leg. Willie was never the same player after his recovery.

The Sherpa Van Trophy Final run. It gave us belief back after such a dark time.

Out of that cup run, to pick a moment, I'd go for Paddy Roche's penalty miss in the shoot out.claretabroad wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 4:03 pmThe Sherpa Van Trophy Final run. It gave us belief back after such a dark time.

Just to mention that whilst that might be the case, it had no impact on our destiny, since we finished above both Lincoln and Torquay.dibraidio wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 1:47 pmLincoln City were the visitors on the day of the Bradford fire. God knows where we've had ended up had we lost that.lakedistrictclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 9:26 amThe 2009 play-off final.
If we'd lost that, we may never have reached the PL, and could conceivably have started a downward spiral.
Down amongst the Oldhams and Rochdales, possibly.
But hopefully not Bury.

But we did compete with the big clubs for a time, no worse or better then previous years. I think it was more 'home side keep all the gate takings' decision, sometime late sixties, that really did it. And then of course The Premier League means actually winning the thing is completely beyond us.SlidingTackle wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 1:26 pmhttps://www.efl.com/news/2016/january/f ... gue-clubs/
This. As a result it was no longer a level playing field in terms of finding and attracting players, and we could no longer compete with the 'big' clubs.

The police dog that bit a player on the final day in 1987 - in the extra time added, a goal was scored which sent Lincoln down instead of us……

Torquay equalised in injury time or they’d have been relegated not usJimmymaccer wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 6:33 pmThe police dog that bit a player on the final day in 1987 - in the extra time added, a goal was scored which sent Lincoln down instead of us……
